SUSPENDEES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 16, 1909.
Application filed January 21, 1907. Serial No. 358,331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM FREEMAN, a resident of New York, York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sue penders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in suspenders, the object of the invention being to provide improvements of the character described which connect with the trousers over the hips only and which are capable of wide adjustment to fit any shape of body and be worn with comfort.
A further object is to provide a suspender which can be made in its entirety of inelastic webbing as the suspender requires no elastic webbing to compensate for varying movements of the body and will not bind or drag on the shoulders when the body is bent forward or backward.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is a view on the line .rx of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line y l/ of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating a modification.
1 represents an upright back strap secured at one end around a bar of a triangular metal loop 2 and at its other end passed around a bar of another triangular loop 2, and the end of the strap secured to an adjusting slide 3 on the body of the strap 1 to vary the length of the strap.
Two shoulder straps 4 are secured around the bars of the upper triangular loop 2, and back straps 5 are secured around the bars of the lower triangular loop 2, and join the lower ends of the shoulder straps 4 (as will be hereinafter explained) directly over the hips of the wearer, and are provided at this point of juncture of the shoulder and back straps, with loops 6, preferably of metal, to engage over buttons on the trousers and support the latter. Each loop 6 comprises a wire bent into the desired form, reinforced by a band or collar 7 and secured in a sheet metal clamp 8,
in the county of New in which latter the ends of the shoulder and j back straps are securely clamped after being sewed together where they overlap. The shoulder straps 4 are passed up through loops 9 on adjusting slides 10, thence down through looped portions of loops 6, and thence up through the hinged clamps 1 1 of the slides 10 before passing over the shoulders to the upright back strap, and thus permit the shoulder straps a wide range of adjustment.
The entire webbing forming the shoulder straps 4, back straps 5 and upright back strap 1, may be, and preferably is, made of inelastic material, for by adjusting the slides 10 and 3 the suspender can be made to fit any shape of body and elastic webbing is not necessary to render the suspender comfortable. i
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 5, the upright back strap is made in two sections 12 and 13 respectively secured by stitching to webbing 14 and 15 constituting the shoulder and back straps, and one'of the sections 13 is passed through a loop 16 carried by the other section 12 and secured to an adjusting slide 17 to adjust the length of the upright back strap.
Other changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence, I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of appended claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent is 1. In a suspender, the combination with shoulder straps and back straps joined at their lower ends to the lower ends of the shoulder straps, of an upright back strap connecting the shoulder and back straps, and means for adjusting the length of the upright back strap.
2. In a suspender, the combination of shoulder straps, back straps secured at their lower ends to the lower ends of the shoulder straps, a triangular loop to which the back straps are secured, a triangular loop to which the shoulder straps are secured, attaching means at the juncture of the back and shoulder straps, an upright back strap connecting said triangular loops, and means for adjusting said triangular back strap.
o. A suspender, comprising an inelastic upright back stra), means for adjusting the In testimony whereof, I have signed this same, inelastic sioulder straps connected specification in the presence of tWo sub- 10 with the upper end of1 said 1ficliglit strap, scribing Witnesses.
