Title
Arrangement of an electronic cigarette and a charger for wirelessly transferring power from the charger to the electronic cigarette, as well as an electronic cigarette and a charger for use in such an arrangement.
Description
The present application is directed to the wireless transfer of power from a charger to an electronic cigarette for charging the rechargeable battery comprised in the electronic cigarette.
European patent application EP 2,668,858 discloses an electronic cigarette and a wireless charging device for the cigarette, wherein the electronic cigarette comprises a receiving coil electrically connected with the battery, in which the receiving coil is provided in the body of the electronic cigarette and the axis of the coil is parallel to the electronic cigarette.
Further, the charging device comprises an electronic switch and a transmitting coil connected with a power source in sequence. The electronic switch is controlled by a transmitting control unit, and the transmitting coil is used to insert the electronic cigarette therein.
The housing of the charging device is provided with an inserting hole or a sleeve, which is placed correspondingly with the transmitting coil. The electronic cigarette and the wireless charging device for the same work in a non- contact manner by using an electromagnetic coupling structure.
A drawback of such a known charging device and electronic cigarette is that, due to repeatedly inserting the electronic cigarette into the inserting hole or sleeve, the charger may brake eventually.
It is an object of the present invention to provide for an arrangement of an electronic cigarette and a charger, wherein the arrangement is more robust such that the life expectancy of the arrangement is increased.
It is another object to provide an electronic cigarette and/or a charger arranged for use in the arrangement.
In a first aspect of the invention there is provided an arrangement of an electronic cigarette and a charger, the electronic cigarette having an elongated sleeve type housing, comprising:
an atomizer;
a rechargeable battery electrically connected to the atomizer;
a receiver coil electrically connected by a rectifying control unit to the rechargeable battery;
the charger having a body, comprising:
- a transmitter coil;
a transmitter coil control unit electrically connected to the transmitter coil;
wherein the transmitter coil and the receiver coil are arranged for wireless power transfer for charging the rechargeable battery;
characterized in that
the transmitter coil is a flat electromagnetic coil, the body of the charger comprises a thin shaped box having a bottom surface and a top surface connected by a circumferential edge surface, wherein the transmitter coil is mounted in the body parallel to the top surface,
the receiver coil is a flat electromagnetic coil, the sleeve type housing having a elongated circumferential wall, wherein the receiver coil is mounted in the sleeve type housing parallel to the circumferential wall;
wherein, in use, the power is wirelessly transferred by placing the receiver coil on top of the transmitter coil.
The arrangement according to the present invention is, amongst other, based on the insight that the charger should not comprise any mechanical structures for retaining the electronic cigarette, i.e. the receiver coil, during the wireless transfer of power from the charger to the cigarette. The inventors noted that such mechanical structures, when exposed to repeatedly inserting and removing electronic cigarettes therein, are more inclined to break down.
By using a flat electromagnetic coils for the transmitter coil as well as the transmitter coil, the electronic cigarette may simply be placed on top of the charger such that energy from the transmitter coil of the charger and the receiver coil of the cigarette is transferred through electromagnetic induction. As such, the wireless transfer of power from the charger to the electronic cigarette is based on an inductive coupling between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil, which is established when the receiver coil is placed on top of the transmitter coil, i.e. the cigarette is placed on top of the charger such that the transmitter coil and the receiver coil are substantially aligned.
In the context of the present invention, a flat electromagnetic coil is understood to be a coil oriented in a single plane. The diameter of each subsequent winding of the coil increases, or decreases, such that, for example a spiral coil is obtained.
The electronic cigarette, according to the present invention, comprises an elongated sleeve type housing such that the shape of the electronic cigarette resembles the shape of an actual cigarette. The housing may be comprised of any type of material, such as plastic. The shape of the intersection of the housing may be any of circular, oval, square, rectangular, etc.
According to the present invention, the rectifying control unit is arranged to control the charging of the rechargeable battery using power wirelessly transferred from the transmitter coil to the receiver coil.
In an example, the rectifying control unit is arranged to convert an alternating current voltage, induced by the receiver coil by power wirelessly transferred from the transmitter coil, to a direct current voltage such that the rechargeable battery may be charged.
According to the present invention, the body of the charger comprises a thin shaped box having a bottom surface and a top surface connected by a circumferential edge surface. According to the present invention, thin means that the distance between the bottom surface and the top surface, i.e. the width of the circumferential edge surface, is substantially less compared to any measure of length of the top surface and the bottom surface of the box.
The transmitter coil is mounted in the body parallel to the top surface, for example to the top surface of the thin shaped box. The receiver coil comprised in the electronic cigarette is mounted in the sleeve type housing parallel to the circumferential wall, for example mounted to the circumferential wall.
