IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR COMBING- .AND PREPARING- WOOL, 8cc.

Be it known that I, EDWARD HOLDEN, of Laurel Mount, Baildon, near Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invent-ed Improvements in Apparatus From the combs c it is conducted to the delive1yroll ers ff and apron g.
Motion is given to the various parts, according to' for Preparing \Vool or other Fibres; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being' ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereom ln preparing wool or other fibre bymechanical means, it has been customary to operate `upon suc-h fibre by passing it through series of separate apparatus, each apparatus being furnished with a singleset of bars of gill-combs. thus working, the whole accumulation upon the apron of one apparatus is, in a. mass, fed into the succeeding'one, whichI have found toghe objectionable; and the object of my invention is to operate moreedectively upon the fibre, and at the same time to reduce the number of operations upon it, by passing it through apparat-us arranged to effect a draught on such fibre between sets of gill-combs, and
' I employ drawing-rollers as the means of effecting such draught between the sets of screw-gill teeth.
The gill-teeth, receiving the fibre from such drawingmeans, will, as occasion requires, be speeded to effect draught. A
Drawing-rollers are also applied to receive the fibre from theilast of the gill-teeth, and in passing from these last drawing-rollers, the libre may be received on to an apron, or into cans, as desired. Aprons are used with the drawing-rollers.
But that the invent-ion may be better understood, I will, by the aid of the accompanying drawing, proceed to describe means pursued by me in carrying the saine into effect.
Description of the Drawings.
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section, Figure 2, a side view, and Figure 3, a plan view of appara-tus, arranged to carry out my improvements.
The tibre carried forward by these combs c is thence taken between the drawing-rollers d d, and by the increased speed of these rollers, as compared with that of the combs c, it is drawn or straightened. Upon this axis B is also affixedA the pulley C, which, by a strap or baud, C', gives motion to the pulley I) aitixed on the shaft or axis D', which is also supported to revolve in suitable bearings carried by the main framing A. v
Upon the shaft or axis Bis also atxed the toothed wheel E, the teeth of which take into the teeth of the wheel F afxed to the shaft F1, which is supported freely to revolve in bearings carried by the main framing, and upon this shaft l1 are aiixed the bevellcd pinions Fz and the pinion G.
The teeth of .the bevellcd pinions F2 take into the teeth of the bevelled pinions F3 attixed on the lower of the screw-shafts F4, for giving motion to the gill-bars c, while they are in the lower tier.
Upon these lower screw-shafts F* are also affixed pinions F5, the teeth of which, in the ordinary inarrner, take into the teeth of pinions F6 atixed on the upper of the screw-shafts.
F7 and E" are guides to guide the gill-bars e in their respective motions from the upper to the lower t-ier, and from the lower to the upper tier.
The teeth ofthe wheel G take into the teeth of the intermediate wheel G1, the teeth of which take into the teeth of the wheel G2, atixed on the axis f l of the lower roller f, s o as to give the desired motion to that roller.
Upon the axis fl is also aftixed'the pinion G3, the teeth of which take into the teeth of another pinion, G4, aiiixed on the axis of the roller G5, serving, in part, to support and give motion to the upper belt or apron G.
g1 g2 are'other supporting-rollers to the belts g and G6, supported in bearings capable of adjustment by means of the screws g3 g4, as shown.
The pressure exerted by the upper of the rollers j' is regulated by means ofthe springs f1 and adjustingscrews f.
Upon the shaft or axis D1 is also aiiixed the' pinion D2, which, by means of the intermediate pinion D",
gives motion to the wheel'D affixed on the'shaft or axis D5, upon which are aiXe-d the bevelled pinions 'DG D, the teeth ot' which take into the teeth of the bevelled pinions D7 aiiixed on the lower of the screwshafts D, for giving motion to the gill-bars 0while they are in the lower tier.
Upon the shafts D are afxed the pinions D", the teeth of which take into the teeth of pinions aixed on the upper screw-shafts D10, for giving the requisite motion to the bars c, while they are in the upper tier.
D and D12 are guides to the gill-bars c, in their movement to and from the respective tiers.
Upon the shaft or axis I)5 are also affixed the pinions H and I.
The teeth of the pinion H take into the teeth of a pinion, H1, which, with a bevelled pinion7 H2, aiiixed thereto together, are capable of turning on a fixed stud, H.
lhe teeth of the bevelled pinion H2 take into the teeth of the bevelled pinion H4 afxed on the shaft H5,
which is supported to revolve in adjustable bearings H, and has formed on ,it the Worm H7, which receives the teeth of the screw-wheel H8 afxed on the axis b of the lower roller b, and gives the requisite motion to those'rollers b. Upon the axis b is also affixed the pinion J, which, by means of the intermediate pinion J1, gives motion to the pinion J2 on the axis of one of the supportingrollers al of the feed-apron a..
The pinion I, by means of the intermediate Wheels 11 12, gives motion to the pinion I aixed on the axis d1 of the lower roller d, to give motion to that roller.. The pressure of the upper roller Z is regulated by springs cl2 and screws d, acting on its bearings.

Having thus described my invention, and Ameans which I adopt in carrying the same into effect, I- would have it understood that That I claim, is-
The combination, with two sets of screw-gillcombs c e, of the set of' intermediate' drawing-rollers d1 dl, the whole arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
