Definitions
- the present invention relates to a sanitizer system for facilitating hygiene in association with access to facilities and items and a method for controlling physical access.
- Hygiene, and particularly hand hygiene is essential for reducing the spread and transmission of transmissible diseases, and important in healthcare and food facilities where bacteria can cause infectious diseases without proper precautions.
- An aspect of the invention relates to a sanitizer system
- a sanitizer dispenser unit including a sanitizer container for holding a sanitizer fluid, an exit opening through which said sanitizer fluid may leave said sanitizer dispenser unit, a sanitizer conduit extending from said sanitizer container to said exit opening, pump means for pumping said sanitizer fluid through said sanitizer conduit and out of said exit opening, flow detection means arranged to detect a flow of said sanitizer fluid through said sanitizer conduit, and presence detection means arranged for detecting the presence of an object at said exit opening, control means arranged for activating said pump means in response to said presence detection means detecting the presence of an object at said exit opening, wherein said control means are further arranged to only transmit an access signal enabling physical access when said flow detection means detect a flow of said sanitizer fluid while said presence detection means detect the presence of said object at said exit opening.
- hand hygiene is crucial, for example at hospitals, facilities relating to food, and laboratory facilities. Furthermore, in periods of epidemics and pandemics the importance of hand hygiene is potentially highly increased on a regional, national or global scale. Therefore, implementing devices and solutions which motivate, enforce, facilitate, and/or administer hand hygiene is advantageous.
- a sanitizer system is installed in association with a door and comprises a sanitizer dispenser unit and control means.
- the sanitizer dispenser system manages whether the door is opened or closed, e.g. in combination with a door actuator. When no user interacts with the sanitizer system, the door is closed. Then, when a user places a hand near the presence detection means, the presence detection means detects the presence of the hand. Based on this, control means activates pump means, such that sanitizer fluid is dispensed from the sanitizer container.
- the sanitizer fluid leaves the sanitizer container through a sanitizer conduit and exits the sanitizer dispenser unit through the exit opening, which is located near the hand such that the sanitizer fluid is dispensed on the hand of the user.
- the flow detection means detect the flow of the sanitizer fluid while it is flowing through the sanitizer conduit.
- the control means determines whether the door actuator is activated to open the door based on both the flow detection means and the presence detection means. If the flow detection means detect flow while the presence detection means do not detect the presence of the hand, e.g. if the hand of the user has been moved, then no access signal is transmitted. Similarly, if the presence detection means detect the presence of the hand, but the flow detection means do not detect flow, e.g. if the sanitizer container is empty, then no access signal is transmitted either.
- the control means transmits an access signal, which activates the door actuator, such that the user can enter a facility the door allows entrance to.
- the door actuator closes the door again, and the system is ready to receive another user.

Similarly, while an object 10 is detected by the presence detection means 9, the presence detection means transmits a signal to the control means 11. If the flow detection means 8 detect flow and while the presence detection means 9 detect an object 10, the control means
- control means 11 will receive a signal from both the flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9 simultaneously. If these signals are received simultaneously, the control means 11 will transmit an access signal, which activates the door actuator, thus enabling physical access through the door 17 to the user. If at no point the control means 11 receives a signal from the flow detection means 8 indicating flow while it also receives a signal from the presence detection means 9 indicating the presence of an object, the control means 11 will not transmit an access signal.
- control means 11 and the door actuator are in combination arranged to enable physical access for a time period, for example 10 seconds.
- the door actuator is arranged to close the door again after this time period, and subsequently, the sanitizer system 1 is ready to receive a new user.

- communication is performed between some of these individual elements, for example, the flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9 communicate to establish a single signal which is transmitted to the control means 11, upon which enabling physical access is granted, in contrast to embodiments where the control means receive two independent signals from flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9, respectively.
- the communication architecture is not restricted to any particular type, and a person skilled in the art may construct any communication architecture, which is suitable for e.g. facilitating the transmission of an access signal.
- the communication among the elements as described above is wired in some embodiments, wireless in some embodiments, and a combination of wired and wireless in some embodiments, but generally, the communication is not restricted to any particular type, and a person skilled in the art may choose any means of communication, which is suitable for facilitating the communication according to the invention.

Description
A SANITIZER SYSTEM AND A METHOD FOR CONTROLLING PHYSICAL ACCESS Field of the invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a sanitizer system for facilitating hygiene in association with access to facilities and items and a method for controlling physical access.
Background of the invention
[0002] Hygiene, and particularly hand hygiene is essential for reducing the spread and transmission of transmissible diseases, and important in healthcare and food facilities where bacteria can cause infectious diseases without proper precautions.
[0003] In many cases, measures for implementation of hand hygiene may be available, e.g. a sink for handwashing or hand sanitizer. However, these measures may not necessarily be successfully used, for example since potential users are not aware of their presence, are busy, or are absent-minded. As a result, such a lack of hand hygiene may have dire consequences, both for the personal health of users, for patients and near relations of users, and for entire populations, for example if a user is a superspreader of a contagious disease.
[0004] From the US patent application US 2016/0179089 Al, a hand hygiene system with a hand sanitizer dispensing unit, which upon activation opens a door, in known. However, there is no insurance that sanitizer fluid is successfully dispensed into a hand of a user.
Summary of the invention
[0005] The inventors have identified the above-mentioned problems and challenges related to hand hygiene, and subsequently made the below-described invention which may increase use of hand hygiene measures.
[0006] An aspect of the invention relates to a sanitizer system comprising a sanitizer dispenser unit including a sanitizer container for holding a sanitizer fluid, an exit
opening through which said sanitizer fluid may leave said sanitizer dispenser unit, a sanitizer conduit extending from said sanitizer container to said exit opening, pump means for pumping said sanitizer fluid through said sanitizer conduit and out of said exit opening, flow detection means arranged to detect a flow of said sanitizer fluid through said sanitizer conduit, and presence detection means arranged for detecting the presence of an object at said exit opening, control means arranged for activating said pump means in response to said presence detection means detecting the presence of an object at said exit opening, wherein said control means are further arranged to only transmit an access signal enabling physical access when said flow detection means detect a flow of said sanitizer fluid while said presence detection means detect the presence of said object at said exit opening.