In the context of the present invention the body of the charger as well as the housing of the electronic cigarette are comprised of any material which is transparent for the transmitted power from the transmitter coil, i.e. the power transverses through the material. As such, a suitable material for the housing and the body may be, for example, any type of plastic.
The size of the charger, i.e. the thin shaped box is, in an example, such that it can be easily carried by a user.
In an example of the invention, at least a part of the elongated sleeve type housing is in the form of an ellipse, and wherein the receiver coil is mounted in the ellipse formed part of the housing.
The advantage hereof is that, when the electronic cigarette is placed on top of the charger, i.e. the body of the charger, the distance between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil is decreased resulting in a more efficient inductive coupling between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil. A more efficient inductive coupling between these coils results in a more efficient power transfer from the transmitter coil to the receiver coil.
In a further example of the present invention, the receiver coil is mounted such that it is in mechanical contact with at least part of the housing in circumferential direction thereof.
The receiver coil may be in the form of a halfpipe and may be mounted to the housing at the inside thereof. The advantage hereof is that the distance between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil is, in use, i.e. during the wireless charging of the electronic cigarette, decreased, while preserving the aesthetics, i.e. the look and feel, of the electronic cigarette.
In another example, the cigarette comprises indication means electrically connected to the rechargeable battery, wherein the indication means are arranged for indicating that power is wirelessly transferred for charging the rechargeable battery.
This example provides the advantage that a user is able to take notice whether the electronic cigarette is placed correctly on top op the body, i.e. such that the transmitter coil and the receiver coil are aligned. The indication means are arranged to detect the wireless transfer of power between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil and to indicate such a transfer to the user.
The indication means may comprise, for example, visual indication means, such as a light, sound indication means, i.e. a loud speaker.
In yet another example, the rectifying control unit is arranged to automatically start charging the rechargeable battery upon placing the receiver coil on top of the transmitter coil.
For example, a user does not need to press a button or the like for indicating the that electronic cigarette is placed on top of the charger, i.e. the top surface of the thin shaped box.
In a further example, the receiver coil is an elongated flat electromagnetic coil, wherein the elongated flat electromagnetic coil is mounted in the housing such that the coil and the housing are aligned in elongated directions thereof.
Further, the flat electromagnetic receiver coil may define a single plane, wherein the plane is flushed, i.e. aligned, with the housing. Such a plane is not necessarily a straight plane. The plane may be regarded as any plane in a three dimensional coordinate system.
In yet a further example, the electronic cigarette further comprises communication means electrically connected to the rechargeable battery and arranged for communicating with a mobile user equipment, such as a phone, table, laptop, etc.
As such, the advantage hereof is that it adds functionality to an electronic cigarette in the form of communicating with a wireless communication device. The communication means may, for example, be arranged to answer or decline incoming phone call.
In an even further example, the top surface of said thin shaped box is at least partly concave.
The advantage hereof is that an electronic cigarette places on top of the top surface, is held better in place, i.e. due to the concave form of the top surface of the thin shaped box, an electronic cigarette place on top thereof is inclined to move towards the lowest point of the concave. As such, the inventor noted that a transmitter coil may be mounted in the body parallel to the top surface and at the location of the lowest point of the concave, such that the efficiency of the power transfer between the transmitter coil and the receiver coil is increased.
A concave top surface of the thin shaped box thus has the advantage that the alignment of the electronic cigarette with the charger is improved.
In an example, the body comprises placement means for indicating a position of the transmitter coil. The placement means may, for example, comprise an (adhesive) label placed directly on top of the transmitter coil. Other example may include a barcode, a figure, an arrow, a box drawn on top of the top surface of the body.
In a further example, the charger comprises an electrical outlet connected to the transmitter coil control unit such that an external power source may be connected to the transmitter coil control unit.
Such an electrical outlet may be, for example, an USB connection, a DC voltage adapter connection, etc.
In an even further example, the charger comprises a rechargeable supply battery electrically connected to the transmitter coil, possibly in combination with at least one solar cell arranged on the charger, for charging the rechargeable supply battery.
An advantage of the supply battery is that the charger is made portable. As such, even in remote locations where no electrical power supply is available the electronic cigarette may be charged via using the supply battery. I n this context, the supply battery may be regarded as a backup power supply to the battery of the electronic cigarette.
In a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an electronic cigarette arranged to be used in an arrangement according to any of the examples provided above.
In a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a charger arranged to be used in an arrangement according to any of the examples provided above.
In a fourth aspect of the invention, there is provided a furniture having comprised therein a charger according to any of the examples provided above. As such, the charger is a part of the furniture, i.e. the charger is incorporated in a furniture. A furniture may be any of a table, chair, couch, bar, lighting, etc. The example provided above may be advantageous for restaurants, bars, or the like, for providing an extra service for their customers, as these customers may use a charger comprised in a furniture for charging their electronic cigarette.
In the context of the present invention, a means, or the like may also be implemented as a computer program running on a processor.
