GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed June 25, 1910. Serial No. 568,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLF BELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Gas-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
The burner which is the subject of the present invention is designed more particularly for use in connection with water heaters, and it is the object of the invention to provide a burner which is so constructed that all danger of flashing back of the flame is eliminated, and also to provide means for adjusting the direction in which the flame is projected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of burner cap.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a front elevation of the burner, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be seen that the body of the burner is a cup-shaped structure comprising a bottom 5, and a cylindrical wall 6 rising therefrom. Opening into the interior of the burner body, through the bottom thereof, is a tube 7, said tube being the gas supply tube, it being connected to a suitable source of supply. The tube 7 is formed integral with the burner body, and the latter extends at an acute angle to the tube, the arrangement being similar to that shown and described in my former Patent No. 899,003, dated September 15, 1908, and for the same purpose fully set forth in said patent.
In the burner body is mounted a frustoconical burner cap 8 which is open at the bottom, and seats on the bottom 5 of the burner body. The top of the burner cap is closed at its center, and in said top, as well as in the side of the cap, are slits 9 which constitute gas outlets. By reason of the conical shape of the burner cap, the slitted side thereof is. spaced from the cylindrical wall 6 of the burner body, whereby the gas is permitted to escape from the slit-s.
The top of the burner body is closed by a disk 10 having a series of arcuate gas outlet openings 11 near its edge. These openings do not extend entirely around the disk, so that by rotating the same, the direction in which the flame is projected may be varied. It is therefore possible to adjust the flame so that it will be projected in the desired direction.
From the bottom 5 of the burner body rises a post 12 having at its upper end a reduced portion which extends into a central opening in the top of the burner cap 8, said reduced portion forming a shoulder which is engaged by the under side of the top of the burner cap. The central portion of the top of the burner cap through which the aforesaid opening is made, is thickened so that it will not be weakened by said openlng.
The disk 10 has a central opening through which a screw 18. passes, said screw also passing into a threaded opening, made in the upper end of the post 12, whereby the disk and the burner cap are securely held in place. The disk is formed with a central depressed portion 14 whereby its remaining portion is slightly spaced from the slitted portion of the top of the burner cap.
The base of the burner cap seats closely against the bottom 5 of the burner body, and
is securely held in this position by the herein described fastening means, whereby flashing back of the flame is effectually prevented.
The burner cap will be formed of soapstone, which substance, besides its refractory property, also prevents the formation of carbon and other deposits in the slits.
What is claimed is:
1. A gas burner comprising a body having a gas inlet, a burner cap in the body into which the inlet opens, said cap having gas outlets, and a cover on the body having an outlet, said cover being adjustable to vary the position of its outlet.
2. A. gas burner comprising a cylindrical body having a bottom gas inlet, a frustoconical burner cap seating in the body on the bottom thereof over the gas inlet, the base of the burner cap being open, and the top thereof being partially closed, and said burner cap having gas outlets in its side and top, the side of the cap being spaced from the side Wall of the burner body, and a In testimony that I claim the foregoing as cover located on the top of the burner body, my own, I have hereto affixed my signature said cover being spaced from the gas outlets in the presence of two witnesses.
in the top of the burner cap, and having an ADOLF BELER. outlet, and said cover being adjustable on WVitnesses:
the burner body to vary the position of its FRANK B. OGHSENREITER,
outlet. 7 7 E. G. SOHLADT.
