Description

DESCRIPTION
A CAR PARK GUIDANCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEM AND A METHOD FOR
THIS SYSTEM
The Related Art
The invention relates to submitting information obtained from parking areas for vehicles to drivers in real-time and carrying out the reservation and payment procedures in electronic environment through this information. The invention relates in particular to a system that allows drivers to see, through mobile devices or any other device connected to the Internet, parking areas that are close to their location or a location close to their location of preference, number of unavailable parking areas, car park subscriptions and parking area features all together and in real-time, and the method for operation of that system.
The Prior Art
Significant increase is being experienced in vehicle purchases and driving as a result of heightened living standards and gradually increasing individual needs. Ever growing number of vehicles on road traffic each and every day leads to insufficiency of parking areas, and a continuous traffic jam. Due to ever increasing number of vehicles on road traffic each an every day, those drivers who can not find parking areas join the traffic and an additional crowd consisting of vehicles seeking parking areas in traffic is formed. Therefore, it is highly important for drivers living in big cities to instantly access to information such as how much room there is in car park areas, how much is charged for parking subscriptions.
Although location or subscriptions of car park areas do not show huge differences, it is a continuously changing parameter how much room is available in a parking area. Therefore, a driver moving towards any car park in order to park his car can at times not find a parking area at a car park and starts search for a different car park or parking area. This situation on the other hand carries traffic jam which is densely experienced in big cities to an upper level than it is. However, indication of amount of free spaces through only the road signs is not enough. Similarly, allocation of an employee for pointing free spaces in street parking areas by the road sides on the other hand brings about a cost. Besides, other systems indicating free parking areas can direct drivers only within the car park; however, they can not let them know to which car park or parking area they are required to proceed. A driver who enters into a parking area which is full seeks another parking area when he is unable to find a free space or consumes fuel by driving along until when he finds a free space within the same parking area. While inability to consume fuel efficiently bring about a cost for the driver, carbondioxide emission lasts for a long time due to vehicle kept in running.
In the prior art, improvements have been made in many subjects such as efficient use of car park areas, parking of vehicles at car parks wherein vehicles are parked, identification of the location where the vehicle is parked, monitoring entries into and exits from car park and so on. During search of the inventions incorporating the prior art, a European Patent Application numbered EP1297496 titled "Method and System for Organising the Payment of Parking Services" was encountered. That invention is about a method and system for organising paid car parks. It is a system covering a parking area having a special code, a mobile communication instrument, data base of mobile network operator and mobile communication instrument of car park employee. A prepayment account has been opened at the database of car park service operator for customer and Money is transferred from the customer's account, prepayment account or credit account opened up for contracted customer to the account of car park in order to pay for the car park service. In line with the information provided, said invention is trying to introduce a convenience only for payment. A development such as instantly informing driver about the parking area is not in question.
Another application encountered during the search performed on the other hand is the invention numbered TR200200397 titled "Car park Guidance System". That invention on the other hand relates to an electronic measurement and redirecting system for insertion of a vehicles entering into closed car park to the nearest free parking area. The invention identifies availability - unavailability status of parking area through receiver - transmitter peers mounted on the ceiling of each one of parking areas. A central computer allows status of free parking areas and their numbers to be seen by drivers by means of communicating with electronic direction indicators. In this invention on the other hand driver is shown free parking area inside after the vehicle coming from a short or long way enters into parking area. Therefore, driver does not know if there is afree space inside the area or not before entering into the parking area. In case all of the parking areas are unavailable, he waits for a area to become available or seeks another parking area. As a result, a system informing a driver of free parking areas at that area prior to arriving at parking area could not be developed thereof.
A different invention on the other hand is PCT application numbered WO06096848 titled "Automated Parking System, Method and Computer Program Product". The invention comprises a sensing sub-system for identifying fullness status of vehicle parking area, said sub-system produces a signal indicating the parking area as unavailable or free in real-time, and a not unavailable mode. For transmission of the unavailability status information, it comprises a communication sub-system integrated with the sensing sub-system and a guidance subs-system for its reception and that guidance sub-system changes it by making use of the signal given automatically according to availability or unavailability of said parking area. The invention on the other hand identifies free space information within the parking area through a sensor/sensing sub-system redirects driver of a vehicle to free space within parking area accordingly. There is not a situation in question such as informing beforehand.
