Abstract
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of interactively generating a reminder function during a broadcast program. The present invention more particularly relates to an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising at least a first and second tuners and an electronic control unit configured to perform automatic displaying of a reminder alert.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of interactively generating a reminder function during a broadcast program.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs. In general, image display devices allow users to be timely informed of another program of interest reserved from the EPG while viewing a first program. Users, however, are not presented with an effective option to be timely informed of specific health care events, such as the taking of medications at scheduled times and in prescribed dosages.
An image display device with various features and capabilities can be provided with a multitude of tuners so as to perform viewing of a first broadcast channel and simultaneous recording of a second broadcast program. It is to be noted that apart from viewing a first program content and recording a second program content, the receiver-decoder or the image display device itself may enable various types of services including interactive functions such as picture-in-picture (PIP).
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as US2002026496, which discloses an Internet television program guide electronic-mail reminder system. The system allows a user at a multimedia system to order and receive e-mail message reminders of scheduled television events over the Internet. The user can order e-mail reminders after selecting a program from the program listings or by supplying specific user program preferences without having to consult the program listings. The user can specify when and how often the reminders will be generated and received. The user can view a list of all currently requested e-mail reminders. Entries can be added to the list or the user can cancel a previously ordered reminder. The user can order email reminders for scheduled pay-per-view programs using the system. The user can also have reminder information periodically updated and available directly on the user's multimedia system.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that patients are directed to take their prescribed dosages of medication at scheduled times based on a schedule of medications prepared for the patient by a health care provider.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method for generating an interactive informational alert as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is hence to provide a system and method by which an image display device provides an interactive alert for prescribed dosages of medication of users at scheduled times based on a schedule of medications.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general exemplary flow diagram of the algorithm implemented by the image display device according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device or a set-top box receiving programs via satellite, cable or terrestrial broadcasting for instance in the form of separate subscription formats. A set-top box may typically contain a plurality of tuner inputs, operating in connection with an image display device. Alternatively, the image display device itself can receive programs using built-in tuners.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs. A conventional structure receiving program contents receives a transport stream via a tuner. In order for viewing a first program content and processing a second program content, the receiver-decoder should have at least two tuners, which also enables various types of services including interactive functions such as picture-in-picture (PIP).
The image display device in accordance with the invention can be connected to a set-top box, the latter having at least two tuners. The image display device itself or the receiver (set-top box) can therefore have multiple tuners as well as demodulators suitable for receiving broadcast multimedia content. In this regard, receivers capable of receiving and tuning to signals of different generations (e.g. DVB-T and DVB-T2, DVB-S and DVB-S2, DVB-C and DVB-C2) can be in use.
The present invention relates to an image display device having an interactive triggering system to provide the user with a transformed medication name in the form of information codes such as XYZ for a certain prescription pill. Further, the scheduled time and the prescribed dosage of the medication are provided as three-block information in the form of a subtitle.
In accordance with the present invention, a picture-in-picture (PIP) window automatically appears on the screen at a predetermined time before the scheduled times of taking a prescribed dosage of the medication. Therefore the user is timely notified of the scheduled time for taking the medication through the PIP window.
Use of the PIP window for performing the reminder function is advantageous in that while a less intrusive screen usage is in question thanks to the existing PIP system, the user’s attention is drawn more dynamically to the PIP screen as the latter already displays an alternative broadcast program content on a predetermined channel. Such alternative program broadcast on a channel other than a currently viewed channel is more effective in drawing attention of the user to the information blocks containing information codes of the prescription pill, the scheduled time and the prescribed dosage of the medication. Therefore, these three information blocks are displayed within the PIP window area to be overlaid on the alternative broadcast program content and preferably in a flashing manner.
To this end, the user may conveniently interact with the image display device without any intrusive sound alarms or full-screen messages as in the case of known reminder systems.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the electronic control unit automatically wakes up the image display device if it is not already turned on, and while displaying a first program content also activates the PIP window and displays the respective information blocks within the PIP window overlaid on a second program content as described above.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operated such that an interactive triggering system informs the user of a prescheduled time of taking a prescribed dosage of a certain medication. The advantageous aspect of the invention lies in that the reminder function is performed by way of using the picture-in-picture window in a more dynamic and less intrusive manner.
The electronic control unit effecting operation of said image display device is configured to transform medication information as inputted by the user and generate a converted medication name in the form of an information code. The electronic control unit, when transforming a given medication name also includes scheduled times and predetermined time intervals for taking medication.
In a variation, the medication name additionally includes an image access indicator in the form of any specific shape or letter, serving for optionally allowing access to an image containing the name of medication in question. For instance in the case of a certain medication’s converted three-letter name, a still image in the form of a symbol can be accessible when the user presses the image access indicator using navigation arrows of a TV control device such as the remote control. In other words, instead of containing the full name of the medication, which would occupy considerable space, only an image access indicator, for instance in the form of a coloured circle, can conveniently allow access to a more detailed description of the subject medication and further general information about the medication from a remote database accessible through a network connection by means of a network interface card.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising at least a first and second tuners and an electronic control unit configured to perform automatic displaying of a reminder alert.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the electronic control unit of the image display device activates the automatic displaying function of a reminder alert in the manner that a broadcast program content is shown through the second tuner at a predetermined time before the actual time of the reminder alert in the form of a picture-in-picture window while another channel is viewable through the first tuner.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the reminder alert containing at least one information block is displayed within the picture-in-picture window area in the form of subtitles to be overlaid on said broadcast program content shown through the second tuner.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said first and second tuners are either terrestrial or satellite tuners.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said information block contains a transformed medication name in the form of three-letter information codes.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said information block contains scheduled time and prescribed dosage information of a medication.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said picture-in-picture window automatically appears on the screen at a predetermined time before the scheduled time of taking a prescribed dosage of the medication.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said at least one information block is displayed within the picture-in-picture window in a flashing manner.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the electronic control unit automatically wakes up the image display device, activates the picture-in-picture window and displays at least one information block within the picture-in-picture window.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said at least one information block includes an image access indicator allowing access to an image containing further information about said information block.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said image access indicator is in the form of a specific symbol selectable and pressable by means of navigation arrows of a TV remote control.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, a method for operating an image display device is proposed, the device comprising at least a first and second tuners and an electronic control unit, the method comprising the steps of: (a) activating an automatic displaying function of a reminder alert in the manner that a broadcast program content is shown through the second tuner at a predetermined time before the actual time of the reminder alert in the form of a picture-in-picture window while another channel is viewable through the first tuner and (b) displaying the reminder alert containing at least one information block within the picture-in-picture window area in the form of subtitles to be overlaid on said broadcast program content shown through the second tuner.
