However, secretly, he bears the face of an 'assassin', taking contracts for murder in exchange for money, a truth hidden from his family. One day, Juzo, who desires to leave Edo eventually for a peaceful life with his family, receives a new request for an assassination from the boss of the incense artisans. Although Juzo, who believes in 'cutting down only the most wicked among the wicked', feels uneasy about the target being Watasuke Yawata, a local merchant and Buddhist altar maker, he accepts the job, knowing that once he accepts, refusal is not an option.