As a result of the searches carried out, a system that redirects a driver of a vehicle to the nearest parking area, indicates the parking fee, displays the location of the parking area and the driver on a map, allows parking reservation according to the free space information, was not encountered.
In conclusion, developments are being made in systems used for selection of parking areas and the method for guidance of these systems, therefore new embodiments that will eliminate the disadvantages mentioned above and will bring solutions to existing systems are needed. Purpose of the Invention
The present invention relates to car park guidance and information system and method meeting the requirements mentioned above, eliminating all of the disadvantages and introducing some additional advantages.
A purpose of the invention is development of a car park guidance and information system providing drivers to display, through mobile devices or any device having Internet connection, parking areas that is nearby their location or nearby a location they access, the number of free parking areas, parking fee and parking area properties/services in unison and real-time.
Another purpose of the invention is to be able to reserve free parking area in the parking area until the driver arrives parking area or to be able to make payments for parking fee over the system. With the system, drivers are redirected to parking areas having free spaces and if they wish so, they can carry out the processes of making reservations and payments over that application.
Another purpose of the invention is submission of parking areas nearby the driver's location or nearby a location they want in form of a list, selection of a parking area from the list for reservation and the driver, taking as the fee, distance criteria as the basis, is able to make comparison among these parking areas, and thus entitles the right to make a choice accordingly.
Another purpose of the invention is to be able to render a location - based service providing monitoring of the number of free parking spaces in all of the car park locations adapted to the system by the driver in real-time.
Another purpose of the invention is that drivers are able to view the parking areas nearby their location or nearby a location they want to access on a map. Thus, driver is able to learn how he can reach the car park by proceeding in the direction according to their current location.
Another purpose of the invention is provision of efficient use of parking areas and minimisation of time and money spent for finding a free parking space. Another purpose of the invention is reduction of vehicle density in the traffic and lower the costs of fuel thanks to driver's driving by identifying earlier the location of the parking area he is to park thereof. When spent fuel amount is reduced, carbon dioxide emission is also reduced.
Another purpose of the invention on the other hand is that the guidance and information system is applicable both confined car parks and open parking areas. A further purpose of the invention is to be able to carry out the processes such as adding new parking areas to the system, updating the number of free parking areas by car park employees over a communication device, if a sensing system in the parking areas is not available. Still another purpose of the invention on the other hand is that drivers are able to enter into the system the information such as parking area fee, parking area address, services rendered in the parking area, parking area capacity, etc. To realise that, when a paid or free parking area is emptied or a free parking area is found, drivers can submit that information to the server. In addition to this, since such information is entered into the system by the driver, other drivers are notified of its reliability.

In this detailed description, the preferred embodiments of the parking area guidance and information system and method, which is the subject of the invention, are disclosed only for better understanding of the subject, and in a manner not constituting any restrictive effect.
The guidance and information system which is the subject of the invention identifies availability and unavailability information of parking areas (21) in a parking area through a sensing system (22) and transmits the information about identified available and unavailable parking areas to Free space calculation module(23) by means of a digital data transmission bus (22.1). The free parking space information in the parking area (21) is an analogous data and it is transmitted to the sensing system (22) over data transmission bus (21.1). Information about the number of free spaces calculated in the Free space calculation module(23) is transmitted, by means of a data communication bus (23.1), to the network (50), and over the network (50), on the other hand, to control centre (10) again by means of a data transmission bus (13). The data in the control centre (10) on the other hand are transmitted to the driver's inquiry device (30) over said network (50) by means of data communication bus (34). That data communication bus (34) allows the inquiry device (30) to be in communication both with the control centre (10) and the map server (40) over the network (50). The map server (40) is digital map servers such as Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, and it accounts for displaying on a map on the inquiry device (30) the driver's location, the nearest parking areas that the driver is located or are the nearest parking areas he is located or wants to access. The map server (40) similarly performs data communication over the network (50) through a data transmission bus (41). That data communication consists of map images, and is displayed on the screen of the inquiry device (30) (Figure 1).
