Definitions
- the object of the present invention is a process that consists in obtaining diesel fuel from vegetable or animal oils by adding hydrogen in the presence of catalysts at suitable temperature and pressure conditions. This process differs from similar ones in that the residence times are shorter, which can reduce the size of the reactor and the consumption of hydrogen, thereby decreasing the costs of equipment construction and operation. Likewise, the products obtained by this process are part of the invention.
- the application WO2006 / 100584 also aims to solve the problem of diesel fluidity at low temperature and for this purpose it proposes hydrotreatment and isomerization of vegetable oils in a single reactor.
- the spatial velocities handled in this process range between 0.5 h "1 to 5 h " 1 .
- the hydrotreatment processes mentioned above are carried out at spatial speeds between 0.5 h "1 to 5 h " 1 , which are the LHSVs normally used in the oil industry.
- the applicant has surprisingly found that because it is the vegetable and animal oil of a different origin from the oil, it has a different reactivity that allows to explore other ranges of space velocities, which give rise to the present invention.
- the process claimed here exceeds the existing results in the state of the art.
- a reactor capable of processing 2000 liters per day using existing technology in the state of the art could process 12,000 to 15,000 liters per day of pure vegetable or animal oil if the technology used for the present invention, reducing hydrogen consumption by up to 40% in relation to the amount required by previous technologies.
- the claimed process comprises the steps of heating, reaction, separation by decantation and optionally, a previous stage of mixing of oils and hydrocarbons and / or a stage of distillation separation, as shown in Figure 1.
- the sequence of Steps that characterize the invention are explained below:
- step 2 Pass the oil from step 1 through a reactor filled with a catalyst composed of a porous solid material on whose surface active metal sulfides have been deposited.
- the hydrotreatment reaction is carried out at a temperature between 28O 0 C and 45O 0 C, pressure between 5.0 MPa and 15 MPa, space velocity between 5.1 h "1 and 9.0 h " 1 and a hydrogen ratio per oil load between 178 L of H 2 per liter of oil and 534.3 L of H 2 per liter of oil, which surprisingly allows the reactions that transform the oil into the desired products in the diesel range, with a shorter residence time and with a reduction of up to 40% of hydrogen consumption.
- vegetable or animal oil can be used as raw material in a stream of 100% purity or in mixtures with an amount of hydrocarbons ranging from 0 to 99%.
- the process comprises an additional prior stage, before heating, which consists of mixing the vegetable oil stream and the hydrocarbon stream, which is done in line at a temperature such that the vegetable oil acquires fluidity suitable for mixing with the hydrocarbon load.
- Another embodiment of the invention includes a distillation separation stage at the end of the process, which is carried out by conventional procedures in order to separate streams, depending on the boiling point.
- the inclusion of this separation stage is preferred for processes with space velocities above 7.5 h "1 .
- the catalyst of the second stage comprises a porous alumina support impregnated with metal sulphides of Ni and Mo or Ni and Co.
- the great advantage of this invention is that the hydrotreatment process of vegetable oils under these conditions allows for short reaction times, which make it possible to work with smaller reactors than those traditionally used for a given load flow, if compared with the reactors required for existing processes. This fact has a direct impact on the construction costs of these plants, which, when operating at high pressures, require specialized manufacturing materials and techniques, whose prices increase markedly with the size of the reactor.
- one embodiment of the invention comprises the addition of vegetable oil directly in an intermediate part of the reactor or between reactors when the process is carried out using several reactors in series.
- the low residence times also give rise to another embodiment of the invention, in which the reaction stage (5) is carried out in tubular reactors, which in some cases can be integrated into the furnace (4), so that the tube inside the oven It is filled with catalyst (4/5) thus eliminating the need for independent equipment to fulfill the reactor function, as shown in Figure 3.
- Tests were conducted in pilot plant with pure palm oil, at spatial speeds between 6.6 h “1 and 8.0 h “ 1 , using a conventional catalyst for paraffin hydrotreatment in order to obtain a main product within the distillation range of the diesel.
- Table 2 comparatively presents the characteristics of the fuels obtained by hydrotreating palm oil at different space velocities and comparing them with those of an extra diesel (DE).
- cetane indexes which are much higher for fuels obtained by hydrotreating palm oil, is noticeable, even though it is obtained at very high space velocities, which makes these products very attractive to be part of a commercial fuel.
- Table 3 shows the characterization of mixtures in different proportions of extra diesel with fuels obtained from palm oil at high spatial speeds. It is observed that the characteristics of the mixtures are similar to those of extra diesel.
- Table 4 Power, torque and fuel consumption in a diesel cycle engine with different fuels and mixtures.
- Table 4 demonstrates that tests conducted with mixtures of fuels obtained from diesel and hydrotreated palm oil at high space velocities have lower fuel consumption, even at low additions of hydrotreated oil at high space velocities.