[0007] In many contexts, hand hygiene is crucial, for example at hospitals, facilities relating to food, and laboratory facilities. Furthermore, in periods of epidemics and pandemics the importance of hand hygiene is potentially highly increased on a regional, national or global scale. Therefore, implementing devices and solutions which motivate, enforce, facilitate, and/or administer hand hygiene is advantageous.
[0008] In some embodiments of the invention, a sanitizer system according to the invention is installed in association with a door and comprises a sanitizer dispenser unit and control means. The sanitizer dispenser system manages whether the door is opened or closed, e.g. in combination with a door actuator. When no user interacts with the sanitizer system, the door is closed. Then, when a user places a hand near the presence detection means, the presence detection means detects the presence of the hand. Based on this, control means activates pump means, such that sanitizer fluid is dispensed from the sanitizer container. The sanitizer fluid leaves the sanitizer container through a sanitizer conduit and exits the sanitizer dispenser unit through the exit opening, which is located near the hand such that the sanitizer fluid is dispensed on the hand of the user. The flow detection means detect the flow of the sanitizer fluid while it is flowing through the sanitizer conduit.
[0009] In these embodiments, the control means determines whether the door actuator is activated to open the door based on both the flow detection means and the
presence detection means. Instead, if the flow detection means detect flow of the sanitizer fluid while the presence detection means detect the presence of the hand, the control means transmits an access signal, which activates the door actuator, such that the user can enter a facility the door allows entrance to. When the door has been open for a short period, e.g. from 3 seconds to 10 seconds, then the door actuator closes the door again, and the system is ready to receive another user.
[0010] Generally, the presence detection means of the invention may be arranged to detect any type of object, but preferably, the presence detection means should at least be able to detects the presence of a hand of a user. In the context of the present invention, when referring to a hand, a hand of a user, hands, or hands of a user it should be understood that other objects may also activate the presence detection means, and some embodiments may be intended for dispensing sanitizer fluid on another part of a body than a hand. However, in typical embodiments, the intention of the invention is to dispense the sanitizer fluid on at least the hands of the user. Embodiments may even comprise means for assuring that a detected object is a hand, for example a temperature detection means or an automated visual hand recognition system. In some other embodiments, sanitizer fluid may also be intended to be applied to other body parts. For example, in some embodiments, sanitizer fluid is intended to be applied to feet and lower legs of a user, and in some embodiments, the sanitizer fluid is intended to be applied to the entire body of a user. In some embodiments, the sanitizer system may also be intended for sterilizing inanimate items.
[0011] Transmitting an access signal based on both detecting a flow and the presence of an object is advantageous, since it highly increases the probability that sanitizer fluid is actually dispensed on the hand.
[0012] For example, in some embodiments, the pump means may be arranged to pump sanitizer fluid for a dispensing period which is from 0.1 seconds to 5 seconds, for example from 0.5 seconds to 3 seconds, for example for 1.5 seconds. The control means are arranged to transmit the access signal based on detecting flow and detecting the presence of the object at the end of the dispensing period. As such, the pump means are only activated in response the presence of a hand and the control means only transmits the access signal if the hand is still present at the end of the dispensing period. This highly increases the likelihood that the hand receives the amount of dispensing fluid, which is advantageous for hand hygiene. In contrast, for a sanitizer system which transmits an access signal only based on presence detection means, a busy or absent- minded person may remove the hand before it has received the intended amount of dispensing fluid, thus posing a health threat.
[0013] A further advantage of arranging control means to only transmit an access signal based on flow detection means arranged to detect flow is that it ensures that a user cannot gain physical access if the sanitizer container has been emptied of sanitizer fluid.
[0014] A further advantage of arranging control means to only transmit an access signal based on flow detection means arranged to detect flow is that it enables detection of an empty sanitizer container, upon which the sanitizer container may be refilled, e.g. by staff at a facility.
[0015] A further advantage of arranging control means to only transmit an access signal based on flow detection means arranged to detect flow is that it ensures that a user cannot gain physical access if the pump means have malfunctioned.
[0016] A further advantage of arranging control means to only transmit an access signal based on flow detection means arranged to detect flow is that it ensures that a user cannot gain physical access if the sanitizer conduit has been clogged.
[0017] A further advantage of arranging control means to only transmit an access signal based on flow detection means arranged to detect flow is that it ensures that a
user cannot gain physical access if pump means have malfunctioned, such that it is unable to pump the sanitizer fluid.
[0018] For viscous sanitizer fluid, significant air bubbles may occur in the sanitizer fluid. A further advantage of arranging control means to only transmit an access signal based on flow detection means arranged to detect flow is that it ensures that sanitizing fluid, and not air, flows through the sanitizer conduit.
[0019] As such, a transmitting an access signal at least partially based flow detection means arranged to detect flow is a highly advantageous mechanism for ensuring that the hand of a user receives the intended amount of sanitizer fluid.
[0020] Providing physical access according to the invention may for example be understood as opening a door to a facility, unlocking a door to a facility, allowing access through a turnstile, or similar means for allowing a person to access a facility, a building, a room, an elevator, a laboratory, or a section of facility/building. Providing physical access may further be understood as providing physical access to one or more objects, for example providing access to a food dispenser, a buffet, cutlery or other items relevant for dining, a computer, a polling station, or a cash machine. However, the invention is not limited to any of the above examples, and a person skilled in the art may utilize the invention to improve hand sanitation of users in relation to physical access to any object or location.