The sensing system (22) varies according to the structure of parking areas. For example, installing one sensor at the entrance and exit in a parking area that has a single entrance and exit is sufficient for calculation of the number of free parking areas (21) by means of subtracting the number of the vehicles making an entry from the number of vehicles making a departure. However, in parking areas (21) by roadsides all of the parking area requires to be monitored through sensors. The sensors can be,
- optical sensors working with the principle of emission of light, consisting of a transmitter or a source of light and a receiver to receive the beams of them, receiving the light on frequency that the source of light located in the transmitter through the receiver and activating its exit upon catching light on the same frequency by comparing these two frequencies of light,
- sonar sensors capable of providing contact-free sensing, not only sensing objects, in any media wherein air is present, but also measuring the distance of objects to the sensor, making measurements by compensating changes in environmental conditions (temperature changes, etc.),
- weight sensors located at the parking area (21) wherein vehicle is to be positioned and sensing the weight difference when vehicle is parked,
- cameras sensing free parking areas (21) through utilisation of image processing methods. In a similar way, sensing of free parking areas (21) can be made by the roadsides or in the open parking areas by making use of satellite images.
Free space calculation module(23) re-calculates the number of free parking areas when the number of free parking areas (21) is decreased or increased, by obtaining information from the sensing system (22) according to status of availability/unavailability. It does not perform a different process when there is no change in the number of total free parking areas (21 ) . In the data transmission buses (13,21.1 ,22.1 ,23.1 ,34,41) wired connections such as Ethernet, USB, or cellular connections such as IEEE 802.11 , 3G, 4G, EDGE, wireless connections such as Bluetooth, ZigBee or compositions, combinations of them can be used.
Data coming to the control centre (10) are controlled through at least one server (11) making calculations, processing data and sending data to communication interfaces. The server (11) allows entering of free parking area (21), parking area (21) subscription fees, campaign and discount information into the system and inquiring of this information by drivers. Data entry to the server (11) or data inquiry can be carried out through inquiry device (400) by using Internet browser, e-mail or text messaging (SMS). If the area the driver of a vehicle wishes to use as a parking area (21 ) is unavailable, alert can be sent to the driver when the parking area (21)is emptied. Data checked on this server or servers (1 1) are transmitted to data collection unit (12) in order to be stored. The data collection unit (12) saves all the queries made and the free parking areas (21) quantities available in the parking areas. In addition, environmental factors that could affect fullness rate of parking areas (12) are also placed under record. How much of space is reservable can be calculated according to how full the parking areas (21) were full on which days, what hours, under what environmental factors in the past. Since the number of reservable areas (21 ) changes according to spontaneous information coming from parking areas (21), keeping reserved area (21) vacant for all day long is not required anymore. In order to specify parking areas (21) on map, the map of the relevant area needs to be obtained from the map server (40). If the inquiry device (30) used has the feature of GPS (Global Positioning System), the nearest parking areas to the driver's location can be inquired. Apart from that, with the system which is the subject of the invention, by marking on the map the destination point intended to arrive, the driver can list the nearest parking areas (21) to the marked point. If said inquiry device (30) comprises the features of GPS and Internet access, route can be drawn on the map with information supplied by the map server (40). The driver can write comments comprising his affirmative or negative opinions about the parking areas (22) thanks to this inquiry device (30) or he can make up his mind about the parking area he will prefer by reading the comments written accordingly. The inquiry device (30) can be devices such as computers (31), cellular phones (32), smart phones (33) and so on.
He can get the parking area (21) reserved through the inquiry devices (30) and can pay for the parking area (21) fee in electronic medium. Reservation and payment information are reported to operator and/or attendants of the parking area. After reservation and payment are made, an approval information is sent to the inquiry device (30). On this approval information, barcode, 2-d barcode or number sequence is formed. Parking area operator and/or attendant have that approval information. Thus, the driver who arrives at the parking area (21) he has reserved to park his car matches by comparing barcode, 2-d barcode or number sequence on this approval information with the one in the attendants. Or it can machine-read in automatic systems or by typing in through a keyboard, reservation and payment information is validated accordingly.
