Abstract

A network node including a control module and a plurality of resource modules is disclosed. Resources at the network node are managed using distributed software components. Management software resides at the resource modules, and preferably registers with a central agent at the control module that routes management requests to the individual resource modules. Management software may be distributed so that one resource module manages other modules. Legacy equipment may be managed by a management agent resident at another module. As well, resource modules may be managed by way of the central agent, or directly by way of ports on each resource module. Moreover, a second central agent on a redundant module may allow management at the node in the event an active central agent fails.
