CUTTER-HEAD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIK KRISTIAN SONDERGARD, a subject of the King of Denmark, of Westholme, British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cutter heads, particularly with relation to supporting devices for attachment to and to project radially from a cutter head and carry cutter knives or bits at their outer ends so as to cause such knives or bits to be disposed farther from the center of the cutter head than they would be if attached directly to the cutter head, whereby the knives or bits are spaced from the cutter head and caused to lie approximately parallel to their plane of movement with the result that they operate on the work at a slighter angle to the grain of the work than would be the case if they were attached directly to the sides of the cutter head.
My invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of a cutter head provided with bits and bit supports constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the bits or knives.
The cutter head 1 is rectangular in form, of the usual construction, and is provided in its longitudinal side 'with longitudinal grooves 2 which have overhanging side flanges 3.
It is the object of my invention to provide supports which while connecting the bits and knives to the cutter head serve to space them therefrom and materially increase the distance between them and the center of the cutter head so that the width of the angle between the knives and the plane of the work is materially reduced and Specification of Letters Patent.

said knives are caused to lie substantially parallel to the plane of revolution of the cutter head.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a pair or other suitable number of sup ports 4: to extend radially from the cutter head at the corners or angles between the longitudinal sides thereof. Each of said supports has at its base a pair of feet 5 which are arranged obliquely with reference to the support and at right angles to each other and bear upon two contiguous longitudinal sides of the cutter head and are provided with slots 6. The bolts 7 which secure the said supports to the cutter head extend through said slots, the heads 8 of said bolts resting in the grooves 2 and the nuts 9 bearing on the outer side of said feet. The knives, bits or cutters l0 bear on the outer ends of said supports 4 and are provided with slots 11 to receive the bolts 12 which are employed to adjustably secure said cutters on said supports. The cutters here shown are of the shape employed for making the troughs or channels in Wooden gutters. The said knives or cutters may be of any other suitable shape and may be of any suitable size, as will be understood, according to the nature of the work.
What I claim is In combination with a cutter head of po lygonal from, a support projecting radially therefrom at a corner or angle between two contiguous longitudinal sides thereof, the said support having diverging feet at its inner end, the inner faces of which are flat and bear on and are secured to said contiguous sides of the cutter head, and a bit adjustably secured to the outer end of said support and spaced thereby from the cutter hea p In testimony whereof I have set my hand this 14th day of September A. D. 1908, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
FREDERIK KRI STIAN SON DERGARD.
