Cover plate 11 for a cell phone 40, comprising at least at least one rim 20 for at taching the cover plate 11 to the cell phone 40 and at least one at least partially transparent area 21 with a recess 12 for insertion of a picture card 50 permits to combine simple personification of the cell phone 40 and at the same time to reinforce the cell phone's structure (40).

Field of the invention
The invention relates to a cover plate for cell phones, for protecting in particular the edges of a cell phone.
Description of the related art
Cell phones (American English), as well referred to a as mobile phones (British English), often get worn and ugly as a result of everyday use. For protection of cell phones protective sleeves, masks and shrouds have been suggested and are commercially available.
US 20011/0201394 discloses a protective mask for a cell phone consisting of an upper and an lower cover body, both being formed by mold ejection of plastic. Patterns, names or the like can be printed on the lower cover body.
German utility patent DE 202 03 580 Ul discloses an elastic ribbon, forming a loop. The ribbon is stretched and drawn over the four narrow sides of a cell phone. Thereby the edges of the cell phone are protected. Such elastic ribbons are commercially available as "bumpers".
A different approach for protecting of surfaces of cell phones is to cover at least parts of the cell phone, e.g. the display or the rear side with an adhesive foil. These foils protect the cell phones from scratches and the like, but offer only a low enforcement of the cell phone. Often these foils have additionally a decorative function and may be used to personalize the cell phone, e.g. by printing picture on the foil before attaching it on the cell phone.
Summary of the invention The problem to be solved by the invention is to provide an efficient protection of a cell phone and at the same time the possibility of personalizing the cell phone. Solutions of the problem are described in the independent claim. The dependent claims relate to further improvements of the invention.
The cover plate for a cell phone comprises at least one rim for attaching the cover plate to the cell phone. The cover plate further comprises at least one at least partially transparent area with a recess for insertion of a picture card.
The cover plate may for example protect the rear facing side of a cell phone. The rim may serve as bumper for protection of the cell phone's edges. At least the rim is this preferably of some elastic material, like rubber, silicone or the like. The front facing side may at least be essentially uncovered, thereby permitting full access to operational controls, like for example a touch pad.
A picture card can be inserted into the recess before attaching the cover plate to the cell phone. The picture card is thus positioned between the rear facing side of the cell phone and the transparent area of the cover plate. The picture card permits in a very easy way to personalize the cell phone. The picture card can be replaced easily by simply releasing the cover plate from the cell phone.
The picture card is preferably a lenticular print. Lenticular prints produce the illusion of a 3D image, this means the print has a depth, or permit the illusion of motion in the print. A lenticular print is made from at least two pictures, which are combined with a lenticular lens. The uneven surface of the lenticular lens is covered by the at least partially transparent area of the cover plate, thereby rendering the appearance of the lenticular print more naturally, when viewed through the window like at least partially transparent area.
Adjacent to the recess is preferably at least one rest for supporting a facing side of a cell phone, which in the given example is the rear facing side. The depth of the rest corresponds preferably to the thickness of the picture card, e.g. a lenticular print. This means the depth of the recess is at least about (±15%) the thickness of the image card. This yields an even changeover between the rest and the picture card and thereby reduces punctual loads on the cell phone. Preferably the recess may have at least one protrusion for fastening the cover plate to the cell phone by engaging at least one edge or pleat of the cell phone. This yields a reliable attachment of the cover plate to the cell phone, by at the same time protecting the cell phones edge(s). The rim may have at least one opening for providing access to at least one operating control at the narrow side of the cell phone. Cell phones often have at least one operating control, like control buttons, control wheels or switches on their narrow sides. Some cell phones have microphone inputs or loudspeaker outputs on at least one of their narrow sides. The opening permits easy access to the operating controls and/or as well acoustic connection of a user of the cell phone with the microphone(s) and/or loud speaker(s).
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the cover plate has at least one through hole, e.g. in its base plate. The through hole is preferably positioned just before a camera lens and/or a flashlight of the cell phone. This permits a camera lens and/or a flashlight to receive and/or emit, respectively, light through the cover plate. Preferably the through hole is conical, this means it has with an increasing distance from the cell phone an increasing diameter. Thereby stray light and cast shadow is reduced. Preferably is at the cell phone facing side of the trough hole a preferentially circumferential rim. The rim permits on the one hand to safely position the picture card in the recess of the cover plate and at the same time to provide a rest for the cover plate facing side of the cell phone.
