Description
SURGICAL RETRACTOR WITH CONNECTION TO PEDICLE SCREWS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to surgical retractors, and particularly to a retractor with a foot blade that connects to a pedicle screw, tower and the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Many types of surgical retractors are used in surgery to retract tissues, bones and other anatomical structure during surgical procedures.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention seeks to provide a retractor with a blade that connects to a pedicle screw, tower and the like, as is described more in detail hereinbelow.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will be understood and appreciated more fully from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the drawings in which:
Figs. 1A-1C are simplified front, side and sectional illustrations of a surgical retractor, respectively, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention, Fig. 1C being taken along lines A-A in Fig. IB;
Fig. 2 is a simplified illustration of the retractor with its foot blade connected to a tower (that is used to install rods and pedicle screws and the like), in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a simplified illustration of the surgical retractor, a close-up view of Fig. 2, showing the foot blade of the retractor under a set screw of the pedicle screw and the bottom of the tower on the foot blade; and
Fig. 4 is a simplified illustration of retractor blades connected to neighboring pedicle screw heads, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
Reference is now made to Figs. 1A-1C, which illustrate a surgical retractor 10, in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention.
The retractor 10 may include a shaft 12 with a length L, such as but not limited to, 50-120 mm. Shaft 12 may optionally have a flat side 13 and an opposing side 14 that is rounded with a diameter B (Fig. 1A), such as but not limited to, 5-12 mm. Alternatively, both sides of shaft 12 may be flat or curved or have other shapes. A first (e.g., upper) end of shaft 12 may include a connector 16, which may be threaded or not, connectable to a system frame (not shown).
A second (e.g., lower) end of shaft 12 may have a foot blade 18 which is connectable to a pedicle screw head or tower and the like. Foot blade 18 may extend perpendicular to shaft 12 and have an overall length C, such as but not limited to, 10-20 mm. Foot blade 18 has a toe 20 that may be perpendicular to foot blade 18 and parallel to shaft 12. Toe 20 may have a length E, such as but not limited to, 10-20 mm. Foot blade 18 preferably has a flat (upper) surface 22 that extends between shaft 12 and toe 20. The flat surface 22 may have a length D, such as but not limited to, 7-19 mm. As seen in Fig. 1A, the bottom of toe 20 may be rounded with a radius R, such as but not limited to, 3-10 mm.
Reference is now made to Figs. 2 and 3, which illustrates retractor 10 with its foot blade 18 connected to a tower 24. As seen best in Fig. 3, foot blade 18 is placed under a set screw 26 of a pedicle screw 28. Set screw 26 sits on flat surface 22. The bottom of the tower 24 can abut against foot blade 18.
Reference is now made to Fig. 4, which illustrates retractor blades 10 connected to neighboring pedicle screws 28 with the foot blades 18 underneath heads 30 of the pedicle screws 28.
Unlike prior art retractors, which have no connection to a pedicle screw head, in the present invention the foot blade 18 connects firmly to the pedicle screw head 30 and provides significantly better ease and force of retraction.
