There are several known mold versions of this part:
6628b
circa 2001 - with square pin hole, thick walls.
6628
circa 2005 - changed to 3,2mm pin hole. There are minor changes within this version, the walls could be little thinner on some versions however this might be optical illusion because of beveling of inner edge of pinhole. Also the shape of friction ridges was changed and micro-printed "(C)LEGO" on pin could be present. Sprue mark on ball.
66906
from 2020 - shorter side slots, anti-roll notch on collar. No sprue mark on ball.

Part 6628 was produced first with square pin hole, pin had thick walls (around years 2001 - 2002), then it was changed to 3,2mm hole in pin (around years 2005 - 2007) and as I can see there is new version (66906) but i don't know differences yet. I can confirm with my collection that sets 8008 and 8010 had element 6628 with square pin hole and thick pin walls, but sets 8420 and 8271 had 3,2mm round pin hole.
