Letters Patent No. 97,557,1Za'ted December 7, 1869.
The Schedule referred to-.zln these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ABRAHAM SHENFIELD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented. an Improvement in Combined Shoulder-Braces and Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a frh-clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, `in which- Figure l is a rear view of my improved shoulderbrace and Suspenders, showing them as attached to the wearer.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
,l Figure 3 is a detail view, showing the manner in which the rear button-straps are connected 'with the back attaching-straps. l
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved combined shoulder-brace and Suspenders, which shall be so constructed and arranged as to fully support the clothing all around the body, so that there may be no sagging or drawing, and which shall be perfectly easy to the wearer, allowing a free and `full use of the muscles, at the same time that theytend to draw the shoulders back, rendering them especiallyV adapted to velocipedists, book-keepers, Ste.; and
It consists in the arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described. y
Vln referring to the dra\vings,.similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A are the shoulder-straps, the forward ends of which are .connected with the'metallic loops B, to which the front buttonlstraps are connected, said connection being strengthened with leathers if' desired.
The front part of the shoulder-straps A may be provided with slides in the ordinary manner to lengthen or shorten them as desired. I
The rear ends of the straps A are attached to the same metallic loop C, to which the rear button-straps are attached, as shown in figs. l and 3.
The attachment of the. straps A to the loops C may be strengthened with leather, as shown in figs. 1 and 3.
D is the brace or body-strap, the forward ends of which are attached to the same metallic loops B with the forward ends of the strap A, or may be connected with the forward ends ofthe shoulder-straps A, as shown in fig. 1.
-lhe st-rapD passes around the back of the wearer, and is attached to the rear parts of the straps A, just above the loops C, as shown in g. 1.- ,y -f
E are the button-hole straps, whichare each made in two parts.
In one edof each part is formed a button-hole. The other ends of each part are passed through the metallic loopsB and C, and are sewed, to the under side of the other parts a little above the button-hole.
rI his allows the button-straps to work freely, to adjust themselves to the various positioiis of the wearer. F is a short strap, the ends of which are securely connected with. the shoulder-straps A, and which is placed a little above and parallel with the rear part of strap D, as shown in fig. 1, for the purpose of conncct' i ing the said straps A upon the back of the wearer, supporting the strain and keeping the said straps A in place during the various movements of the body of the wearer, and at the same time causing the straps to act more irmly and satisfactorily as a'shouldcr-brace,
holding the shoulders back with an easy and natural pressure.
It will be observed that the point at which the forwardV ends of the straps A and'D meet, is arranged to be directly beneath the shoulder-joint, as 'shown' in tig. 2, so as to act as shoulder-braces at the same time that they are in proper position to easily and fully support the clothing, thus rendering it impossible for the braces ever to hurt the arm, and remedying a strong objection to braces as heretofore made.
I do not claim a brace or suspender in which the strap lpassing o ver the shoulder is connect-ed to the strap at the back.
1n my device, the straps A A are connected by' the strap D, and form a yoke sitting upon the back and over the shoulders in an easy manner, and without liability to change its position; and the double butltoning-straps E E E being applied at the back and the `two sides of the person, slide freely through their respective loops by which they are connected to the yoke, and yield to the movement -oi' the body in a manner that is very comfortable to the wearer.
I claim, asmy invention- "lhe yoke formed of the 'straps A, A, and D, united at B C, and arranged as specified, in combination with the double buttoning-straps E applied at the sides and back so as to slide through the respective loops by which said straps E are connected to the said yoke, for the purposes and as speciied.
The above specification of myinvention signed by me, .this 23d day of April, 1869.
, ABRAHAM SHENFIELD.