[0021] Sanitizer fluid according to this invention may be understood as any fluid or partially liquid compound which may reduce, remove, and/or eradicate any kind of contamination, dirt, bacteria, microbes, viruses, or chemicals in contact with a hand of a user, when the sanitizer fluid is applied to this hand of the user. Examples are hand sanitizer, e.g. alcohol-based hand-sanitizer, soap, water, or any combination of these. Note that the invention is not limited to reducing any of the above mentioned health risks, and may be utilized to reduce any matters which could pose a health risk when in contact with a hand of a user, wherein this health risk may be reduces by applying a sanitizer fluid. Further, any type of sanitizer fluid may be applied for doing so, and an appropriate sanitizer fluid may be chosen accordingly by a skilled person. The
sanitizer fluid is furthermore not restricted to any particular texture, fluidity, viscosity or consistency. It may for example be liquid, gel, sprayed, or foamed.
[0022] Pump means according to the invention may be understood as any type of pump or mechanism which is able to move, displace, push, transfer, and/or dispense the sanitizer fluid from the sanitizer container, through the sanitizer conduit and out the exit opening, preferably by mechanical action. Pump means may for example be based on a positive displacement pump, e.g. piston pump, a centrifugal pump, an axial flow pump, or an actuator compressing a flexible sanitizer container. The pump means may for example be electrically driven by battery or by connection to electricity mains. However, the invention is not limited to any particular pump means or power source, and a person skilled in the art may use any pump means suitable for dispersing a sanitizing fluid.
[0023] Flow detection means according to the invention may be understood as any type of flow detector which is able to detect flow. Flow detection means may for example be based on a turbine type flow meter, a magnetic flow meter, a positive displacement meter, or an ultrasonic flow meter, but the invention is not limited to any particular flow detection means and a person skilled in the art may use any flow detection means suitable for detecting a flow of said sanitizer fluid.
[0024] The flow detection means is typically communicatively connected to the control means, such that the control means can transmit an access signal based on flow. In some embodiments of the invention, the flow detection means is able to communicate a binary signal to the control means indicative whether if flow in the sanitizer conduit is present or not. In other embodiments, the flow detection means is able to communicate a representation of the magnitude of the flow, e.g. a voltage proportional the magnitude of the flow. However, the invention is not limited to any particular type of communication between flow detection means and control means, and a skilled person may use any type of communication which is suitable.
[0025] Presence detection means according to the invention may be understood as any type of presence detector or presence sensor, which is able to detect the presence
of an object, typically the hand of a user. In typical embodiments, the presence detection means are able to detect the presence of an object without physical contact to the object. Presence detection means may for example be based on a proximity sensor, an infrared detector, or a CCD combined with image processing on a data processing device. However, in some other embodiments, the presence detection means are based on physical contact, the presence detection means may for example comprise a button, a switch, or a touch sensor. Note, however, that the presence detection means according to the invention is not limited to these examples, and a skilled person may use any type of presence detection means which is able to detect the presence of an object.
[0026] The presence detection means is typically communicatively connected to the control means, such that the control means may activate said pump means and transmit of an access signal based on the presence of an object detected by the presence detection means. In typical embodiments of the invention, the presence detection means is able to communicate a binary signal to the control means indicative whether an object is detected or not. However, the communication according to the invention is not limited to this type of binary communication, and a skilled person may use any suitable type of communication.
[0027] The control means according to the invention may be understood as any type of controller or processing device, which is able to activate pump means based on input from the presence detection means and transmit an access signal based on input form the presence detection means and flow detection means. As such, the control means may for example be based on an analogue circuit, a digital circuit, a microcontroller, a programmable logic controller, a field-programmable gate array, or an associated computer system. However, the control means according to the invention is not limited to any of these examples and a skilled person may use any device, machinery and/or circuitry which is able to activate pump means based on input from the presence detection means, and transmit an access signal based on input form the presence detection means and flow detection means. The control means typically requires
electrical power and may for example receive such power from a battery or electrical mains.
[0028] Generally, any part of the sanitizer system which requires electrical power may receive such power from a battery or electrical mains.
[0029] The control means is typically communicatively connected to the pump means, presence detection means, and flow detection means. In some embodiments, the control means may also be communicatively connected to identification reading means, authorization means, and/or temperature detection means. Furthermore, in typical embodiments the control means is typically communicatively connected to some kind of physical access means, for example a door actuator, lock, or a barrier, wherein the physical access means are arranged to receive an access signal to enable physical access. Any communicative connection according to the invention may be a mechanical coupling, or electrical coupling, e.g. a wired electrical coupling or a wireless electromagnetic coupling.
[0030] In some embodiments of the invention, the various elements that the sanitizer dispenser unit includes may not be physically connected to each other. The presence detection means may for example be displaced a by some distance from the sanitizer container, the exit opening, the sanitizer conduit, the pump means, and the flow detection means, without any particular mechanical coupling. In some embodiments of the invention, the sanitizer conduit is more than 0.5 meters, such that the sanitizer container is displaceable from the exit opening, which for example allows the sanitizer container to be centrally located and/or larger.
[0031] In some embodiments of the invention, the sanitizer system may comprise an emergency function. For example, in case of an emergency, e.g. a fire, the sanitizer system may be arranged to receive an emergency signal, upon which it enables physical access to any user. The emergency signal may for example be activated by a button or switch located near the sanitizer system, or it may be activated automatically if smoke is detected by a smoke detector.
[0032] In some embodiments of the invention, the sanitizer system may additionally comprise an overwrite function. For example, if the sanitizer system is associated with a central computer system, a manager of the central computer system may activate this overwrite function from the computer system, upon which the sanitizer system enables physical access to any user. In some embodiments, the overwrite function may be locally activated, the sanitizer system may for example comprise a keycard detector arranged to detect a keycard, wherein authorization of a keycard may activate the overwrite function.
[0033] In some embodiments, the sanitizer system is arranged to react upon the sanitizer container being empty. The sanitizer container may for example be associated with a liquid level detector, which may provide an empty container signal when a liquid level is below a liquid level threshold. Or the sanitizer unit may be associated with counting dispenser events, wherein a dispenser event is associated with detection of an object by the presence detection means, and when a predefined number of dispensing events have been detected by the dispenser system, an empty container signal is established. Or the control unit may establish an empty container signal if the pump means has been activated a number of times, but the flow detection means do not detect flow accordingly. The number of times may for example be from 1 to 10, for example from 3 to 8, e.g. 5. The number of times may furthermore be a consecutive number of times.
