Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWARD A. SCHNEIDER and CHARLES W. GossoM, citizens of the United States, residing at Custer city, in the county of Custer and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mail-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in coin handlers for mail boxes and has for its object to provide a simple device of this character inclosed in a mail box for holding postage money, and the primary object of the same is to hold the coin and to enable rural free delivery carriers to get money out of the mail boxes easily.

Another object of the device of this char acter is to provide a coin handler for rural free delivery mail boxes wherein a weighted portion is carried by the rear end which holds the coin receptacle in a tilted position for preventing the contents thereof from falling to the bottom of the mail box.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable and eflicient in practice and one which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View taken through the mail box and having the coin holder applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the coin holder.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a rural free delivery mail box provided with a hinged door 2 carrying a member 3 adapted to engage under the spring catch 4 secured to the top of the box 1, adjacent the door. Secured in the box to the top thereof by means of hangers 5 is a coin handler or tray which comprises a bottom 9, sides 6 and end 6 Rising vertically from and forming integral parts thereof are a pair of perforated ears 7 for the reception of a pin 8 which extends through the ends of the hangers and through the apertured ears for pivotally securing the coin handler to the hangers. Formed on the under face of'the bottom 9 of the coin handler 6 is a weight 10 disposed at the rear end thereof and adapted to hold said coin handler in a tilted position for preventing the coin from falling to the bottom of the mail box 1. The handler is pivotally disposed to the top of the mail box adjacent the door 2.

The operation of the device is as follows: The door 2 is opened by the carrier and he slides his fingers under the bottom of the coin handler and by the said handler being pivotally connected to the box 1, the device will tilt and necessitate the coin to slide out of the front portion 11 of the coin handler 6 into the carriers hand.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while we have described the principal operation of the invention together with the device which we now desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new, is:

The combination with a mail box, of a pair of hangers secured inside thereof, a coin tray comprising a bottom, sides, and an end, perforated ears forming integral parts of and rising vertically from the sides, a pin passing through the hangers and perforated ears, and a weight secured to the bottom of the tray and depending therefrom, the weight being disposed directly beneath the end of the tray.
