Blood pressure forces the fluid in the blood to be filtered across the capillaries of the glomerulus. The Process of Filtration The formation of urine begins with the process of filtration. The Bowman's capsule is the filtration unit of the glomerulus. Blood enters the glomerulus through the afferent arteriole and leaves through the efferent arteriole. The pressure of the blood inside the glomerulus is increased because the afferent arteriole has a larger diameter than the efferent…

Glomerular filtration: shown is the bowmans capsule (yellow) and the glomerulus (red). This structure serves as a filtration mechanism before reaching the proximal convoluted tubule of the nephron. In order to pass, fluids must go through 3 layers: the fenestrated endothelium, the basement membrane, and filtration slits. Based upon size, molecules greater than 8nm are too large to pass. Therefore only molecules such as glucose, water, electrolytes, amino acids, nitrogenous waste can pass. Juxtaglomerular apparatus is located at the vascular pole of each glomerulus where the afferent and efferent arterioles come in close contact with the initial part of the distal convoluted tubule. It is made up of tubular and vascular elements of the nephron which interact to control the systemic blood pressure and the rate of glomerular filtration (and hence the rate of urine formation).
