Republican. College instructor; school teacher and principal; Kingsbury County Superintendent of Schools, 1936-43; writer; delegate to Republican National Convention from South Dakota, 1952 (member, Resolutions Committee). Female. Congregationalist. Died October 9, 1970 (age about 82 years). Interment at Lake Preston Cemetery, Lake Preston, S.Dak.
  Relatives: Daughter of Andrew Brooks and Susan (Stout) Brooks; married, June 19, 1918, to Charles Albert Alseth.

  Gilbert Ashville Pierce (1839-1901) — also known as Gilbert A. Pierce — of Porter County, Ind.; Illinois; North Dakota; Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minn. Born in East Otto, Cattaraugus County, N.Y., January 11, 1839. Republican. Lawyer; journalist; newspaper editor; author; colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War; member of Indiana state house of representatives, 1869; Governor of Dakota Territory, 1884-86; U.S. Senator from North Dakota, 1889-91; U.S. Minister to Portugal, 1893. Died at the Lexington Hotel, Chicago, Cook County, Ill., February 15, 1901 (age 62 years, 35 days). Interment at Adams Cemetery, Valparaiso, Ind.
  Pierce County, N.Dak. is named for him.

  Zachary Taylor Sutley (1848-1930) — also known as Zack T. Sutley — of Pierre, Hughes County, S.Dak.; Fort Pierre, Stanley County, S.Dak.; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Okla. Born in Cherry Tree, Indiana County, Pa., May 1, 1848. Democrat. Farmer; postmaster; livery business; railroad builder; alternate delegate to Democratic National Convention from South Dakota, 1908; Honorary Vice-President, 1916; candidate for Presidential Elector for South Dakota; member of South Dakota state house of representatives 28th District, 1911-12; author. German and Scotch-Irish ancestry. Died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Okla., April 17, 1930 (age 81 years, 351 days). Burial location unknown.
  Relatives: Son of William Sutley and Jane (Hays) Sutley; married 1884 to Emma Starkweather; married, January 28, 1911, to Olive B. Woods; married to Anna Bard; second cousin thrice removed of Irvin Hamilton Sutley Jr. and Richard Michael Sutley.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
