The diffusional process involving elastic collisions between charge carriers and neutrals has lon... more The diffusional process involving elastic collisions between charge carriers and neutrals has long been the predominant candidate for post‐injection momentum loss in the far wider drift region outside confined DC corona discharges in gases. A supplementary research paradigm is here put forward for the interest of a greater understanding of corona‐assisted unipolar ion flows in atmospheric air. In this respect, the auto‐pulsing mode of glow‐type coronas in air is modelled as a source of momentum whose conservation is substantially preserved across the external transfer region. The tangible prospect of charge‐bearing flows in the form of a filamentary convection, with negligible drifting component, in buffer gas is put forward in relation to spontaneous symmetry‐breaking instability. This setting bears some resemblance to the self‐organised collective behaviour of self‐propelled (active) particles. The value of this scheme gains strength precisely in relation to the strong inhomogeneity of the electric field surrounding electrodes prone to go into corona. On such a basis, it is believed that the drift of corona‐generated ions deserves to be reconsidered in view of the arguments set out in the present modelling.

This study gives new insight into unipolar coronas with special regard to the governing parameter... more This study gives new insight into unipolar coronas with special regard to the governing parameters, of practical value, for the outer edge of the ionisation region. The shape and local radius of that interface are fully determined according to a capillary-based scheme, whose original application can be explained by a long-range collective containment effect presumably exerted by internal streamers. Properly implemented indirect experiments furnish supportive features, especially used to reconstruct interfacial anomalies. The adopted cross-sectorial approach allows traditional pre-breakdown Townsend/Meek criteria to be circumvented for the benefit of computational simplification, other than precision when strongly non-uniform fields are, as usual, involved. This represents a genuine disruptive paradigm change whose additional advantages are reflected in clearer interpretations of both Kaptsov hypothesis and maximum thrust density impressed, next to the interface, to air neutrals. Even the corona current–voltage characteristic has been called into play to sustain the capillary model with convincing arguments. These claims existence of a unifying theoretical substrate for a number of pre-breakdown interfacial phenomena, whatever the state of matter.

Natural phenomena, such as gamma rays produced by radioactive decay processes in the soil and cos... more Natural phenomena, such as gamma rays produced by radioactive decay processes in the soil and cosmic radiation originating from solar flares and other galactic objects, can ionize the air molecules. This chapter first discusses ionization and deionization processes in gases. This is followed by a discussion on ionization and attachment coefficients. Two typical breakdown mechanisms occur in gases, each of them operating under specifically favorable conditions: Townsend's mechanism and the streamer mechanism. Corona discharges in air can burn on the overstressed zones of hot electrodes. This kind of discharge occupies a short layer, attached to the energized conductor. When a conductor is in corona, then the electric field on the surface is somehow influenced by the surrounding ion space charge. Kaptzov's hypothesis (KH) relates to the assumption that the space charge emitted into the interelectrode gap is in amounts that hold the surface field at the onset level.

A GTEM cell, suitable for assessing possible biological effects induced on cell samples by electr... more A GTEM cell, suitable for assessing possible biological effects induced on cell samples by electromagnetic fields at the typical frequencies of GSM mobile phones, has been designed and set up. Basic environmental requirements for in-vitro biological experiments, involving a GTEM cell, have been assessed by controlling the electromagnetic field distribution and survival conditions. The GTEM cell has been characterized by Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) and Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) measurements. The impedance matching at the terminal load section has been optimized by considering different hybridload configurations. Moreover, optimal exposure conditions forthe biological sample have been experimentally evaluated by paying special attention to the E-field scenario inside the GTEM cell at 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequencies. At last, an experimental evaluation of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is reported.

The fundamental working hypothesis adopted in this paper is that an accelerated physicochemical aging occurred on the topmost fibers of the cellulosic texture. This extremely superficial degradation is assumed as being originated by electrostatic discharges (ESD, often also referred to as partial discharges in gases, or corona effect) triggered by an exogenous electric field of seismic nature. On the basis of a purely electromagnetic treatment involving the time averaged Poynting vector and a generalized version of Lambert’s cosine law, an analogical relationship between irradiance and surface electrostatic field is acknowledged. Accordingly, some new insight into the substantially undistorted features of the impressed human figure are gained and careful arguments aimed at circumventing some difficulties in the interpretation of the image formation are discussed. ...
