STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Application filed June 11, 1910. Serial No. 566,423.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KoNsTANrI- NIDES, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to stools and has for its object to provide a stool which is particularly adapted for use in connection with the counters for soda-fountains, department stores, lunch counters and for any other purposes wherein it is found applicable, and the primary object thereof is to provide a stool in a manner as hereinafter set forth which can be conveniently raised or lowered to increase or decrease the height of the stool and when so adjusted secured in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stool in a manner as hereinafter set forth which can be made a fixture u on the floor of a store or provided with eet for firmly supporting the same so as to permit of the stool being moved from point to point when desired.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a stool which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, provided with an adjustable foot rest, conveniently adjusted, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more speci 'cally described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. I
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stool constructed in ac cordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a plan of a detached foot ring.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a circular base having a centrally disposed tubular pedestal 2 communlcatin with a vertical'opening 3 formedin said base, and this opening communicates with an annular recess 4 in the bottom of the base. The base 1 is provided with a peripheral flange 5 having a plurality of spaced vertical openings 6 whereby the base can be secured to a floor by screws, nails or similar fastening means. The openings 6 of the flange 5 also permit of the base being connected to a foot ring 7 having radially disposed feet 8, said ring being connected to the base when it is desired to move the stool about.
9 designates a tubular standard telescoping the pedestal 2. This standard adjacent to the lower end thereof is provided with peripheral ribs 10 forming a guideway for a two-part band 11 having oppositely-disposed foot rests l2 and 13. The parts of the band 11 are connected together by screws 14; and to fixthe band relative to the standard 9. The foot rest 13 is provided with an opening 15 and locked in said openin is a set screw 16 having a bearing head 1 for frictionally engaging the standard 9 and holding the band in an adjusted position.
18 designates a plurality of circumferen tially arranged grooves formed in the inner side of the standard 9, each of said grooves having the lower wall beveled as at 19. Adapted to engage in said grooves are the beveled teeth 20 of locking arms 21 and 21*, located in the pedestal 2, the latter being provided with diametrically opposed openings 22 for the teeth 20. he arms extend downwardly through the opening 8 of the base 1 and are provided with right angular extensions 23 within the recess 4E. The ex tensions 23 are pivotally connected as at 24, to depending lugs 25 carried by the base 1 within the recess 4. The outer ends of the extensions 23 are provided with sockets 26 for the lower ends of coil springs 27 housed within the base 1. The extension 23 of the arm 21 has attached thereto the angular end 28 of a lever 28 which is pivoted intermediate its ends upon a pin 28 arranged within the recess 4 in the bottom of the base 1. The lever 28 is pivotally connected as at 28 to the lower end of a link 28 which is loosely connected as at 29 to the locking arm 21. The link and lever connection between the arms 21 and 21 is provided to cause the simultaneous shifting of the arms '21 and 21 from looking position when the.

In the opening 82 is detachablymounted a plug 33 for a rod 34, said rod having the inner end thereof provided with a. tooth 35 for engaging in a notch 36. formed in the arm 21. The outer end ofthe rod 3 1- is, provided with, a button or tread: 37,. and encircling said rod between the plug 33 and the tooth- 35 thereof'isa coil spring 38 adapted to normally hold the tooth of said rod out of en gagement with thearm 21.
39 designates a cylindrical socket carried by the upper end of the standard 9, and movably mounted in said socket is a depend-- ing post 10: of a seat frame 451. The lower end of the post 40; is provided: with a recess 42 to receive a, coilspring 13. mounted in the socket 89 for normally supporting the seat frame ll in an elevated position. To limit the movement of the post 450 within the socket 39, said socket is provided with detachable plugs 44 for set screwss5 which extend into an. annular groove 46 formed in the periphery of the post 40". To. lubricate the post 10: and insure anon-frictional movement of said: post relative to the socket 39, the latter is provided with packing grooves 47 for a conventional form of packing (not shown). The lower end of the standard 9 is provided with a similar groove 18.
49 designates a circular seat secured to the frame 41:, said seat having a. central re cess 59' for a transparent plate 51. In the recess 50 can be placed a piece of paper or plate 52 containing directions for operating or manipulating the stool, these directions being observed through the transparent plate 51.
53 designates a seat rim connected to the seat 19, as at 545, said rim being provided with a circumferentially arranged groove 55 and that portion of the ring forming the back of said grooveis serrated or roughened, whereby matches inserted in the groove can be easily struck, it being practically impos sible to strikematches upon the curved outer surface of the seat rim, the groove will be naturally selected for such purposes, thus preventing the seat rim from beingmarred or injured by matches.

This operation shifts the arm 21 upon its pivot 2a and at the same time forces the link 28 outwardly so as to shift the lever 28 upon its pivot 28. which causes the angular end 23 of the arm 21 to. rock on its pivot and shift the arm 21 inwardly. When the arm 21 is shifted inwardly by the treadle or button 37 and the arm 21 inwardly, due to the action of the link 28 and lever 28, the teeth 20 are moved from engagement in the grooves 18 and the standard 9 can then be lowered. When pressure is relieved upon the button or treadle 37 the arms 21 and 21 are restored to locking position due to the action of the springs 27.
What I claim is:
1. A stool comprising a base, a tubular pedestal carried thereby and provided with a pair of openings, a shiftable standard mounted upon said pedestal and having its inner face provided with a series of annular grooves arranged one above the other and each having its lower wall beveled, a pair of spring-pressed andoppositely-disposed arms arranged within the pedestal and base and each having a laterally-extending tooth adapted to project through an openingand engaging ina groove to arrest the downward movement of the standard, a seat sup ported by the standard, a link and lever connection between said arms whereby the arms can be simultaneously shifted tomove the teeth out of the grooves to release the standard, and means for shifting one arm whereby both of the arms will be shifted.
2. A stool comprising a base, atubular pedestal carried thereby and provided witha pair of openings, a shift-able standard mounted upon the pedestal and having its inner face provided with a plurality of angular grooves one arranged above the other, a seat supported by the standard, a pair of spring-pressed and oppositely-disposed arms arranged within the pedestal and each having a laterally-extending tooth adapted to project through an opening and engage in a shifted to released position, and means for shifting one of the arms to released position. 10
