To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, county of Suiiolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Toys, of which the following description, 111 connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a toy and has for its object to provide a novel and amusing toy by means of which two boxers may be represented in action.

To this end, the toy is composed of two members or figures having the outlines of two boxers arranged face to face, said members being mounted upon supports, which are normally held apart by a spring, which is adapted to be operated by the hand so as to move the boxers toward and from each other and bring the arms of. the same into play or action. Provision is made to limit the movement of the boxers away from each other and also to limit the movement of the arms as will be described.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a toy embodying this invention and showing the same at rest. Fig. 2 is a like elevation showing the boxers in action, and Fig. 3, a detail to be referred to.

Referring to the drawing, a, b, are two members of the toy, representing two boxers, each of said members having the general outline of a man with one leg 0 advanced in front of the other leg (Z and bent to approximate the position assumed by two persons engaged in a boxing bout. The members a, b, are operatively connectedtogether by a spring 10, preferably of sheet metal, which is bent into the form of a U and has its free ends suitably fastened to pieces 12, 13, of wood or other suitable material, which constitute supports for the members a, Z), which have the feet of the legs 0 glued or otherwise fastened to the upper end of said supports.

The members a, Z), are preferably made of wood or like material and the supports 12, 13, may be provided at their upper ends with transverse slots 15 into which lugs or projections 16 on the sole of the feet of the legs 0 are extended and secured therein by glue or otherwise. The U-shaped spring 10 normally tends to move the members a, Z), away from each other, and this movement may be limited as hereinshown (see Fig. 1)

by a cord or other flexible device 18 whose ends may be laid in the slots 15 and secured to the supports 12, 13 by the glue.

The members a, b, are moved toward each other by contracting the spring 10, that is by moving the free ends of the spring toward each other, which may be effected by one hand of the child or other operator.

In operation, the toy is held between the fingers and thumb of one hand, by engaging the supports 12, 13, or the spring itself, and by a rapid movement of the thumb and fingers of the hand toward and away from each other, the members a, b, are rapidly moved toward and away from each other, which movements set the arms 20 of the members a, b, in motion so as to resemble the action of two boxers engaged in a bout. The arms 20 on each member are pivoted at 21 at the shoulder and bent at the elbow and 1 the ends are enlarged as at 22 to represent boxing gloves. In order that the arms may more nearly approximate the motion of the arms of living boxers, each member is provided with a stop or projection 28 located above the shoulder pivot so as to prevent the arms making a complete revolution and causing them to have an extreme movement of substantially half of a circle forward and backward.

The parts of the toy except the spring 10 may be made of wood, papier-mach or like light material.

Claims.

1. A toy comprising two members having the outline of men with one leg advanced, and provided with pivoted arms, said members being arranged in line with each other, supports to which the advanced legs of said members are secured, a substantially U- shaped spring having its free ends secured to said supports, and a flexible device connecting said supports to limit the expanding movement of said spring.

2. A toy comprising two members normally separated from each other and bodily movable toward each other, said. members having the outline of men and each provided with arms bent at the elbow and pivoted at. the shoulder to turn with the shoulder pivot as a center, a spring operatively connected with said members, and a stop to limit the rotary movement of said arms, substantially as described.

3. A toy comprising two members having the outline of men and provided with pivoted arms, supports for said members movable toward and from each other, and a spring connected with said supports to eiiect movement of the same away from each other.

A toy comprising two members having the outline of men and arranged facing each other, said members having rigid arms bent at the elbow and pivoted at the shoulder, the arm of one member being disconnected from the arms of the other member and a bent spring having its free ends operatively connected with said members, substantially as described.
