Description

IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE WITH AUTOMATIC CEC CONNECTIVITYUPDATE FUNCTION
The present invention relates to an image display device High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) control arrangement in a Consumer Electronics Control (CEC).
It is well-known that it is a widespread demand to connect a sink device to a source device such as for instance an audio-visual apparatus or a tablet computer via an HDMI cable. A sink device and a source device can mutually transmit and receive video image and audio data as well as a CEC command in a CEC network. The HDMI standard utilizes the CEC protocol to provide advanced functions between devices in an HDMI-connected network.
The HDMI is therefore a digital audio and video interface standard allowing a variety of devices to be connected together as a network. Such devices may include a DVD player, television, audio/video receiver, or a video game console.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as EP2424268, which defines an RF remote control paired with a first device that is paired with a second device via HDMI-CEC upon a user operation. The pairing method uses a system including a television receiver as the first device having a display unit, a moving-image playback device as a second device connected to the first device via HDMI-CEC, and a radio frequency remote control having been paired with the first device.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that a specific function so as to enable the users to determine and select a certain number of devices defined within a CEC network to be automatically turned on upon turning on of said image display device. To this end, a user can prepare a master list according to which a plurality of source devices are automatically turned on or powered upon powering of the sink device. The destination device in this regard serves to the purpose of automatically activating a plurality of source devices upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operated to automatically activate a number of source devices upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which a destination device automatically operates a number of source devices upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions.
The present invention proposes an image display device connected to a plurality of external source devices through HDMI cable insertion means in a CEC network. Said image display device has a visual interface on which the users can determine a master list of CEC devices that are set to be automatically activated at a time when the image display device is turned on. The visual interface provides a first list including all devices previously connected in the CEC network and a second list including all devices presently connected in the CEC network.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which a destination device automatically operates a number of source devices, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which an image display device is operable for selecting a plurality of source devices in a list of previously and currently connected CEC devices.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which an image display device is operable for activating a plurality of source devices in a list of predetermined CEC devices.
The present invention proposes an image display device enabling the users to determine and select a certain number of devices defined to fulfil a specific function within a CEC network. The CEC network can typically be realized such that a sink device is connectible to a source device via an HDMI cable. In this manner, the users can typically view visual content saved for instance on a tablet computer, directly on the image display device. It is to be noted that two devices linked in the CEC network can transmit and receive video image and audio data as well as a CEC command to and from each other. To this end, the present invention provides that a given user is provided with the opportunity to define and select a certain number of linked devices to be automatically turned on upon turning on of the image display device. Therefore, the control method ensures that a first HDMI cable insertion means associated with the image display device and a second HDMI cable insertion means associated with an external source device connect with each other to fulfil the method steps of the invention. The image display device typically is a broadcasting receiver such as a TV and the external source device can be a DVD player, an STB (Set-Top Box) and the like. According to the present invention, the image display device presents the users with a first list including all the devices previously defined and connected in the CEC network and a second list including all the devices presently connected in the CEC network. In this step, the image display device automatically updates the second list including presently connected devices. The updated list of presently connected devices are then displayed to the user such that he/she can select and/or unselect those he/she prefers to be turned on each time the image display device is turned on. This list is then saved when confirmed. The first list including all the devices that were previously connected is intended to be displaying those devices that are not currently connectible, hence informing the user that the HDMI cable insertion means associated with a given non-connectible external source device should be checked. Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which an image display device is operable in this regard for selecting a plurality of source devices in a list of previously and currently connected CEC devices. In a nutshell, the present invention proposes an image display device comprising at least one HDMI cable insertion means connectible with at least one external source device having an HDMI cable insertion means in a CEC network, said image display device being operable to visually present a first list including all devices previously connected in the CEC network and a second list including all devices presently connected in the CEC network.
According to the present invention, Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which an image display device is operable for activating a plurality of source devices in a list of predetermined CEC devices. In the event that the user determines and saves a list of CEC devices he/she prefers to be turned on each time the image display device is turned on, the next time the device is turned on, the CEC devices as previously set by the user to be automatically activated are checked whether they are connectible and a respective activation signal is sent accordingly. Device activation is typically implemented by way of sending a respective CEC command so as to turn on the respective source devices. In a nutshell, said image display device is operable to receive a master list of CEC devices from the users such that the CEC devices being determined are automatically activated at a time when the image display device is turned on.
According to an embodiment of the invention, said image display device is operable to automatically update said second list including presently connected devices such that the updated list of presently connected devices is displayable to the user.
In a further embodiment of the invention, said image display device is operable such that a selection is performable within the updated list of presently connected devices as well as within said first list including all devices previously connected in the CEC network.
In a still further embodiment of the present invention, said image display device is operable such that the CEC devices in said master list are checked whether they are connectible and a respective activation signal is sent at a time when the image display device is turned on.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, said image display device is operable such that device activation is implemented by way of sending a respective CEC command so as to turn on the respective external source devices.
According to the method for operating the image display device, the present invention provides that said method comprises the steps of a) receiving a master list of CEC devices from the users and b) automatically activating the CEC devices being determined at a time when the image display device is turned on.
In this regard, the invention ensures that a user will not need to use a plurality of remote controllers for turning on various peripheral devices such as the DVD player or the like. This advantageously provides a simple and very practical solution to the time-consuming and relatively complex task of using a plurality of remote controls. This can especially become troublesome for older users who are not that much familiar with or interested in simultaneously using a plurality of remote controls.