[0034] In some embodiments, upon an empty container signal, the sanitizer system may for example activate an overwrite function, upon which the sanitizer system enables physical access to any user. In some embodiments, upon an empty container signal, the sanitizer system may activate an alarm, for example by means of light and/or sound. In some embodiments, upon an empty container signal, a central computer system may receive information relating to the sanitizer system, for example location, and time and/or duration of empty container signal. In some embodiment, upon an empty container signal, the sanitizer system is arranged to provide information to a phone/smartphone of a manager, for example by means of text messaging, voice mail, a smartphone app, email, or similar.
[0035] In an embodiment of the invention said control means are further arranged to only transmit said access signal enabling physical access when said flow detection means detect a flow of said sanitizer fluid over a predefined period of time.
[0036] A predefined period of time may for example be from 0.1 second to 5 seconds, for example 1 second.
[0037] It is advantageous to only transmit the access signal when the flow detection means detect a flow of said sanitizer fluid over a predefined period of time, since this increases the chance that sanitizing fluid is successfully dispensed at the hand of a user.
[0038] In some embodiments, the access signal is only transmitted when the flow detection means detect a flow of the sanitizer fluid over a predefined period of time and the presence detection means detect the presence of an object/hand over at least some of the predefined period of time.
[0039] In some embodiments, the control means is configured to control the pump means based on flow detected by the flow detection means. For example, if the sanitizer system is activated by the presence of a hand, which in response activates pump means, but no flow is detected, then the control means may be configured to extend the duration in which the pump means pump sanitizer fluid. This is particularly advantageous if an air bubble present in the sanitizer fluid is initially pumped out in response to activation, in which case the pump means may continue to pump until sanitizer fluid is pumped out.
[0040] In an embodiment of the invention said control means are further arranged to only transmit said access signal enabling physical access when said flow detection means detect that the flow velocity of said sanitizer fluid is over a predefined level.
[0041] It is advantageous to only transmit the access signal when the flow detection means detect that the flow velocity of said sanitizer fluid over a predefined period level, since this increases the chance that a desired amount sanitizing fluid is successfully dispensed at the hand of a user.
[0042] In some embodiments, the access signal is only transmitted when the flow detection means that the flow velocity of said sanitizer fluid over a predefined level while the presence detection means detect the presence of an object/hand.
[0043] In some embodiments, the flow velocity and flow duration are used to establish an accumulated fluid volume, which is indicative of the amount of sanitizer fluid, which has flowed through the sanitizer conduit and out of the opening in association with a dispensing event. Then, the access signal is only transmitted when the flow detection means that the accumulated fluid volume is over a predefined volume while the presence detection means detect the presence of an object/hand.
[0044] In some embodiments, a total accumulated fluid volume is established, indicative of a total amount of sanitizer fluid, which has flowed through the sanitizer conduit and out of the opening in association with a plurality of dispensing event. Here, an empty container signal may for example be established based on the total accumulated fluid volume.
[0045] In an embodiment of the invention said sanitizer system further comprises identification reading means arranged to read identification means and wherein said control means are further arranged to only transmit said access signal when said identification means have been read by said identification reading means.
[0046] It is advantageous to only transmit an access signal when identification means have been read, since this allows identification of any users which have been enabled physical access. Identification may be critical in facilities with a high level of security. Identification of users may further be crucial in tracking and backtracking the spread of a transmissible disease.
[0047] Identification means and identification reading means may for example, respectively, be based on a keycard and a keycard reader, a nametag and a nametag reader, a fingerprint and a fingerprint reader, or a person and a camera arranged to acquire an image of that person. Note, however, that identification means and identification reading means according to the invention is not limited to any of these
examples, and a skilled person may use any identification means and identification reading means which are suitable.
[0048] Preferably, the identification reading means should be communicatively connected to the control means, such that the control means may transmit the access signal based on the identification reading means.
[0049] Further, the identification reading means are typically associated with a database, in which said identification means can be stored. In typical embodiments, the database in a computer-based memory. As such, the database may comprise a record of any identification means and/or associated user which have had the identification means read by the identification reading means. The database may comprise additional information such as timestamps and information regarding whether a user was granted access.
[0050] In some embodiments, the identification reading means require a user to provide identification means, such that the identification means can be read be the identification reading means. For example, a key card reader may require a user to provide a keycard, before the keycard reader can read that keycard. In other embodiments, identification reading means may be arranged to read the identification means without any additional action from the user, for example, a keycard reader may be able to read a keycard within a distance of 2 meters, or a camera automatically acquires an image of a user, for example based on the presence detection means. In some embodiments, an image may be acquired based on a secondary presence detection means. In some embodiments, the identification means is a phone, for example a smart phone, of a user.
[0051] Typically, the identification means are arranged to automatically provide an identification signal to the control means when identification means have been read by the identification reading means, upon which the control means may transmit the access. However, in some embodiments, manual input may also be required, e.g. via a switch or a button.
[0052] In an embodiment of the invention said control means comprises authorization means and wherein said control means are further arranged to only transmit said access signal when said identification means have been approved by said authorization means.
[0053] In facilities where hygiene is important, it can also be important to restrict who enters that facility. Therefore, it is advantageous to only transmit an access signal when identification means have been approved by authorization means.
[0054] Typically, authorization means may be associated with a database, for example a database comprising information indicative of which users are to be enabled physical access by the sanitizer system. And typically, identification means are associated with a user. Approval by the authorization means may then for example be understood as comparison of the identification means with the information indicative of which users are to be enabled physical access, and the identification means are only approved when/if the user associated with the identification means is a user which are to be enabled physical access.
