JLE editors touch upon the trends and challenges arising out of the changing landscape of scholar... more JLE editors touch upon the trends and challenges arising out of the changing landscape of scholarly communication as well as two sets of major problems non-Anglophone researchers face in publishing their research in international English-language journals. Firstly, if not desk rejected, they encounter continuous revisions of their submissions to such journals. Secondly, English as lingua franca of international scholarly communication may lead to some disengagement of national scholarly elites who essentially publish in English and to a wider national scientific community decoupled from English and limited to their native language communication. Given the challenges, the editorial offers a refined and widened JLE scope regarding language- and education-related issues of scholarly written communication.

Business communication in English is getting more highlighted in the globalized context, as the E... more Business communication in English is getting more highlighted in the globalized context, as the English language spreads as the most dominant lingua franca in international business settings. While the volume of studies focused on business communication in various disciplines continues to increase, new strands of research emerge; some approaches are going out of focus. To improve our understanding and offer a more realistic picture of the field of business communication in English, we examined promising trends in the area. The study primarily selected 254 publications pertaining to Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences, which were extracted from the Scopus database for the period from 2012 to 2016. All sources relevant to technical communication as well as narrowly concentrated studies in management and marketing were excluded as irrelevant. Using search strategies, sampling, content analysis, comparison analysis, categorization, the present paper revealed the basic trends in the field. 254 papers were filtered for the purpose of detecting their links to business communication in English by identifying the relevance of the keywords of the papers and then comparing the selections made by both authors. All the 144 publications ultimately sorted out in our study were then amalgamated into a bigger direction of research. According to the findings of the present research the most widely explored themes relevant to business communication in English cover discourse studies and issues of pragmatics and effective business communication; research of business communication skills and competencies including their classifications, practice-related and teaching aspects; didactic studies for teaching business communication at tertiary level; publications on intercultural and cross-cultural business communication, on English as a lingua franca in business-related contexts. The research maintains that the emphasis in the field is shifting from the business language towards studying discourse and context as well as communication skills and competencies.

Nearly ten years ago, scholarly publishing came to the fore in research on scientific communicati... more Nearly ten years ago, scholarly publishing came to the fore in research on scientific communication spurred by the evolving Open Science system, the reinvention of peer reviews, and new attitudes to scholarly publications in the ranking-based academic environment. Here, the JLE editors revisit the field of scholarly publishing and identify the most popular areas where potential JLE authors might have difficulty. In this editorial, Scopus-indexed reviews are analysed to map the prevailing trends. The editorial review shows that the trends include open access, peer review transparency, the changing role of libraries in scholarly publishing, CrossRef’s initiatives, outsourcing and skills lacking in publishing, the impact of universities’ prescribed lists for publishing research, open-access monographs, and the role of commercial publishers.

Non-Anglophone writers with little academic English skills or a weak command of English tend to face desk-rejections or very difficult and time-consuming rounds of edits and revisions. Second-language researchers often are biased toward national schools of thought with the most prominent international research ignored. Such authors are unaware of the recent developments in their field on a global scale and are sometimes prone to misunderstanding scientific and academic genres in the internationally accepted mode. Non-Anglophone writers are also inclined toward native-language patterns of thought and, consequently, rhetorical schemas different from English. The editorial dwells upon the challenges L2 scientific authors have to rise to. ‘Publish or peris... more The editorial dwells upon the challenges L2 scientific authors have to rise to. ‘Publish or perish’ policy pursued globally leads to an increased international market of predatory journals in response to persisting university requirements to academics’ publications in international journals. The quality issues of scholarly publications are coming to the fore, with re-focusing on skills and competencies necessary to produce research acceptable to high-tier and well-established journals. Non-Anglophone L2 writers face more barriers to English-language international periodicals than native speakers of English, as they tend to follow distinct cultural patterns of thought. Consequently, rhetorical moves and steps of scholarly texts may substantially differ from those written by Anglophone researchers. The scholarly community has to handle a growing set of problems related to L2 scholarly writing in English to ensure their successful submissions to well-established international journals.

