Vogue pays tribute, with a return to his show-stopping style evolution.

In October 2015, photographer Steve Schapiro wrote to David Bowie’s assistant. He asked for a small text contribution from Bowie for a volume of photos that Schapiro intended to publish. A look back at the inimitable rock star's many faces and fashions.

David Bowie (aka Ziggy Stardust) wearing a sensational creation by Kansai Yamamoto. Born in Yokohama in 1944, the Japanese fashion designer was only 27 when he held his first international fashion show in London in 1971. The Japanese division of RCA records made MainMan aware of Yamamoto’s work and Bowie purchased the “woodlands animal costume” from Kansai’s London boutique– which he wore at the Rainbow Concert in August 1972 and which was later remade by Natasha Korniloff. Bowie was widely believed to have made his first appearance as Ziggy on the BBC show on July 6 1972, when he performed hit single Starman with his band, The Spiders from Mars.

The singer gave curators at London's Victoria and Albert museum rare access to his archive of 60,000 objects for what is being billed as the first museum Bowie retrospective.
