Description

AN OPENING VEHICLE ROOF FOR STORAGE IN THE SIDE SECTIONS OF THE VEHICLE
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to an opening vehicle roof for storage in the side sections of the vehicle, in a fully or partly open position, comprising at least two laterally movable roof sections.
BACKGROUND ART
On the market today, there are cabriolets with collapsible roofs. The collapsible roof either consists of folding tops produced from a sheet material or metal roofs, so-called "hardtops", which on conversion of the covered vehicle into a cabriolet, are folded together and down into the luggage compartment.
Both the folding tops and the collapsible sheet metal roofs suffer from the drawback that, in the collapsed state, they are stored in the luggage compartment and thereby take up a considerable part of the space there, in which event the luggage compartment is correspondingly reduced in size and cannot be utilised to the full.
PROBLEM STRUCTURE
The present invention has for its object to design the opening vehicle roof described by way of introduction so that it obviates the drawbacks in the prior art technology. In particular, the present invention has for its object to design the opening vehicle roof so that it frees up the space in the luggage compartment, in the collapsed state of the vehicle roof. SOLUTION
The object forming the basis of the present invention will be attained if the opening vehicle roof described by way of introduction is characterised in that the vehicle roof comprises longitudinal slats which partly constitute the vehicle roof, in a closed position, and at least two cassettes in which the slats are stored, in the open position, the cassettes being lowerable into the side sections or doors of the vehicle.

Fig. 4 is a schematic part view according to Fig. 3, with the vehicle roof in a partly open position;
Fig. 5 is a schematic part view according to Fig. 3, with the vehicle roof in a partly open position; and
Fig. 6 is a schematic view with the vehicle roof in a fully open position and moved down into the door or side section of the vehicle. DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
In the following description, directional indications will be given, such as forwards, rearwards, upwards, downwards, to the side etc. These directional indications relate to directions for a person sitting in a driver's position in a vehicle with the steering wheel placed to the left.
Fig. 1 shows a vehicle from above with three doors. The vehicle has an opening vehicle roof 1 for lateral storage in the side sections 3 or doors 2 of the vehicle. The vehicle roof 1 may be employed in a partly or fully open position. In the partly open position, the vehicle roof 1 is only partly open upwards, and in the fully open position, the vehicle roof 1 is fully open upwards.
The opening vehicle roof 1 comprises at least two laterally displaceable roof sections 4 which include longitudinal slats or ribs 5. The slats 5 partly form the vehicle roof 1, in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 1. The roof sections 4 further include at least two cassettes 6 disposed on either side of the vehicle.
In that case when the vehicle is a three-door model with a short roof and without a rear passenger seat, one cassette 6 is disposed on each side of the vehicle, at the driver's seat and the passenger's seat. In that case when the vehicle is a three-door model with a relatively long roof and with a rear passenger seat, or is a vehicle with five doors, one cassette 6 may be disposed on each side of the vehicle, at the driver's seat and possibly the passenger's seat and/or on either side of the rear passenger's seat.
In the partly or fully open position of the vehicle roof 1, the slats 5 are stored in the cassettes 6 which are lowerable into the side sections 3 or doors 2 of the vehicle. The slats 5 are displaceable in the lateral direction in their substantially horizontal positions for horizontal storage one above the other. Alternatively, the slats 5 are pivotal from a substantially horizontal position, in the closed position of the vehicle roof 1, to substantially vertical positions, shown in Fig. 2, in the partly open position of the vehicle roof 1, in which event the slats 5 are displaceable in the lateral direction in their substantially vertical positions for vertical storage beside one another.
The cassettes 6 are disposed on raisable and lowerable side posts (not shown). The side posts are disposed in or at longitudinal edges of each respective vehicle door 2 for those vehicles that have three doors and have no rear passenger seat, as well as for those vehicles that have five doors.
In vehicles with three doors and with a rear passenger seat, the side posts may also be disposed at the rear and substantially vertical edges of the rear side windows.
