Definitions
- the invention relates to a medical gas consumption recorder.
- the invention relates to a bedside gas consumption recorder for use in hospitals, infirmaries, and at any sick bed.
- the inventor is aware that at present, when a gas, such as oxygen, is administered to a patient in a hospital, neither the patient, nor the hospital, nor the patient's medical insurance or medical aid can accurately determine the amount of oxygen consumed over the period of stay of the patient in the hospital.
- a gas such as oxygen
- the inventor is aware that at present the flow rate of medical gasses are measured at the point of administration by the use of a pressure regulator and rotameter type flowmeters. A nurse or other medical staff will periodically note down the flowrate and this will form the basis of the determination of the total amount of a medical gas administered to a patient. This type of system does not take factors into account such as flow rate variations, patients turning off the gas flow when not being monitored, technical problems, and the like.
- the invention provides a medical gas consumption recorder, said recorder including: a pressure switch located in gas flow communication with a gas of which the consumption is to be measured; measuring means operatively connected to the pressure switch and configured to record a measurement when the pressure switch detects a preset minimum gas pressure; and electronic circuit means for operatively connecting the pressure switch to the measuring means, for displaying the total measurement over a measuring period, and for processing of data associated with the measuring means.
- the recorder may include a housing, having an LED display connected to the electronic circuit means, and a gas inlet, the pressure switch being located at least partially within the housing.
- the housing may include a gas outlet.
- the housing may include a gas flow passage located between the inlet and the outlet.
- the recorder may include reset means for resetting the displayed value, for example, once the measurement has been recorded in paper or other format.
- the electronic circuit means may be a PC-board.
- the reset means may be in the form of a button located on the housing, this reset button may be pressed to zero the display.
- the recorder may operate on 12V DC.
- the pressure switch of the recorder is connected in gas flow communication with a regulator, a flow meter, a wall mounted gas connection, a gas cylinder, or the like.
- the pressure switch is connected in gas flow communication with a face mask, a nose piece, or other gas administering device.
- the gas flow is activated, for example by actuating the regulator or flowmeter, the gas pressure increases on the pressure switch thereby activating the pressure switch which in turn activates the measuring means and any associated portion of the electronic circuit means whereby the measured value is displayed on the LED display.
- the pressure switch deactivates the measuring means and any associated portion of the electronic circuit means thereby ceasing to increase the measured value which is being displayed on the LED.
- the measuring means may be a timer, in which case the instantaneous or the average flow rate of the medical gas is known, and the period of time for which a flow is detected is directly related to the quantity of gas administered to the patient.
- a nurse or member of staff may record the reading on the LED display on a medical chart so that a correct analysis of the course of treatment, as well as of the total quantity of gas administered is recorded.
- the medical chart may be a modified medical chart including a field for recording the measured gas administered.
- the recorder may be connected to a chart recorder so that the measurement is automatically recorded on a chart for later analysis, if required.
- the recorder may include network connection means for connecting the recorder to a computer network so that the measurement may be transmitted to a remote location, and optionally, the recorder may be controlled from the remote location.
- the recorder may include an automatic shut off valve responsive to the activation of the pressure switch.
- Figure 1 shows a flow sheet showing how the recorder of the invention is connected to a medical gas supply and to a patient
- Figure 2 shows a circuit diagram of a PC-board used for the recorder of the invention.
- reference numeral 10 generally indicates a medical gas consumption recorder broadly in accordance with the invention.
- the recorder 10 includes a housing 12, in which housing is located a pressure switch 14, an LED display 16, and a reset button 18.
- An inlet 20 provides access for the gas to the pressure switch 14 within the housing 12.
- the pressure switch 14 is an MPL 500 available from Micropneumatic Logic Inc.
- the recorder 10 is connected downstream of a gas source 22, a regulator 24 and a rotameter type flowmeter 26.
- a pipe or hose 28 having a tee-piece 30 provides the gas to the patient 32 as well as directing gas to the pressure switch 14.
- the gas flow When the gas flow is activated, for example by actuating the regulator 24 or flowmeter 26, the gas pressure increases in the hose 28 and thus on the pressure switch 14 thereby activating the pressure switch 14 which in turn activates a measuring means 34 located within the housing 12 and any associated portion of the electronic circuit means 50 ( Figure 2) whereby the measured value is displayed on the LED display 16.
- the pressure switch deactivates the measuring means 34 and any associated portion of the electronic circuit means 50 thereby ceasing to increase the measured value which is being displayed on the LED 16.
- the measuring means 34 is a timer.
- the period of time for which a flow in pipe 28 is detected is directly related to the quantity of gas administered to the patient.
- a nurse records the reading on display 16 onto a modified medical chart and thus the total amount of gas administered to a patient is calculable over the period of treatment.
