Definitions
- Telescopic spring unit having a locking device.
- the present invention relates to a telescopic assembly
- a spring unit preferably a gas spring, arranged in a cylinder, a piston rod being connected at one end to said spring unit and having a free end projecting out of the cylinder at one end thereof, and a locking device having a first end connected to said free end and a second end slidably riding on said cylinder, said locking device having stop means positioned at least at or near its second end, said second end being positioned at or near said one end of the cylinder in an extended position of the assembly and force means urging said stop means against said one end of the cylinder.
- Gas springs are widely used to apply a force on a body, e.g. to open a hatch, a door or a window.
- a body e.g. to open a hatch, a door or a window.
- the hatch, door or window is in a fully open position, and the gas spring is fully extended, it may be desirable, or necessary, to engage a locking device to prevent accidential closing.
- a roof window which may be used as an exit for craftsmen or builders to gain access to the roof. Of safety reasons it is necessary that the roof window will stay in the open position, so the craftsmen will be able to return to the inside of the building.
- gas springs with locking devices for locking the piston rod in its fully ex- tended position is known in the art.
- One such gas spring manufactured by Arvin Control Motion has a plate spring acting on the inside of the locking device and arranged in a plug firmly connected to the free end of the piston rod and pivotably connected to the locking device.
- US Patent No. 4,596,383 discloses a telescopic assembly comprising a gas spring with a lock tube adapted to ride telescopingly over the gas spring.
- the gas spring is provided with an additional overex- tension spring means and the gas spring must be over- extended to engage the lock tube.
- Another additional spring may be provided between the lock tube and the piston rod near the outer end of the piston rod to urge the lock tube out of its coaxial position.
- JP-A-56-14636 discloses a telescopic assembly comprising a gas spring and a locking sleeve.
- the locking sleeve is urged out of alignment with the gas spring by an additional spring provided on the outer periphery of the cylinder to engage the locking sleeve in the fully extended position of the gas spring.
- US Patent No. 5,358,225 discloses a telescopic as- sembly comprising a locking unit.
- the piston rod is connected to the locking unit in a tilting joint so the locking unit is urged out of alignment when a compressive force is applied on the telescopic assembly.
- the locking unit In the fully extended state of the telescopic assembly the locking unit will pivot when a compressive force is applied on the assembly and making the locking unit abut the end of the spring cylinder.
- piston rod and locking unit must be provided with a tilting joint which will be require modification of the piston rod end and a joint between the piston rod and the locking unit that will withstand both compression and tension forces .
- the telescopic assembly according to the invention is characterized in that in that in that in that said force means comprises a plug pivotably connected to said free end of the piston rod and firmly connected to the locking device and a resilient element connected with the plug and acting on said piston rod.
- the locking device can thus relatively easily be mounted on a gas spring, and the assembly is inexpensive to manufacture.
- said stop means comprises an edge of said locking device at said second end, whereby a stop means is provided in a very simple way.
- several stop means are provided along the locking device starting from said second end.
- the plug and the resilient element is made in one piece, prefera- bly in plastics, which will make the assembly even more inexpensive and easy to assemble.
- Fig. 1 is a partly cut view of a gas spring with a locking device
- Fig. 2 a perspective enlarged view of a plug with a resilient element
- Fig. 3 an enlarged view of a locking device with several stop means .
- a telescopic assembly 1 comprising a gas spring 2 housed a cylinder 3.
- a piston rod 4 exits one end of the cylinder 3 and is con- nected to a piston (not shown) in the cylinder 3, which piston is acted on by a pressurized gas to urge the piston rod out of the cylinder 3 to a fully extended position of a free end 5 of the piston rod 4.
- a cylindrical sleeve 11 is arranged coaxially around the cylinder 3 to act as a locking device 6 in the fully extended position of the piston rod 4, as the locking device 6 has an edge 7 at distance from the free end 5 corresponding to a position at a fully exteded position of the assembly 1, and this edge 7 can abut on the end of the cylinder 3.
- the locking device 6 further has force means 8 to urge the edge 7 in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction of the assembly.
- the force means 8 comprises a plug 9 press fit into one end of the cylindrical sleeve 11 to obtain a firm connection and the plug 9 is again pivotably connected to the free end 5 of the piston rod 4.
- the plug 9 further comprises a resilient element 10 protruding from the plug 9 in direction of the cylinder 3 and acting on the piston rod 4 at a distance from the free end 5 to urge the plug 9 and therefore also the cylindrical sleeve 11 to have an angle with reference to the axial direction of the piston rod 4.
- the plug 9 and resilient element 10 is shown in enlarged in Fig.
- the plug 9 may further have a circular abutment 12, which the cylindrical sleeve abuts to ensure a firm connection and transfer of compression force from the cylindrical sleeve 11 to the connection at the free end 5 of the piston rod 4.
- the plug 9 may be formed of any suitable material, such as aluminium, but it is preferred to use a plastic material, e.g. POM, which will ensure a cheap and durable element for this specific purpose.
- a plastic material e.g. POM
- a means comprising a plug and an integrally formed resilient element, however a separate resilient element mounted in the plug may be used, e.g. to achieve a higher resiliency, although this may result in a rise in production cost.
- the locking device 6 may have several stop means. These stop means may comprise a) an edge 7 at the end of the locking device 6 and b) one or more additional indentations or the like along the length of the locking device 6, said indentations providing additional edges to engage with the end of the cylinder 3 during compression of the spring unit 2.
- the cylindrical sleeve 11 must be formed of a ma- terial having a substantial rigidity to withstand buckling when the locking device is engaged.
- a suitable material for most applications will be aluminium, but it the safety demands are less strict the cylindrical sleeve 11 may be made of a plastic mate- rial.
