Dad is peeling spuds. Mum is rolling out pastry on the kitchen table. Their daughter lends a hand; she takes the peelings out to the pigs and pinches the odd strip of pastry. Dad is a fine-looking young man; Mum is a beautiful young woman. Their daughter is seven. The daughter runs out into the garden and Dad hurries after her. They return looking terrified. All three rush to the kitchen window. They stare transfixed. All of a sudden they start packing. They gather all the food they can and cram it into a basket. Mum grabs a jug of water and a tin cup. The daughter has a smaller basket in her hand; Dad stuffs clothes into a suitcase. They make their way out to the street. They open the front gate and see people running: old, young, children, women, men. Most of them have nothing. The crowd is being pushed on by armed gendarmes. The family want to help with water and food, but not everyone approves and the tin mug is soon left lying in the dust.
