Abstract

When, according to the invention, a support (3) for a child seat (7) is constructed such that, in case of a collision of the vehicle, the child seat (7) may be moved a distance forwardly during suitable deceleration, the child is protected against harmful impact forces. This is achieved by means of an energy-absorbing member (10), which is disposed in the support (3), and which is capable of absorbing energy in an effective manner simply by being deformed. The absorption of energy is adapted to the movement such that it increases in step with the deformation which takes place during the forwardly directed movement (12) of the child seat. This ensures that the child is subjected to as small impact forces as at all possible.

Description

A CHILD SEAT TO BE MOUNTED IN A VEHICLE
The invention relates to a child seat to be mounted in a vehicle, preferably on an adult seat, said child seat being secured via a displaceable support so that, in case of a collision, the child seat will be displaced forwardly to reduce the impact force to which the child is subjected.
The prior art
Known are several different ways in which a child seat may be mounted so that, in case of a collision, it may be moved a distance forwardly against a controlled force, whereby the travel of the child seat will comprise partly the deformation of the vehicle, partly the counterforce, absorption, incorporated in the child seat. This reduces the impact force to which the child is sub- jected during the deceleration to about half the impact.
An example of child seats of this type is known from the description of DE 103 51 753 A1 , which describes a child seat which is secured to an adjustable movement inhibitor which may be adapted to the weight of the child by means of an adjustment device. It must be assumed on the basis of the description that the adjustment device comprises a friction device of some type.
Another example is a deformable movement inhibitor, as it is known from FR 2 887 210 A, where the movement inhibitor is formed by an energy-absorbing foam which fills a closed space. In case of a collision, the foam is compressed until a damper is broken.
A further example of absorption of energy is known from US 2,997,325. This absorber comprises springs which are compressed at a collision, and throttle valves through which a compressed mass may be discharged to restrict the forwardly directed movement.
All of these known structures are constructed to decelerate a forwardly directed movement with a constant absorption of energy in the entire length of the movement. This does not give the desired progressive absorption which is of decisive importance to the safety of the child in case of a collision, as the child seat is brought to a stop at the maximum absorption. Therefore, at strong impacts, it is not certain that the entire energy is absorbed during the movement of the seat, and thereby the child. Conse- quently, there is a risk that the child will suffer injury by a sudden braking.
The object of the invention
It is the object of the invention to improve the safety of a child in a child seat, and this is achieved according to the invention when the child seat comprises a support having a resilient member in a housing, said body being disposed between a fixed front side of the housing and a pressure arm extending up through an opening in the housing, said child seat being secured on said pressure arm such that, in case of a collision, the child seat may be moved forwardly while the pressure arm deforms the member.
In this surprisingly simple manner it is possible to establish a progressive deceleration, as, at the beginning of the movement, the deformation is limited, but absorbs more energy in step with the increase of the deformation during the forward movement of the seat. Hereby, the deceleration will be progressive, and the safety of the child will be enhanced to a considerable degree.
When, as stated in claim 2, a hollow member is used as an absorption member, it is ensured that the absorption member may be dimensioned in accordance with the weight of the child, both with respect to thickness and with respect to outer dimensions.
When, as stated in claim 3, a length of pipe of aluminium is used, a soft and progressive deformation is achieved during the compression of the length of pipe.
When, as stated in claim 4, weakened lines are provided on the member, a progressive absorption is achieved by arranging the weakened lines in the area in which the deformation begins, as the resistance to deformation may be increased in step with the movement forwardly.
Finally, it is expedient, as stated in claim 5, to mount the support with the child seat on the vehicle by means of ISOfix brackets, since this will secure the attachment in a simple manner.
The drawing
An example of an embodiment of a child seat according to the invention will be described more fully below with reference to the drawing, in which
Fig. 1 shows a child seat mounted on an adult seat, seen from the side,
Fig. 2 shows a section through the support secured to the adult seat,
Fig. 3 shows the support, seen from above.
Fig. 4 shows the child seat during its forward movement,
Fig. 5 shows a sectional view of the support during deformation of the member, and Fig. 6 shows the support, seen from above, during the deformation.
Description of an exemplary embodiment
Fig. 1 shows a child seat 7, which is mounted on a support 3, the energy absorber, which is in turn secured to the adult seat 1 by means of belts or straps 4, 6.
The child seat 7 is secured against the backrest 2 of the adult seat in a generally known manner, and such that it may be moved a distance forwards in case of a collision.
As shown in figs. 2 and 3, the support 3 is configured as a housing 13 with walls to define a cavity.
This cavity accommodates a deformation member 10, which, in the case shown, is shaped as a length of pipe that rests on the base member in the housing 13. This length of pipe may be of aluminium, and it may be provided with weakened lines to ensure a suitable absorption ability, as will be explained later.
The member 10 may have other shapes than the one shown and may be placed differently according to the need for absorption.
An upwardly extending arm 8 rests against the rear edge of the member 10 and extends upwards through an opening 11 , which, in the case shown, is a gap extending in the direction of movement, shown in fig. 3.
A flange 9, on which the child seat 7 is secured, is provided at the top of the arm 8. Finally, the actual support 3 with the child seat 7 is secured to the vehicle 14 by means of so-called ISOfix brackets. This bracket comprises a locking part 4, which may be inserted into a reception part 5, which is secured 6 to the seat 1 or the vehicle 14.
The effect of this structure will then be explained with reference to figs. 4 - 6.
A frontal collision will cause a forwardly directed movement, shown as an arrow 12 in fig. 4, and have as a result that the child seat 7 with the child will begin a forwardly directed movement, during which the arm 8 will be pressed against the member 10, which will begin to deform, as indicated in the drawing.
The deformation should preferably be progressive so that the absorption of energy will increase in step with the movement of the child seat and thereby of the arm 8.
With a suitable selection of material and dimensions, the member may be adapted to the weight of the child and thereby the need for absorption of energy in the direction of movement 12.
As will appear from the foregoing, this child seat with absorption of energy involves no risk of failure at all, for example that springs may break or liquid or foam may leak, and there will be no risk that the child seat will be moved rearwardly after the absorption of energy, thereby causing injury to the child.
Finally, the child seat is so simple that there is no possibility of functional failure, just as it has a relatively low weight and is easy to mount.