[0055] The authorization means is typically communicatively connected to the control means, such that an access signal can be transmitted when the identification means have been approved.
[0056] In some embodiments, each identification means, e.g. keycard, is associated with a user, and when the identification means have been read by the identification reading means, the identification means and/or its associated user are compared to a database associated with the authorization means. The database comprises a list of approvable identification means and/or users, and if the identification means and/or its associated user is on that list, the sanitizer system provides physical access (when, additionally, the flow detection means detect flow of the sanitizer fluid while the presence detection means detect the presence of a hand).
[0057] In some embodiments, authorization means comprise image processing of an image of a user, and comparison of that image with images in a database. In some
embodiments, authorization means comprise comparison of a fingerprint with a database of fingerprints.
[0058] In an embodiment of the invention said sanitizer system further comprises temperature detection means and wherein said control means are further arranged to only transmit said access signal if a temperature detected by said temperature detection means is above a predefined threshold value.
[0059] An advantage of enabling physical access based on a temperature detected by temperature detection means is that temperature detection means may be utilized to confirm that an object detected by the presence detection means is actually a body part, and not an inanimate item, since a body part is typically warmer.
[0060] Temperature detection means according to the invention may be any type of temperature detector, preferably of a type which do not require physical contact to measure temperature, but temperature detection means according to the invention is not restricted to this. Temperature detection means may for example be an infrared temperature sensor, an infrared thermometer, or an infrared camera, but the invention is not limited to these examples.
[0061] The temperature detection means may for example be arranged to measure the temperature of the object at the exit opening, which the presence detection means is arranged to detect the presence of. In some embodiments, the presence detection means is the temperature detection means.
[0062] A predefined threshold value may for example be from 10.0 degrees Celsius to 36.0 degrees Celsius, for example from 20.0 degrees Celsius to 35.0 degrees Celsius, for example 25.0 degrees Celsius or 33.0 degrees Celsius.
[0063] The temperature detection means is typically communicatively connected to the control means, such that the control means can transmit the access signal if the temperature is within the predefined temperature interval.
[0064] In an embodiment of the invention said sanitizer system comprises temperature detection means and wherein said control means are arranged to only
transmit said access signal if a temperature detected by said temperature detection means is below a predefined upper threshold value.
[0065] Infectious and transmissible/contagious diseases can often be associated with the infected person having a temperature above a normal range of temperatures, i.e. a fever. The sanitizer system may be utilized to prevent and restrict the spread of transmissible diseases by increasing hygiene, and therefore it can be advantageous to further prevent and restrict the spread by only transmitting an access signal if a temperature detected is within a predefined temperature interval, thereby preventing a potentially infected user from spreading a transmissible disease. [0066] In some embodiments, the temperature detection means is arranged to measure a temperature of a user’s forehead.
[0067] A predefined upper threshold value may for example be from 25.0 degrees Celsius to 45.0 degrees Celsius, for example from 30.0 degrees Celsius to 40.0 degrees Celsius, for example from 37.0 degrees Celsius to 39.0 degrees Celsius, for example from 37.2 degrees Celsius to 38.3 degrees Celsius, e.g. 37.5 degrees Celsius.
[0068] In some embodiments, the control means only transmit an access signal if a temperature detected by the temperature detection means is above a predefined threshold value and below a predefined upper threshold value.
[0069] In the context of a predefined threshold value and/or a predefined upper threshold value, note that there are no single agreed-upon limits for normal skin temperature. Further, note that measuring a body temperature of a person by measuring the temperature of the human skin, e.g. on the forehead or a hand, may be associated with inaccuracy and/or imprecision. Accordingly, a skilled person may select any predefined temperature interval, for example depending on how strictly physical access have to be administered.
[0070] In an embodiment of the invention said presence detection means detect the presence of an object at said exit opening touch- free.
[0071] That presence detection means detect the presence of an object at said exit opening touch-free, imply that the presence detection means is arranged detect the object, e.g. a hand, without physical contact to the hand, e.g. the presence detection means is arranged detect the hand at a distance of, for example from 0.1 cm to 10 cm, e.g. 5 cm.
[0072] To utilize touch-free detection of an object, e.g. hand, is advantageous, since touch-free detection can be implemented without moving parts, and moving parts often have a shorter lifetime before maintenance, repair, or replacement is required.
[0073] Further, touch-free detection of an object, e.g. hand, is advantageous, since it reduces the risk of a user carrying an infectious disease transmitting viruses to the sanitizer system which in turn may be transmitted to the next user of the sanitizer system.
[0074] Further, touch-free detection of an object, e.g. hand, is advantageous, since it may be quicker and easier for the user.
[0075] In an embodiment of the invention said access signal enables physical access to one or more items or facilities.
[0076] It is advantageous to employ a sanitizer system to enable physical access to one or more object or facilities, since increasing hygiene, e.g. hand hygiene of users associated with the one or more object or facilities may, for example, reduce the spread of an infectious disease.
[0077] An aspect of the invention relates to a method for controlling physical access, wherein said method comprises the steps of:
• detecting an object at an exit opening of a sanitizer dispenser unit,
• activating pump means of said sanitizer dispenser unit to pump sanitizer fluid out of said exit opening,
• transmitting an access signal enabling said physical access when a flow of said sanitizer fluid to said exit opening is detected while the presence of said object at said exit opening is detected.
[0078] The method according to the invention is advantageous since it motivates, enforces, facilitates, and/or administers hygiene, particularly hand hygiene, in association with physical access, e.g. physical access to one or more objects or facilities. Namely, transmitting an access signal at least partially based on flow of a sanitizer fluid is a highly advantageous mechanism for ensuring that the hand of a user receives the intended amount of sanitizer fluid.
[0079] The invention further relates to performing the above described method by means of an embodiment of the above described sanitizer system.
[0080] Any of the above described embodiments of sanitizer systems are advantageous for performing the method of the invention, since the embodiments may be arranged to facilitate that method.