In the processes of payment and reservation, a user name and a password are created for the driver in order to provide security of the driver. While confidential and sensitive information such as card information that need to be provided during payment are being sent, encrypted secure communication methods that the device supports are employed.
Car park guidance and information system can provide to make listing only the parking areas (21) having the preferred criteria in desired order according to certain filters or sorting criteria by the driver. This selection is performed by selecting sorting criteria so a sorting can be made as in the screen image provided in Figure 6. This criterion can be fee, proximity, amount of free space and similar on a multiple choice list. Selection of the criterion and arrangement of sorting in ascending or descending order can be made by means of an on-off switch, as in the filters. The car park guidance and information system performs the following functions:
- Through the inquiry device (30) he has, the vehicle driver queries the nearest parking areas according to his location at the time or the location of the target point he wants to access, through the search unit(100). - The driver compares the displayed parking areas with one another according to the results emerging as the result of inquiry by keeping the information such as subscriptions, distance to his location or the location of target point in perspective, comments on service and similar and chooses the one that is the most appropriate for himself. In order for making said process of comparison, parking areas (21 ) are displayed by the comparison unit (200) and said data for each parking area are submitted to the driver.
- Through the Comment unit (300), comments on the parking areas displayed in list after inquiry can be entered.
- Following comparison made by taking into account certain criteria, vehicle's driver may reserve the parking area (21 ) he chooses by using the reservation unit (400).
- The payment unit(600) on the other hand provides carrying out of the payment process in electronic medium by stepping in after reservation.
- Apart the driver, updating of parking area (21 ) information in the data collection unit is performed by means of update unit (700).
- Addition of a new parking area to the system on the other hand is made through the add-on unit (80).
As a result of carrying out of parking area (21) through the search unitdOO), screen prints of the driver displayed on the inquiry device (30) in the car park guidance and information system which is the subject of the invention are as follows:
- The driver gets the information of the nearest parking area to his location and whether there is free parking area (21 ) in that parking area or not through the unit (30) he uses as inquirer by pushing the function buttons (35) available on the unit thanks to the system installed in the inquiry device (30) (Figure 3). For automatic listing of the nearest parking areas to one's location, there must be GPS in the unit (30) being used and an applet must be used. If a inquiry device (30) not having GPS feature is being used, present location or the location of target point is marked on the map on the applet and the nearest parking areas to the marked location can be listed. However, if the applet used for operation of the system is not already installed on the inquiry device (30) used, the driver is able to perform queries or data entries after he has accessed to the web page through the Internet browser. For example; while he is able to get connected to maps.google.com through an applet, a process can be performed by also being connected through the Internet browser.
- When the driver pushes function button (35) after he has entered address information of his location or of the target point he intends to access in order to find the nearest car park area to himself, a result list is created and displayed on the screen of the device (30) comprising the information such as the address information of the driver's location and addresses, hourly subscriptions of the nearest parking areas to himself and the distance of the car park to the driver's location. Therein, it is supposed that the driver's system does not have a device such as GPS, etc., that can sense and report one's position. In this case, the driver has to enter the target point or his location to the system manually. While this process can be performed by putting a mark on the map, it can also be carried out by typing in the address information to an entry box. Another method that could be applied on the other hand is to enter positional information into the sysem with a sequence such as first selection of the current town from a list that pops up, afterwards selection of the current quarters or street.
- Distances of car park areas found as the result of inquiry to driver's location or to the location that the driver intends to access can be displayed on the map. The driver who is able to prefer car park areas according to his location on the map can access to the car park area by selecting the route he is to follow through the map (Figure 4).
- The vehicle driver can review the information pertinent to the car park area he wishes among the listed results by using selection button. For example, the information of how much payment will be made during the time stayed in the car park area according to the type of the vehicle can be learned in this way. Thus, the driver can choose the car park that is suitable for himself in terms of distance and fee and depending on his choice, he can get one of the free parking areas located in that car park area (Figure 5). However, the driver can limit search according to certain criteria. He can provide display the results by filtering them for example according to whether the parking area is paid or not, accepts credit card or not, comprises a motorcycle parking area or not. (Figure 4)
