Definitions
- This invention relates to a system for constructing windows which may be deployed in vertical or non vertical locations, for example, in the rafters of a pitched or flat roof.
- this Multi Purpose Window system allows for a window to be opened fully outwards, fully inwards and in a variety of new modes.
- the profiles for this window system can be made in a wide range of materials for example, U.P.V.C., wood, resin wood etc., and will take standard ironmongery.
- Windows currently available on the market have a restrictive double frame format and open using "tilt and turn” mechanisms and/or friction stay hinge mechanisms. These window mechanisms, especially when involving larger windows, are frequently subject to breakdown if not handled carefully or are operated in high wind conditions.
- the Multi Purpose Window System offers the facility to create a robust, versatile, high performance window which matches or exceeds current regulations or building code requirements, which will not readily breakdown even in high wind conditions.
- a triple frame format comprising an outer (1), middle (2) and inner (3) frame as shown on figure 1.
- this window is operational from both sides when vertically deployed. However when non vertically deployed, as in a pitched roof, the side as shown in figure 2 is preferable to form the outside, while the window shown on figure 1 the inside.
- the window may be operated with (a) one handle or (b) two handles and from either side as shown on figures 3,4,5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings. Due to the present invention's triple frame format and special internal grooves and ironmongery linkage as shown in figure 7 which I shall presently describe in detail, the window may also be operated from any side and any quadrant an example of this is shown in figures 8 and 9. I shall now describe the movement and linkage of the espagnolette type ironmongery used in a one handled vertically located window.
- Figure 11 shows a two handle example of the profiles necessary to make frames (1), (2) and (3) and is similar to figure 10. As shown on figure 11 this version requires only two eurogrooves (6) .
- this one handled version employs friction stay (18) and storm hinges (19) in a different orientation and on the opposite side to that shown in figure 12 further, a large number of other orientations are available using the triple frame format also a handle or handles may be employed on any side or quadrant to drive and operate the mechanism.
- Figure 14 shows the inertia reel belt attached to frame (3) and connected through the inertia reel box housing (21) to the inertia reel mechanism (not shown) contained inside the housing (21) which is secured to frame (1) as shown in figure 14.
- the window is fully opened extra belt may be pulled out from the housing so the belt will not present an obstruction in an emergency.
- an alternative method of preventing explosive opening for large windows an example of this is shown in figure 15.
- a cord (23) is connected to frame (3) and through frame (1) and around a double pulley (24) and is attached to a counter - balanced weight (25) another cord is connected to frame (3) as shown in figure (15) and through frame (1) and around a single pulley (22) and up and around the double pulley (24) then connected to the counter - balance the workings are contained in a duct housing (27) and secured to the rafter (28).
- FIG 16 this detail is primarily but not exclusively for low pitched roofs to avoid water penetration.
- the primary gaskets (31) FIG 16 are also shown.
- FIG 17 shows a section through the bottom of the window.
- a plate (35) is fixed to the adjoining member (2) by means of screws (34).
- This plate (35) houses the primary and secondary gaskets (31) and (32) respectively.
- This special transom (30) is a moulded member which houses the opposing primary and secondary gaskets (31) and (32) respectively, should any water get past the primary gaskets (31) then drainage holes (33) allow water to pass through the special transom (30) but not beyond the vein (36).
- Another aspect of the present invention provides for circular and non-square window fabrications examples as shown on FIGS 18, 19, 20.