The drawings
[0081 ] Various embodiments of the invention will in the following be described with reference to the drawings where fig. 1 illustrates an embodiment of the sanitizer system according to the invention, fig. 2 illustrates another embodiment of the sanitizer system according to the invention, fig. 3 illustrates another embodiment of the sanitizer system arranged to enable physical access to an item according to the invention, fig. 4 illustrates a flow chart according to the method of an embodiment of the invention, and fig. 5 illustrates a flow chart according to the method of another embodiment of the invention.
Detailed description
[0082] Fig. 1 illustrates an embodiment of the sanitizer system 1 according to the invention. Here, the sanitizer system 1 is arranged to enable access through a door 17, by means of a door actuator (not shown). However, note that the sanitizer system 1 may be utilized to enable access to any one or more items and/or facilities by any means.
[0083] The door actuator of the embodiment can be any type of machinery which is able to mechanically open or move the door, such that a person gains access through the door, based on a control signal, for example an access signal transmitted by control means 11.
[0084] The sanitizer system 1 comprises a sanitizer dispenser unit 2. This sanitizer dispenser unit 2 comprises a sanitizer container 3 for holding a sanitizer fluid 4, an exit opening 5 through which the sanitizer fluid 4 may leave the sanitizer dispenser unit 2, and a sanitizer conduit 6 extending from the sanitizer container 3 to the exit opening 5. The sanitizer dispenser unit 2 further comprises pump means 7 for pumping the sanitizer fluid 4 out of the sanitizer container 3 through the sanitizer conduit 6 and the exit opening 5, flow detection means 8 arranged to detect flow through the sanitizer conduit 6, and presence detection means 9 arranged for detecting the presence of an object 10 near the exit opening 5.
[0085] The individual components of the sanitizer dispenser unit may be mechanically put together in a single assembly, or one or more of the components may be mechanically disconnected. For example, in the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the sanitizer container 3 holding sanitizer fluid 4, the exit opening 5, the sanitizer conduit 6, the pump means 7, and the flow detection means 8, are put together in an assembly, whereas the presence detection means 9 is placed independently.
[0086] The sanitizer system further comprises control means 11, which is arranged to transmit an access signal enabling physical access, based on signals from the presence detection means 9 and the flow detection means 8.
[0087] In the embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the sanitizer container 3 has a volume from 0.2 liters to 5 liters, for example 1 liter, it is arranged to hold alcohol-based liquid hand sanitizer, and its material is based on plastic. It is directly attached to the sanitizer conduit 6, which fluidly connects the sanitizer container 3 to the exit opening 5, such that sanitizer fluid 4 may flow out the exit opening 5 through the sanitizer conduit 6. The sanitizer conduit 6 may for example be any kind of tubing, for example with an inner diameter of 1 mm to 10 mm, e.g. 3 mm. The material of the sanitizer conduit 6 may for example be based on silicone or plastic. However, the dimensions of the sanitizer container 3 and the sanitizer conduit 6 is not restricted to these examples and a person skilled in the art may select the dimensions and the materials 6 accordingly, preferably such that the sanitizer container 3 is able to hold the sanitizer fluid 4, and such that the sanitizer conduit 6 is able to direct sanitizer fluid to the exit opening 5.
[0088] In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the sanitizer conduit 6 is segmented wherein pump means 7 and flow detection means 8 located between the segments of the sanitizer conduit 6, but in other embodiments, the sanitizer conduit 6 is not segmented.
[0089] Additionally, the sanitizer container 3 has a top opening, which can be accessed using a key, for example via a lockable hatch (not shown). This top opening enables the sanitizer container to be refilled to sanitizer fluid 4.
[0090] The pump means 7 is arranged to pump out the sanitizer fluid 4 from the sanitizer container 6, through the exit opening 5 via the sanitizer conduit 6. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the pump means 7 is a centrifugal pump, which activates based on receiving a signal from the control means 11, for example such that a small amount, e.g. 2 milliliters, of sanitizer fluid is pumped out.
[0091] The flow detection means 8 is arranged to detect flow of the sanitizer fluid 4 from the sanitizer container 3 via the sanitizer conduit 6. In the exemplary embodiment
illustrated in fig. 1, the flow detection means 8 is based on a paddle wheel flow meter, which is arranged to establish an analogue or digital signal indicative of liquid flow in the sanitizer conduit 6. This signal is then received by the control means 11.
[0092] The presence detection means 9 is arranged to detect the presence of an object
10 near the exit opening 5, for example a hand 16 of a user. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the presence detection means 9 is based on a proximity detector, which is arranged to detect the presence of an object within approximately 5 centimeters. The proximity sensor may for example be based on emitting a beam of electromagnetic radiation, e.g. infrared light, and detecting changes of a return signal. Whenever the proximity sensor detects an object within its proximity, it established an analogue or digital signal, which is received by the control means 11.
[0093] The control means 11 is arranged to receive signals from the flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9, and it is further arranged to transmit signals to the pump means 7 and to transmit an access signal, based on the received signals. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the control means 11 is based on a programmable logic controller.
[0094] When the presence detection means 9 detect an object 10, it transmits a signal to the control means 11. Based on this, the control means 11 sends a signal to the pump means 7, which then pumps out sanitizer fluid 4 based on the received signal. While sanitizer fluid 4 flow through the sanitizer conduit 6, the flow detection means 8 detect this flow, and transmits a signal to the control means 11 accordingly. Similarly, while an object 10 is detected by the presence detection means 9, the presence detection means transmits a signal to the control means 11. If the flow detection means 8 detect flow and while the presence detection means 9 detect an object 10, the control means
11 will receive a signal from both the flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9 simultaneously. If these signals are received simultaneously, the control means 11 will transmit an access signal, which activates the door actuator, thus enabling physical access through the door 17 to the user. If at no point the control means 11 receives a signal from the flow detection means 8 indicating flow while it
also receives a signal from the presence detection means 9 indicating the presence of an object, the control means 11 will not transmit an access signal.