The top 100 quoted articles were singled out from Scopus database, filtered through subject areas (social sciences; arts and humanities), language (English), years (2015-2019), document type (article) and keywords (discourse; discourse analysis; critical discourse analysis; semantics). Objective processes occurring at the Russian Higher school, Russia's participation in the Bologna... more Objective processes occurring at the Russian Higher school, Russia's participation in the Bologna process, transition of Russian universities to a level system of training, development and approval of professional standards for activity areas by joint efforts of representatives of universities and employers' associations, reduction in the number of universities and their branches in the country, the need to include the Russian universities into reputational ratings create serious prerequisites for understanding the need to involve participants of the educational process in the development of the university environment.
The purpose of the article is to analyze the practices of including participants of the educational process in the development of the socio-cultural environment of the university. The research methodology is based on the potentials of the system approach. To summarize the Russian experience, the practices of higher education institutions were studied. Сollected information, analysis of normative legal documents and practices of educational and scientific activities of the university were processed. Students, academic, administrative and management staff of 19 universities of the Russian Federation were interviewed. At the first stage, respondents were asked to assess the degree of their participation in the management run of the university in terms of the organizing and conducting possibilities for independent scientific research. At the second stage, there were the obtained results on the degree of involvement of public associations and student self-government bodies in the management process of the university, and at the third stage the educational environment of the university and the opportunities provided by the universities to improve its effectiveness were assessed.
According to the achieved results, most respondents believe that universities are capable to conduct independent scientific research. The degree of university involvement in public administration by public associations is very heterogeneous: there are universities with the very high degree of authority and participation of such associations, but the majority quite formally estimate such participation, as well as it is difficult to answer the question about the degree of such participation. The development of the educational environment at the university in the respondents’ opinion resulted in a rich corporate culture of the Russian universities which combines unique traditions. Respondents want their opinion to be taken into account on important issues related to the organization of the educational process, cultural and recreational activities, socially significant events. As an analytical result of the national experience of the inclusion practices of participants of the educational process into the development of the socio-cultural environment of the university, the recommendations have been drawn up that include tools to support the educational component of the educational process, as well as the development of student self-management, the participation of students in the activities of public associations and various art and sports clubs. Нigher education institutions strategy aimed at development of the socio-cultural environment of the university can ensure the effectiveness of professional education directions, the optimal trajectory of student development, and thereby contribute to improving the quality of vocational training.

Self-identification of young people essentially determines their life priorities, frequently prev... more Self-identification of young people essentially determines their life priorities, frequently preventing their harmonious socialization in the development of their life competencies. Hence, timely diagnosing attitudes may help to identify key problem fields in the perception of the personality, but also to create basis for the alignment of optimum ways of its full integration into society. In this regard the inherent extensive potential lies in the methods of linguistic diagnosing that are not perceived by young people as intervention. Based on the proposition that any self-identification of the individual and the specific community is accompanied by the opposition " own " vs " alien " , the verbalization of this opposition may demonstrate the scale of aggression toward " alien " , thereby fixing the level of tolerance in society and providing an extensive material for analyzing the fundamental outlook orientations of examinees. The authors conducted a study with 453 student participants from the three leading universities of Russia (MGIMO, RUDN University, National Research University Higher School of Economics). All participants were offered to fill up the questionnaires containing open-ended questions aimed at identifying the basic foundations of self-identification of the personality and key concepts of their reflecting. The obtained material was subjected to linguistic analysis on the basis of content analysis methods, analysis and construction of the structure of concepts with hierarchization of components. The fundamental thought was not the exarticulation of the semantic plan of concepts, but the construction of an axiological scale and the associative field of the respondents in relation to the concepts under study. The findings were typologized. According to the findings of the study, concepts as individual substantial mental formations, structuring and restructuring the reality of the personality, allowed to diagnose its key ideological orientations, to record the level of tolerance to " otherness " and to isolate the " problematic " concepts for each specific personality and the studied community. Thus, tolerant perception of the world was considered by the young people not as individual strategy, but as a social and group strategy, requiring unambiguous and often radical implementation. At the same time, key strategies of the world perception acted as extreme practicality, hedonism, and the priority of individual over the public on the background of extremely indulgent attitude to own shortcomings, and low level of empathy. The received results can be used for developing models of socialization of the modern youth.

Modern research and teaching of writing should be taken into account due to its important role in... more Modern research and teaching of writing should be taken into account due to its important role in the process of cross-cultural communication. Cross-cultural communication in writing involves individual and collective identification with the phenomena of culture and cultural attitudes in the written texts of different styles and genres. Under the cross-cultural communication we understand the interaction of at least two communication partners belonging to different cultural societies. In a written communication channel the circle of communicants is unlimited. Therefore, in the process of production the rules of communication and behavior are being rendered through the interaction of different national consciousness. In order to study the mechanisms of the references' implementation of linguistic phenomena to the concepts of culture, there should be conducted a discursive analysis of written texts of certain styles and genres. Besides, it should be provided with criteria for cultural conditioning of language use, as well as socio-cultural settings of texts based on the ratio of the universal and nationally-specific languages. Among the parameters of international cooperation of communicants and the style-forming role, along with their individual, social and activity-related characteristics, are also – according to the modern theory of the style – functional-communicative area in which the relevant text is produced and perceived, the kind of attitude of the subject of speech to the communication partner, and relationship to the means of expression – the language. The number and the content of highlighted parameters are not the same in different authors' texts and in different cultures. Awareness of culture, its reinterpretation is fixed by the knowledge of modern realities, by the correct verbal behavior and possession of cultural contexts of their written implementation. Language system includes the part of speech units, which reflect the facts of national culture. From to methodical perspective, the revealed features allow to develop the students' ability of cultural and linguistic introspection, to teach the culture of writing. The research of cultural identity of essays gives us the opportunity to consider the ratio of the values of linguistic units with the concepts of universal and national cultures., the circle of communicants, a discursive analysis, international cooperation of communicants, reinterpretation of culture, verbal behavior, cultural context, cultural and linguistic introspection, culture of writing, concepts of universal and national cultures.