Description of Drawings
In the following the invention will be described by way of example, without limitation of the general inventive concept, on examples of embodiment with refer- ence to the drawings.
Figure 1 shows an isometric view of a cover plate attached to a cell phone. Figure 2 shows a front view of the cover plate attached to the cell phone. Figure 3 shows section A-A of the cover plate attached to the cell phone. Figure 4 shows section B-B of the cover plate attached to the cell phone. Figure 5 shows a Detail of Fig. 4. Figure 6 shows an exploded view of a cover plate, picture card and a cell phone.
An isometric view of a cover plate 10 being attached to a cell phone 40 is shown in figure 1. The cover plate 10 can be released from the cell phone. The cell phone 40 has as usual four narrow sides 41, 42, 43, 44 (right narrow side 42, see Fig. 2) a front facing side 45 and a rear facing side 46 (see Fig. 3). The cover plate 10 has an at least essentially planar base plate 11 with a circumferential rim 20. As can be seen in the front view of Fig. 2, the rim 20 encloses the four narrow sides 41, 42, 43 and 44 of the cell phone 40 like a frame and has recessed openings 23 permitting a user to access control elements 47, being positioned at the top narrow side 41 and at the left narrow side 44. Like depicted in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the rim 20 has a protrusion 22, which engages with the front facing side 45 of the cell phone 40. In the depicted example the protrusion 22 engages with an edge of a step like recess 48 (cf. Fig. 3 to 5)
Figure 3 shows a section of the cover plate 10 along plane A-A. For simplicity the cell phone is shown as hole, i.e. unsected. The base plate 11 is essentially transparent and has on its cell phone 40 facing side a recess 12 (see Fig. 6) into which a picture card 50 is inserted. The picture card 50 may e.g. be a lenticular print.
As can as well been seen in Figures 4 and 5, the recess 12 has a circumferential boundary 15 with protrusions like 13 for securing the picture card in the re- cess 12. The height h of the boundary 15, which is in other words the depth of the recess, is about the thickness of the picture card. Thus, the rear facing side 46 of the cell phone rests laterally on the picture card and a rest 14 of the cover plate 10. So to speak the circumferential boundary 15 forms a step with a height h, which is at least approximately (+-~15 %) the thickness of the picture card 50. The inner contour of the rim 20 is adapted to the contour of the narrow sides 41, 42, 43 and 44. The outer contour of the rim 20 is slightly inclinded, as indicated by the angle a, to permit the cover plate being easily removed from a molding form. The rim extends slightly over the front facing side of the cell phone 40, as indicated by the distance a.
As can be best seen in Figures 3 and 6, the base plate 11 has a through hole 25, permitting a camera lens and/or a flashlight to receive and/or emit, respectively, light through the base plate 11. The through hole 25 is conical, this means its diameter(s) decreases with decreasing distance to the cell phone. Thereby, stray light entering the camera lens and cast shadow of the flash can be reduced. On the cell phone facing side of the through hole is a rim 26 as rest for the cell phone. The rim 26 engages into a complementary hole 55 in the picture card 50 and thereby safely positions the picture card 50 in the recess. In addition the orientation of the picture card 50 relative to the cover plate 11 is well defined, as the position of the trough holes 25, 55 is asymmetric with respect to the shapes of the recess 12 and the picture card 50, respectively.
Figure 6 shows an exploded view of the cover plate 10, the picture card 50 and the cell phone 40. The rest 14 surrounds the recess 12 has a recessed grip 29, which permits to remove a previously inserted the picture card 50 from the recess 12 and to place a different one in the recess 12. Subsequently the cover plate 10 may be attached to the cell phone 40 such that the cover plate 10, the picture card 50 and the cell phone are in a relative position as shown in Figures 1 to 5. Claims

Claims
1. Cover plate (11) for a cell phone (40), comprising at least
- at least one rim (20) for attaching the cover plate to the cell phone,
- comprising at least one at least partially transparent area (21) with a recess (12) for insertion of a picture card (50).

characterized in that
at least one rest (14) is adjacent to the recess (12) for supporting a facing side of the cell phone (40).
3. Cover plate of claim 1 or 2
characterized in that
a lenticular printing is inserted in the recess (12) as picture card.
4. Cover plate of one of claims 1 to 3
characterized in that
the rim (20) has at least one protrusion (22) for fastening the cover plate (11) to the cell phone (40) by engaging at least one edge (48) of the cell phone (40).
5. Cover plate of one of claims 1 to 4
characterized in that
the rim (20) has at least one opening for providing access to at least one operating control (47) at a narrow side (41, 42, 43, 44) of the cell phone (40).