In the open position of the roof, the cassettes 6 are disposed in the doors 2 or side sections 3 of the vehicle. The cassettes 6 may be disposed in an upper region 7 of the vehicle doors 2 or side sections 3, the upper region 7 being formed from a substantially horizontal bulkhead across each respective side window of the vehicle. Alternatively, the cassettes 6 may, in the open position of the roof, be disposed in a central area of the doors 2 or side sections 3 of the vehicle, preferably beneath the lower edge of a side window in the raised position of the side window. When the cassette 6 is stored in the central area of the vehicle, the cassette 6 may then form an armrest. Alternatively, the cassettes 6 may, in the open position of the roof, be disposed in a lower area of the doors 2 or side sections 3 of the vehicle, preferably flush with or over the body sills of the vehicle doors 2.
The vehicle roof further includes at least a front and rear cross beam 8 and 9 which extend over the vehicle from one of the longitudinal sides of the vehicle across to the other longitudinal side of the vehicle. The cross beams 8 and 9 have guides in which the slats 5 run on opening or closing of the vehicle roof 1. The guide on the front cross beam 8 is directed rearwards towards the rear cross beam 9, and the rear cross beam 9 has a guide which is directed forwards towards the front cross beam 8. The front cross beam 8 is preferably disposed at the upper region 10 of the windscreen and the rear cross beam 9 is preferably disposed at the upper region 11 of the rear windscreen. The vehicle roof 1 may further include one or more cross beams (not shown) which are disposed between the front and rear cross beams 8 and 9. The cross beams which are disposed between the front and rear cross beams 8 and 9 are employed when cassettes 6 are disposed on each side of the front seats and the rear passenger seat. The cross beams that are possibly disposed between the front and rear cross beams 8 and 9 have guides directed forwards towards the front cross beam 8, as well as rearwards towards the rear cross beam 9. All cross beams may be displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, in which event they run in guides, disposed in the upper edge of the doors 2 and side sections 3 of the vehicle.
Those parts of the vehicle roof that are disposed along the longitudinal side sections of the opening vehicle roof 1 may be secured in the cassettes 6 and are, together therewith, lowerable into the side sections 3 or doors 2 of the vehicle, and so a fully open cabriolet without upper side sections to the doors can be realised. Alternatively, those parts of the vehicle roof that are disposed along the longitudinal side sections of the opening vehicle roof 1 may be independent and free of the cassettes 6, in which event only the cassettes 6, with the aid of the raisable and lowerable side posts, are lowerable down into the side sections 3 or the doors 2 of the vehicle, and so a half-open cabriolet, with upper side sections formed by the side windows and their surrounding frames can be realised.
Figs. 3 to 6 schematically show views of the function of the opening vehicle roof. The views show as one example only that embodiment in which the slats are displaceable in the lateral direction in their substantially horizontal position. In the views, an axis X is shown which is disposed in the longitudinal central plane of division of the vehicle.
Fig. 3 shows half of the vehicle roof 1 in a fully closed position, with the slats 5 disposed side-by-side. Figs. 4 and 5 show how the slats 5 are displaced laterally and stored horizontally one over the other under the upper side regions 7 in the vehicle doors 2 or the side sections 3, there being created an opening 12 and the vehicle roof 1 is open. Fig. 6 shows the slats 5 and the upper regions 7 in the vehicle door moved to the lower region of the vehicle doors 2 or the side sections 3. This takes place with the aid of the raisable and lowerable side posts. Closure of the opening vehicle roof takes place following the reverse sequence to that described above.
DESCRIPTION OF ALTERNATIVE EMBODIMENTS
In one alternative embodiment, the cassettes 6 may, in the open position of the roof, be disposed in the upper U-shaped frame of the vehicle door 2, preferably in the upper, substantially horizontal beam. The U-shaped frame is separable from the lower region of the door and movable down into the lower region, with the side window of the vehicle door 2 lowered or raised.
According to the present invention, it is also possible to form the vehicle roof asymmetrically so that the slats 5 are moved aside laterally in one direction only. In this embodiment, the cassette or cassettes will only occur at one side of the vehicle.