[0095] The control means 11 and the door actuator are in combination arranged to enable physical access for a time period, for example 10 seconds. As such, the door actuator is arranged to close the door again after this time period, and subsequently, the sanitizer system 1 is ready to receive a new user.
[0096] Generally, any signals which are communicated between elements of the sanitizer system, for example among control means 11, pump means 7, flow detection means 8, presence detection means 9, and door actuator may for example be digital or analogue signals. Typically, all the communication of the sanitizer system is facilitated by the control means 11, which may then communicate to the remaining individual elements requiring a communicative connection, e.g. pump means 7, flow detection means 8, presence detection means 9, and door actuator. However, in some embodiments, communication is performed between some of these individual elements, for example, the flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9 communicate to establish a single signal which is transmitted to the control means 11, upon which enabling physical access is granted, in contrast to embodiments where the control means receive two independent signals from flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9, respectively. As such, the communication architecture is not restricted to any particular type, and a person skilled in the art may construct any communication architecture, which is suitable for e.g. facilitating the transmission of an access signal.
[0097] The communication among the elements as described above is wired in some embodiments, wireless in some embodiments, and a combination of wired and wireless in some embodiments, but generally, the communication is not restricted to any particular type, and a person skilled in the art may choose any means of communication, which is suitable for facilitating the communication according to the invention.
[0098] Any of the elements which requires electrical power may for example be powered via the electrical mains, optionally using a transformer, or via a one or more batteries. In some embodiments, some elements are powered by one or more batteries, while others are powered through the electrical mains. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the door actuator is powered by the electrical mains, since it has a relatively large power load.
[0099] Fig. 2 illustrates another embodiment of the sanitizer system 1 according to the invention. This embodiment comprises several of the same features and elements as the embodiment illustrated in fig. 1 and described above. Additionally, the embodiment illustrated in fig. 2 comprises identification reading means 12 arranged to read identification means 13, authorization means 14 arranged to approve the identification means 13, and temperature detection means 15.
[0100] In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 2, the sanitizer system 1 is arranged grant physical access by controlling a door 17 using a door actuator (not shown). The control means 11 is arranged to transmit an access signal to the door actuator, upon which the door actuator opens the door. As in the embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the transmission of an access signal is based on signals from the flow detection means 8 and the presence detection means 9, but additionally, the transmission of an access signal is additionally based on a temperature detected by the temperature detection means 15, and based on the identification means 13 read by the identification reading means 12 and authorized by the authorization means 14. The identification reading means 13, the authorization means 14, and the temperature detection means 15 are communicatively connected to the control means 11.
[0101] To enable physical access to a user as facilitated by the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 2, several steps are required to be performed by the user of the system.
[0102] As a first step, the user has to approach the temperature detection means 15, for example with the forehead of the user. The temperature detection means 15 is associated with an auxiliary proximity sensor (not shown) arranged to detect the
whether an auxiliary object, e.g. the forehead of a user, is near the temperature detection means 15. When the auxiliary proximity sensor detects a nearby auxiliary object, a signal is provided to the temperature detection means 15 to initiate a detection of the temperature of the auxiliary object by the temperature detection means 15. If the temperature of the auxiliary object is above a predefined threshold value, for example above 25.0 degrees Celsius, and below a predefined upper threshold value, for example below 38.0 degrees Celsius, then the user is able to advance to the next step for enabling physical access as facilitated by the sanitizer system 1. If the recorded temperature is not within the acceptable temperature range, then the user cannot proceed to the next step for enabling physical access.
[0103] As a second step, the identification reading means 12 reads identification means 13. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 2, the identification means 13 is a key card with an associated user ID of the user, and the identification reading means 12 is able a wireless keycard reader, which as able to wirelessly read and detect the presence of a keycard within a short distance, for example within 1 meter or within 3 centimeters, for example based on RFID technology.
[0104] When the identification means 13 have been read, the associated used ID is communicated to the authorization means 14, for example via the control means 11. The authorization means 14 may for example be a local or a central computer system comprising a database of authorized user IDs. The user ID of the keycard is compared to the authorized user IDs, and if the user ID is one of the authorized user IDs, the user is able to advance to the next step for enabling physical access as facilitated by the sanitizer system 1. If the user ID is not one of the authorized user IDs, then the user cannot proceed to the next step for enabling physical access.
[0105] The authorization means 14 may for example be communicatively connected to the control means 11 via a cloud connection, but the communicative connection between the authorization means is not restricted to any particular type of connection.
[0106] As a third step, the used has to active the presence detection means 9, for example using a hand. Then, the pump means 7 is activated while flow detection means
8 detects flow and presence detection means 9 and the presence of an object 10 and based on this third step the control means 11 transmit an access signal enabling physical access through the door 17. The details of this third step may for example be facilitated as explained in detail above, in the description relating to fig. 1.
[0107] As such, the exemplary embodiment illustrated in figure 2 is arranged to facilitate enabling physical access based on three consecutive steps, wherein each step has to be completed, before the user can proceed to the next step, and if one of the steps is not completed, the user cannot proceed to the next step. Successfully completing all three steps grants the user access.
[0108] Embodiments of the invention are not limited to any particular steps or sequence of steps. In some other embodiments, the first and the second steps as outlined above are reversed, such that authorization via authorization means 14 has to be performed before detecting a temperature via temperature detection means 15. In some other embodiments, the three steps are performed as a signal step, i.e. the temperature detection means 15, the identification reading means 12, the flow detection means 8, and the presence detection means 9 simultaneously detect temperature, identification means 13, flow, and presence of an object 10, respectively, upon which transmitting an access signal is based.
[0109] Some embodiments of the invention comprise indicative lights to guide the user. As such, any step according to an embodiment of the invention may be associated with indicative lights, for example green and/or red LEDs, which be turned on/off to indicate whether a step was successfully completed by the user or not.
