ELASTIC GRIP-BAND FOR PACKAGES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TILLIAM LIDDY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Grip-Bands for Packages, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to elastic bands for forming or securing packages of books and other articles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be lengthened or shortened when ever desired, and which may be conveniently secured, and which may be employed for a variety of purposes.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;

Figure 1 is a view showing one use of my improved elastic grip band in forming a bundle or package of books; Fig. 2 a side view of the band detached; Fig. a View similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification; and, Fig. 4 a side view of a link, a number of which are used in the formation of my improved grip band.

In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, I provide a package or grip band of the class described, comprising a plurality of rubber links a connected by oblong metal links 6 which are preferably rectangular in form, and the links I) are provided, in one side thereof, with an opening 1) the dimensions of which are much less than the transverse dimensions of the rubber links a.

In order to connect the rubber links a with the links I), the said rubber links are stretched almost to the limit and one side thereof is passed through the openings Z) in one side of the links 6 and this forms a complete band as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The rubber link a at one end of the band is provided with a hook c which is adapted to engage the link (1 at the other end of the band, as clearly shown in Fig 1, and in this Way, I provide an elastic grip band which Specification of Letters Patent.

may be conveniently used in securing a number of books together as shown at c in Fig. 1, or which may be used as a secu ring device for packages of any kind or class.

It will be understood that the rubber link members a may be of any desired length, and any desired strength and under ordinary conditions, or in use, they cannot be detached from the links Z), and the only way they can be detached from said links is to pull them out through the openings 1) therein.

In Fig. 2, I have shown a package or grip band employing four of the rubber links a, and in Fig. 3 a package or grip band showing only three of said rubber links, but it will be understood that any desired number of the rubber links a and a corresponding number of the links I) may be employed.

In securing together a number of books, as shown in Fig. 1, a short and very strong grip band is employed and this band is stretched around the books and the ends thereof connected as shown in said -ligure, but it will be understood that a longer and weaker band may be employed, and said band may be passed around the books a number of times if desired.

My improved grip band may also be used for holding up skirts, in which operation, it is secured around the waist and the top portion of the skirt drawn up thereunder at different points, and many other uses will readily suggest this.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An elastic grip band comprising a plurality of rubber links connected by other links open at one side, the opening in the sides of the connecting links being of less dimensions than the rubber links in transverse section, and the end rubber links being provided, one with a hook and the other with a link adapted to be engaged by said hook.
