Specification of Letters Patent.
SASH-LOCK.
Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Application filed April 19, 1910. Serial No. 556,355.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDEMGK L. VISS- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash locks. Its object is to provide a simple, cheap, practical lock or fastener, which can bc easily applied to prevent the unauthorized opening of a window, by which device theopening 1novement of a window may be limited; also whereby two sashes may be locked together at. a suitable point, so 'tl'at both may move in unison in case it is desired to 'leave a slight opening for ventilation at either top or bottom of the window, or both to) and bottom. It has other objects and advantages which will be apparent hereinafter.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows the application of the in vention. Fig. 2 is a detail in section of the lock. F ig. 3 is a front edge view in section,
A and B represent the two sashes of an ordinary window, to which the invention is applicable.
2 is a box or casing substantially of a quadrant form adapted to be suitably secured to one of the sashes, as A, and having in it a curved way for the reception and guidance of a segmental latch bolt 3. This latch bolt 8 is concentric with the guide-way in casing 2 and is reciprocated therein by suitable means, as the handle or knob 4 carried by the bolt and working in a slot 5 on one side of the casing. As here shown, the back wall of the casing is contiguous to and parallel with a rail of sash B, which rail is provided with one or more boxes or keepers 6 arranged in the path of and engageable by bolt 3 when the latter is thrown outward in locking position, as shown in Fig. 2.
7 is a locking block or follower adapted to cooperate with the locking bolt 3 and prevent the retraction of the same when engaged with the keeper 6. This follower block 7 is ordinarily housed in a recess S within the casing 2 and adapted, when the bolt 3 is thrown forward, automatically to be projected into the space thus vacated by the bolt, by suitable means, as the spring 9.
In operation the casing is fastened to the upper edge of the lower sash and the keepers G secured to the other sash in the plane of the end of the bolt 3. To lock the sashes against relative movement the bolt 3 is pushed forward by the handle 4 to engage with a keeper G, the follower block 7 springing in beneath the bolt and preventing the retraction of the same until the key, as l0, inserted in the casing to withdraw block 7 out of the path of the bolt The latch bolt can then be pulled back and when pressure is released on the key, spring 9 will act to press the follower block against: the inside of the bolt The next time the bolt 3 is pushed out the follower block will spring in behind the bolt in the manner just described.
The segmental bolt is supported by the automatic space-block, which prevents any possibility of the bolt being` picked after being locked.
rI`he lock is simple, neat. and compact. It can not be pried open when engaged with the keepers, on account of the long` curved bearing surface that the box has against the top of the curved bolt. The lock being provided with an individual, block-operating key, can not be opened from the inside without the proper key.
The lock may be applied at either side of the sash and also may be fastened to the center of the rail. By placing numerous sockets along the vertical sides of the sash, the window may be set and locked in open position and at different positions.
In order to prevent the retraction of the locking block 7, accidentally, or except by a special key provided for the purpose, I provide this block 7 with a reversible sliding dog or tumbler ll which is adapted when the block 7 is in forward locking position, to drop into a notch l2 in the bottom of the casing A. To retract the block 7 and allow the bolt 3 to bc retracted so as to unlock the window, the key must first be inserted in the keyhole 13 and then turned a quarter turn to lift up an arm 11i of the tumbler ll to raise the tumbler out of the notch l2, then push the key back or inwardly toward the other sash to compress the spring 9. .The block 7$is perforated from top to bottom and open at one side so as to allow the tumbler ll to be reversed to adapt the block and sash lock to either side of a window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of ,a box or casing having,` a curved guideway and a recess in the base at substantially right angles to the said guideway and connecting` at one end therewith, the inner wall of the guideway extending past and forming` an end wall of said recess; a curved bolt operable in said guideway and having one end to extend across said recess and seat against the bottom thereof, and a spring-pressed follower block Operable in said recess and adapted to move forward under the end of the bolt, when the bolt is moved to withdraw its end ont of the said recess.
2. In. a sash lock, the combination of a casing having gnideway and a recess lead ing from one end thereof, a bolt operating in the guideway and a follower block operating` in the recess and adapted to move automatically and shoot forward under the end of the bolt when said bolt is raised to un" cover the end of the follower block, and a tumbler member carried by the follower block and engageable with the casing to limit the movement of said block.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing` witnesses.
FREDERICK L. VISSMAN.