[0110] Some embodiments of the invention comprise indicative audio to guide the user, for example a pre-recorded message for guiding the user through one or more steps, and different combinations of audible tones are emitted by a loudspeaker of the sanitizer system 1 to indicate whether a step was successfully completed by the user or not.
[0111] Some embodiments of the invention comprise a display device, for example a computer monitor, which guides the user how to use the sanitizer system and/or
displays whether any of the steps of the embodiment are successfully completed or not.
[0112] In some embodiments, the presence detection means 9 is the temperature detection means 15, and sanitizer fluid 4 is dispensed if a temperature detected by the temperature detection means 15 is above a predefined threshold value.
[0113] Fig. 3 illustrates another embodiment of the sanitizer system 1 arranged to enable physical access to an item 19 according to the invention.
[0114] This embodiment comprises several of the same features and elements as the embodiment illustrated in fig. 1 and described in the associated part of the description. However, the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 3 is not arranged to enable physical access to a facility through a door, but instead it is arranged to enable physical access to an item, which is otherwise inaccessibly located in a box 18.
[0115] The box comprises a box hatch and a hatch actuator (not shown), which is a machinery which is able to mechanically open or move the box hatch, such that the user is enabled physical access to the item 19. The hatch actuator is activated based on an access signal transmitted by the control means 11. The access signal is only transmitted when the flow detection means 8 detect a flow of the sanitizer fluid 4 while the presence detection means 9 detect the presence of an object 10, for example a hand 16 of a user, for example as described in detail above.
[0116] Any embodiments of the invention arranged to provide physical access to one or more items may comprise any of the same elements and steps as embodiments arranged to provide physical access to a facility, for example through a door. Further, embodiments of the invention which enable physical access to one or more items are not restricted to do so using a box and an associated hatch actuator but may for example use a lock or dispense the item(s) from a dispensing machine. Generally, a skilled person may choose any means suited for enabling and/or disabling physical access based on an access signal for realizing an embodiment of the invention.
[0117] In some embodiments of the invention, the sanitizer system enables both physical access to a facility and physical access to an item, e.g. an access signal is arranged to open a door and is arranged to dispense an ID card to a user from a dispensing machine.
[0118] Fig. 4 illustrates a flow chart according to the method of an embodiment of the invention, i.e. a method for enabling physical access to a user.
[0119] An embodiment of the invention for facilitating the illustrated method steps may for example be based on the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, but the method of the invention is not restricted to this.
[0120] The first step is that presence detection means 9 detect an object SI, preferably a hand at an exit opening of a sanitizer dispenser unit. The presence detection means may for example be a proximity sensor.
[0121] The next step is to activate pump means S2, which is preferably performed automatically initiated when the presence detection means 9 detect an object SI, for example controlled by control means 11.
[0122] The next steps are that presence detection means 9 detect an object S3 while flow detection means 8 detect flow S4.
[0123] If these steps S3-S4 are not performed simultaneously, then nothing happens, i.e. a user is not enabled physical access. The user may then for example attempt to repeat the procedure. For example, if presence detection means 9 detect an object SI 1, but flow detection means 8 do not detect flow, then the user is not enabled physical access. Similarly, if flow detection means 8 detect flow S12, but presence detection means 9 do not detect an object, then the user is not enabled physical access.
[0124] If both the steps S3-S4 are performed simultaneously, then the next step is to enable physical access S5.
[0125] Fig. 5 illustrates a flow chart according to the method of another embodiment of the invention, i.e. a method for enabling physical access to a user.
[0126] An embodiment of the invention for facilitating the illustrated method steps may for example be based on the exemplary embodiment illustrated in fig. 2, but the method of the invention is not restricted to this.
[0127] The first step is that identification reading means detect identification means S6, for example a keycard reader reads a keycard carried by a user.
[0128] The next step is that authorization means approve identification means S7. For example, a keycard is associated with a user ID, which is compared to a database of authorized user IDs. If the user ID is within the database, then the user can proceed to the next step S8. If the user ID is not within the database, then the user cannot proceed to the next step S8 of the method.
[0129] The next step is that the temperature detection means 15 detect temperature S8, preferably a temperature of the user, e.g. temperature of a hand of the user. The temperature detection means is only activated is the authorization means have authorized the user ID. The temperature detected by the temperature detection means is compared to the predefined threshold value, and only if the detected temperature is above the predefined threshold value, the user can proceed to the next step S9 of the method.
[0130] The next step is that presence detection means 9 detect an object S9. For example, if the temperature detected by the temperature detection means 15 is above the predefined threshold value, the presence detection means 9 is activated, such that if it detects an object 10, e.g. a hand of a user, control means 11 is arranged to start the next step S10.
[0131] The next step is to activate pump means S10, which is preferably performed automatically, for example utilizing control means, when the presence detection means 9 detect an object S9.
[0132] The next steps are that presence detection means 9 detect an object SI 1 while flow detection means 8 detect flow S12.
[0133] If these steps S11-S12 are not performed simultaneously, then nothing happens, i.e. a user is not enabled physical access. The user may then for example attempt to repeat the procedure.
[0134] If both the steps SI 1-S12 are performed simultaneously, then the next step is to enable physical access S13.
[0135] In some embodiments, if a step is not successfully completed, the sanitizer system allows the user to repeat that step.
[0136] In some embodiments, if a step is not successfully completed, the sanitizer system returns to an initial state, such that all steps have to be completed again. [0137] In some embodiments, if the sanitizer system is left idle between two steps, then the sanitizer system returns to an initial state after a waiting time, such that all steps have to be completed again.
[0138] From the above, it is now clear that the invention relates to a sanitizer system which enables advantageous facilitation of hand hygiene. The sanitizer system administers access to items and/or facilities, and a user is only allowed access if the sanitizer system is used correctly. The system may for example be activated by supplying a hand, which in turn activates pump means such that sanitizer fluid is dispensed to the hand. A particular advantage of the invention is that access is only granted if flow detection means detect flow while presence detection means detect the presence of the hand, which certifies that sanitizer fluid is successfully supplied to the user.
