Abstract
Dust-collecting bag (10) for an electric broom (70) whose base exhibits a flange (30) with a large central hole (32), a rubber lamina (50) in which is a hole (51) closed by an elastic tongue (55) so that on putting the bag (10) into the appliance (70), the end of the dust-discharging tube (73), on penetrating by force into the hole (51) in the rubber lamina (50), causes the tongue (55) to curve away freeing communication with the discharge tube (73) while, when the bag (10), full of dust, is removed, the tongue (55) spontaneously returns to the closing position preventing any escape of dust.
Description
Automatically closed dust bag for electric brooms and the like The invention concerns the devices used in vacuum cleaners and similar appliances for changing dust collection bags.
Collecting dust especially indoors is known to create problems as it involves both drawing in the dust by a suitable motor-driven fan and storing it in a bag, placed inside the appliance, to be removed and changed as soon as it is full
Changing a bag full of dust has its drawbacks as dust easily flies out and spreads through the environment during the operation. Sophisticated systems exist including a valve for automatically opening the bag when new and closing it when full but such systems are costly and complicated in use.
The cost exceeds any advantages obtained as vacuum cleaning appliances are widely adopted in homely as well as luxurious surroundings and therefore the cost both in time and money can, if excessive, raise obstacles to a more extensive use of bags. The above invention removes these problems, offering original technical solutions of both a practical and inexpensive nature to the great advantage of users everywhere.
Subject of the invention is a replaceable dust-collecting bag for vacuum cleaning appliances.
Said bag is closed at one end and has a rigid flange glued onto its base, covering substantially the whole of the bag's cross section, having in it a large central oblong hole whose position corresponds with that of a large hole in the bottom of the bag, said flange comprising an elastic lamina in which a hole is made of a diameter smaller than the external diameter of the end of the dust-discharging tube, substantially aligned with the other holes.
A substantially rectangular elastic tongue, fixed close to the edge of the hole in the elastic lamina and of a width greater than the diameter of said hole, extends beyond the opposite side of said hole in close contact with said elastic lamina.
Thickness of the flange is substantially constant and, projecting centrally from its sides, are two small rounded teeth intended to be elastically pressed inside corresponding holes made in the bottom of opposingly situated U-shaped channels, cut in a pair of arms, fixed to the inner wall of a door in the appliance, that stand out substantially at right angles from said wall.
Distance between said channels corresponds to the width of the flange on the bag, a width the same as the flange's thickness and, when the door of the appliance is closed, their position substantially corresponds to a geometrical plane passing through the end of the dust-discharging tube, symmetrical to both sides of said end.
Therefore, when the flange of an empty bag is fitted in between the two opposing channels, it is made stable by spontaneous penetration of its lateral teeth in the holes in said channels.
On closing the door of the appliance the end of the dust-discharge tube automatically penetrates inside the hole in the elastic lamina, whose edges adhere to said end, and at the same time causes the end of the elastic tongue to curve, closing the hole in the elastic lamina, inside the bag leaving free communication between bag and discharge tube.
When the full bag is taken out of the appliance for changing, the tongue, no longer pressed by the discharge tube, spontaneously resumes its closed positiion preventing dust from coming out.
Frontward the flange is curved to fit the inner curved wall of the door carrying the bag, while rearward it has a projection for easy finger grip. The flange is preferably formed by glued association of two pieces of stiff pressed cardboard, there being interposed between them the lamina of latex rubber and the tongue of elastic plastic material. The invention offers evident advantages:
The flange at one end of the bag, to match with the dust discharge tube when inside the appliance, acts as a real automatic valve that opens when the empty bag is put in and closes when the full bag is removed, preventing any dust from leaking out into the environment.
Being made from a series of thin superimposed layers, said flange is substantially flat and of minimum thickness so that it can be bent against the side of the empty bag to be of little or no bulk in transport and storage. Opening the bag from its practically flat storage position to its operative form with the flange substantially crosswise, is extremely simple.
The seal between bag and discharge tube is rendered automatic due to elasticity of the edge of the latex lamina, pressed on to surround and cover the end of said tube. The materials used, substantially paper and plastic, are of the cheapest kind.
It will be clear from the foregoing that the described bag is quickly and easily replaced at little cost and can be universally used. Characteristics and purposes of the invention will be made still clearer from the following example of its execution illustrated by diagrammatically drawn figures.
Fig.1 Perspective of the electric appliance, with half-open door, to which the dust bag adheres. Fig.2 Exploded perspective view of the dust bag. Fig.3 Perspective of the dust bag being put in, or taken out, through the door of the electric appliance.
Fig.4 Internal perspective of the bag mounted on the door when closed.
The dust bag 10 exhibits a body 1 1 of paper with one end 12 closed and a bottom 13, in which is a large central hole 14, associated by glueing to a stiff flange 30.
Said flange is composed of two thin layers 31 , 40 of cardboard between which is a latex lamina 50 and also a substantially rectangular tongue 55 of elastic plastic material.
The layers 31 and 40 and the latex lamina 50 are associated by glueing and press on the tongue 55 interposed between the layer 31 , matching with the bottom 13 of the bag, and the latex lamina. In both layers 31 and 40 are large oblong holes 32 while in the lamina 50 there is a round hole 51 placed substantially central to said oblong hole 32.
The rear end 56 of the tongue 55 is glued between the layer 31 and lamina 50 on one side of the round hole 51 in said lamina, said tongue extending beyond the other end of said hole and closing it completely, the width of said lamina being greater than the diameter of the hole. The diameter of the hole 51 is smaller than the external diameter of the end 73 of the discharge tube in the electric appliance 70. The flange 30 is substantially rectangular, its front end being shaped in an arc of a circle 33 to fit the curve of the inner wall 61 of the door 60 in the electric appliance 70.
Substantially central in each side of said flange 30 is a rounded tooth 34 and, rearward, a projection 35 to serve as a finger grip. Low down on the wall 61 of the door 60 to the electric appliance 70 are arms 62 in which are U-shaped channels 63 whose width corresponds to that of the flange 30, one channel opposite the other separated by a distance the same as the width of said flange.
Two holes 64 are cut in the base and almost at the end of said channels 63, the size of said holes being that of the lateral teeth 34 on the flange. To fit the dust bag into the electric broom 70, the door 60, attached to the upper end 71 of the window 72, is opened and the flange 30 of the bag put in between the two arms 62 until fixed by the teeth 34 inside the holes 64 that hold the bag firmly onto the door.
On closing the door of the electric broom 70, the end 73 of the discharge tube penetrates inside the hole 51 in the elastic lamina 50 and is held in place by the edges of said hole.
Said end 73 of the tube, on penetrating inside said hole 51 , causes the tongue 55 to curve 55' so that the tongue moves away to allow free passage of dust rising up through said tube.
When the bag is full of dust it is removed from the door by extracting the flange 30 and by this movement the tongue 55 automatically closes the hole in the latex lamina 50, as would an automatic valve.
