Irises were named after the goddess of the rainbow, reflecting the array of vibrant colours these gorgeous flowers comes in. Species such as sweet, German and Florentine iris are the ones used to obtain a white, waxy solid or orris "butter" aromatic, via steam distillation of the powdered roots. The roots have to be processed, dried and stored for 3 years for their woody, violet-like scent to develop, which is why orris is one of the most expensive botanical raw materials available.
