SHERIDAN. WYOMING.
CAN-OPENER.
Speculation of Lettera Patent.
Patented July 5, 1910.
Application tiled liay 18, 1909. Bex-iat No. 496.82?.
To all when4 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ilsxln' Fencusox, a. citizen of the lfnited States of America, residing at Sheridan, in the county of Sheridan and I*tate of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Van-Openers. otl which the following is a specilication.
This in\cntion relates to can openers and has` for its object the provision ot' a tool of this character constrtwtediin such nninner that. it may he very econoniieall manufaiv lured and will etlioiently lseme t ie purposes i'or which it is designed.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be Set forth in the detailed description which now follows. ln the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is. a perspective view of a. bottle and eau opener embodying the invention, and, Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, illustrating the manner of application of the device.
Like numerals designate corres )ending parts in both of the igures of the rawing,
By referring to the drawin r, it will be seen that the im n'oved can and liottle opener ject mutter of the present invention comprises a. shank which is formed by hendin'er a preferably steel strip upon itself to prmide the parallel nu-iulu-rs (i and T, which ure held together by ri\t.ts li, .\t the rear end of the shank the material thereof is spread or bowed to forni an open handle tl. corkscrew l() is pivoted upon one. of the rivets between the xnelulxers t3 and i', and when not in use lies within'thc handle J where it is out ol' the way and is not likely t" injure the hands ol' the user. .t cutter l2, which comprises two suhstuntially parallel portions lill and lll, and the connecting portion l5, is slidahly mounted upon the shank 5, hoth of the members ti and T )assiiuf throu rh said cutter. A centering' lmrh lt) cxteinl's transversely from the from portion of the shank and a `econd cutter lil-.idc li' .which terminates in a lid lit`tin \r niemlier lb is secured lit-tween the shank incinta-rs t'- and 'i b v one ol' the rivets. S. y
'l`he extreme front ends of the shank inem hersare bent transversely as shown at ttt and titl :o `iw :tdditional rigidity to thc structuriand a bearingI surface for the front end of the shank when the cutter blade 17 is being used in the ordinary manner to. open square cans, or to open round cans, the material of which is so hcavv as torender thel use of the blade I4 inadrisablc. )rdinaril however. in opening round curls, the bar lt' is forced into the top of the can at. the center thereof, after which the blade 14 is caused to pierce the top of the can near the edge, the slidahle mounting of this blade adapting it for use upon cans of varyin dialneters. lt. will be apparent thatl a ter this blade 14 has been forced into the top of the can, the top of the can may be eut ont by swinging the shank upon the center alfolded hy the barb 16. When it. is desired Ito remore a cork or stopper from a bottle, that result is readily accomplished by swingin" the corkscrew 1G upon its pivot. until sait corkscrew lies substantially at. right angles to the shank. after which the corkscrew ma be used in the ordinary manner. 'lhe bar) 16 is also useful for removing the usual pa )er caps used as closures for milk bottles.
"rom the foregoing description it will he seen thatI simple and etlieicnt means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention. but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapt ed to :serve the purposes for which they :Irc intended. it is to he understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth. but includes within its purview such changes as may he made within the scope ot` the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
ln a device ot the character described, the combination with a shank'formed of a single strip of sheet metal lient upon itself to form two parallel portions, the free ends of which lie In the saine plane and are oppositelr out-turned. the material at the opposite cuil of the shank heilig outwardly howed to form an opcn handle, the. two portions of the shank l,\iu,\ r close together, face to face, throughout the major portion of their length. of a cutter bent into U-shape, one of the legs thereof being extended licyonllthe other and having r a cutting edge, the legs of said cutter having openings formed therethrough whcreb said cutter is slidabiy In ,testimony whereufl' niiix my signature mounted upon tie shank in front of said ln presence of two witnesses. bundle und n barb extending outwardly from tine shank near the'front end thereof HENR FERGUSOA 5 and in the sume direction as the cutting por- Witnesses:
