Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cable management device.
- cables such as telecommunication cables may be tied together into a bundle by use of flexible plastic straps, the straps having an elongate tongue portion with an eyelet at one end through which the other end of the tongue portion may be threaded to provide a loop around the cables cooperating detent formations engage the eyelet and the tongue portion to prevent the loop from loosening.
- Another technique is to tie the cables together using a fine thread such as a nylon thread. However, this is time consuming and can damage the cables as the thread digs into the cable. Later adjustment of the position of individual cables in the longitudinal direction is also difficult or impossible.
- the invention provides a cable management device having cable retention cavities each having a cable support portion for housing a respective cable and a relatively narrow entrance portion through which the cable can be inserted into the respective cavity by resiliently deforming the entry portion from the cable support cavities Opening section defining sections of the cable is opened.
- the cavities can be arranged in a row, with the entrance sections of the cavities being arranged on one side of the device.
- the cavities of a row may be arranged longitudinally at locations along the respective side, so that in the direction of extension of the rows these locations are longitudinally offset with respect to the locations of adjacent cavities in the other row.
- the cavities in each row may be evenly spaced along the row, with the spacing between adjacent cavities being the same in each row and the offset in the longitudinal direction being half the spacing between adjacent cavities.
- the sections of the cable management apparatus defining the entry section may be parts of tongue-like sections arranged between adjacent cavities.
- the cable management device may be formed as a molded body of resilient plastic material.
- the invention also provides a cable assembly comprising a cable harness formed from a plurality of adjacent cables held in a cable management device as described above. At spaced locations along the length of the wire harness, more than one of the devices may be provided. Preferably, cables of the cable harness are arranged on correspondingly arranged cavities in each device.
- the invention also provides a method of laying multiple cables by engaging and holding the cables in the cavities of the cable management device of the invention.
- the cables can be engaged and held in the cavities of the cable management device before the cables are laid.
- the routing of the multiple cables may be accomplished by pulling the cables while engaging and holding them in the cavities of the cable management device.
- the cables mentioned may be telecommunication cables.
- FIG. 1 shows a plan view of the cable management device designed according to the invention
- FIG. 2 shows a side view of the cable management device from FIG. 1,
- FIGS. 3 and 4 are opposite perspective views of the cable management device of FIG. 1;
- Figures 5 to 8 are partial views showing how a cable is inserted into the cable management apparatus of Figure 1, and
- Figure 9 is a perspective view of a cable assembly having a plurality of the devices shown in Figures 1 to 4.
- the cable management device 10 shown is in the form of a molded plastic article with a flat, elongated, generally rectangular body 12. On each of two opposite longer sides 14, 15, the body 12 has a respective row 16, 18 of cable retention cavities 20.
- the cavities 20 have a part-circular cable support portion 22 and a relatively narrow entrance portion 24 open to the respective side 14 or 15 of the body ,
- the entrance portions 24 are defined between tongue-like portions 26 of the body 12. These sections 26, apart from those at the end, lie between adjacent ones of the cavities 20 in each row 16, 18.
- Each section 16 has, except those at the end, as shown a projecting portion 36 and at its outer end a laterally enlarged head portion 38.
- the tongue-like portions 26a at the end define only curved tongue-like projections.
- Figures 5 to 8 show the manner in which a cable 30 is inserted into a cavity 20 of the device 10.
- the cable 30 is brought to the device 10 so that it approaches the entrance portion 24 of the cavity.
- the cable contacts ends of the tongue-like portions 26 on either side of the input portion 24 ( Figure 7) and causes the tongue-like portions 26 to resiliently deflect outwardly ( Figure 7) by an engagement process about the entrance portion 24 of the cavity 20 to widen until the cable passes through the input portion 24 to enter the cable holding portion 22 of the cavity.
- the tongue-like portions 26 then return to their original shape to close the entrance portion 22 of the cavity 20 so that the cable 30 is neatly housed in the cavity 20 and the portions 38 of the tongue-like portions 26 covering the entrance portion of the cavity Define cavity, counteract removal.
- the cables 30 may be removed by pulling laterally on the cable to resiliently deform the ends of the tongue-like portions 26 outwardly so that the cable may pass through the thus-enlarged input portion, after which the portions 26 are naturally spring loaded return to their rest positions ( Figure 1).
- the cavities 20 of the row 16, 18 on one side of the apparatus 10 are offset relative to those in the row 18, 16 on the other side by an amount corresponding to half the pitch between cavities in a row. As shown, this makes it possible to reduce the side-to-side distance between the centers of cavities in one row and the centers of the cavities in the other row so that the side-to-side dimension of the device 10 is smaller, a more compact one Arrangement of the inserted cable is achieved and less material to form the device 10 is required. This may also result in a somewhat more flexible device, which may be desirable to facilitate deforming the device 10 as a whole to permit the insertion or removal of a cable 30 into or out of a cavity 20 if one or more adjacent cavities already have cables are occupied.
- the cable assembly 40 in Figure 9 has a harness 42 having a plurality of cables 30 connected to cable management devices 10 as described above.
- the devices 10 are disposed at spaced locations along the harness and receive the cable harness forming cables 30 in respective ones of the cavities 20. Accordingly, the cables are kept in a neat and orderly physical arrangement. Ensuring that, for example, each cable 30 in a respective cavity 20 is received at the same location on each device 10 facilitates visual identification of individual cables along the length of the cable harness, even though the cables do not carry specific outer identification marks.
- the cavities are circular in view of the intended use with the described circular cables.
- the pitch circle representing the circumference of the cable holding portion 22 of the cavity may constitute a circle segment of about 60-85%.
- the input section 24 may represent a gap for the cable entrance, which in the natural configuration of the device 10 is about 20% smaller than the cable diameter.
- the diameter of the cable holding portion 22 may be about 25% larger than the diameter of the cable 30.
- the shape and size of the cavities may, of course, be adapted to the shape and size of the cables 30 with which the device is to be used ,
- the device may be made of any suitable material, especially a material with suitable natural suspension. It has been found that flexible polycarbonate material is suitable.
