Abstract

A self contained towable power supply adapted for the tramming or flitting of electrically powered underground mining machines such as continuous miners, shuttle cars, breaker feeders, face shearers and similar electrically powered mining machines comprises an engine (11) and an alternator assembly (5) mounted upon a wheeled trailer (1). The wheeled trailer (1) comprises a rolled hollow section steel main frame (2), trailing suspension (3), with rubber springs (4) or hydraulic suspension and a tow bar (8A). The engine (11) and alternator (5) may be rigidly secured to a sub-frame assembly, which is resiliently mounted upon the trailer main frame (2). A protective roll bar type canopy (6) carrying water and fuel tanks (7), and a control assembly (8) may be bolted to the main frame (2). Alternatively the trailer may be skid mounted by omitting the wheeled sub-frame assembly. By providing mining equipment with a towable power supply, the problem of tramming with power cables is overcome.

Description

Self contained towable power supply for mining machines
This invention relates to mining equipment and more particularly provides an improved apparatus for the tramming or flitting of electrically powered underground mining machines such as continuous miners, shuttle cars, breaker feeders, face shearers and similar electrically powered mining machines.
Presently such machines are powered within the mine from fixed skid mounted substations through junction boxes (gate end boxes) and lengths of cable fixed to each machine. While this arrangement is satisfactory for their normal operation within limited areas it periodically becomes necessary to transport the machines over longer distances of up to 12 to 15 kilometers to enable maintenance or replacement. Typically this was a time consuming and laborious process which involved the installation of additional junction boxes (gate end or flitting boxes) at intervals of about 500 metres along the intended path of travel. The machine was then moved or "trammed" under its own power with the cable being proσressivel connected to each succeeding box. As the power cables however are of the order of 50 to 60 mm in diameter and may weigh several tonnes this operation required the employment of additional cable handling equipment and crew of several men.
It is therefore an object of this invention to ameliorate such disadvantages and accordingly this invention discloses a self contained towable power supply adapted for underground use in the flitting or tramming of electrically powered mining equipment over long distances. Such apparatus according to this invention may comprise a wheel or skid mounted diesel alternator set specifically adapted for underground operation which would preferably have the following overall dimensions: Length 4267 mm
Height 1371 to 1471 mm Width 1860 to 1500 mm In one form it may further consist of a towable trailer mounting an alternator set adapted to produce for example: 206 KVA at 1000 volts
206 KVA at 455 volts or 206 KVA at 1000/455 volts
One preferred embodiment of this invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of one form of wheel mounted alternator unit; Figure 2 shows a top view of the unit of Figure 1. The trailer is designed tobe towered behind the mining equipment being trammed and may be constructed from a 203 x 102 x 6.3 rolled liollow section steel main frame 2,trailing arm suspension 3, with aeon rubber springs 4 or alternative hydraulic suspension. The engine alternator assembly 5 in this case is rigidly secured to a subframe assembly which in turn is resiliently mounted to the main trailer frame 2.
A protective roll bar type canopy assembly 6 is also preferably fitted. This may be fabricated from 51/51/3.2 rolle hollow section steel, and boltedto the main frame. With this embodiment it may be used to carry water and fuel tanks 7, and the electrical control cabinet 3. All of these are also resiliently mounted on the frame. Wheel chocks on brackets, retained by chains may also be provided but are not shown in the drawings . The front of the main ;frame also carries a tow bar 8A of any suitable design so as to enable the trailer to be readily hitched to the above mentioned mining machines.
Soundproofing panels are preferably fitted to reduce noise levels to less than 95 dba. The tyre rims 9 may be in two parts with a solid 12 mm plate centre c/w triangular usset and fitted with suitable tyres 10 such as "12 PR Alliance steel reinforced roc tread" tyres. To resist corrosion all fabricated metal parts are preferably dressed and primed with' zinc rich primer and two coats of spraying enamel.
