Description

ANDREW HOTCHKISS, OF SHARON, CONNECTICUT.
ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,922, dated May 4, 1852.
To all whom it may concern: p A
Be it known that I, ANDREW HoToHKIss, of the town of Sharon, in Litcheld county and State of Connecticut, have Ainvent-ed a new Mode of Constructing a Screw Slide TWrench; and I declare the following to be a full and exact description of my method of constructing the same, and for that purpose reference is had to the accompanying drawing.
Figure l in said drawing represents the stock of said wrench and is composed of an entire piece of iron or steel with a st-ationary jaw or head made on the end of said stock letter A. The stock passes through the handle andis fastened thereto by `means of a nut letter B, screwed on the end of said stock. The y underside of said stock is grooved and threaded in manner of a half nut.
Fig. 2 represents. the sliding jaw and is likewise composed of an entire piece of iron or steel through the eye of which letter C the stock passes. vWithin the eye and on the upper side thereof is a cavity or chamber letter D, into which spring letter E is placed, the spring being kept in place by means of the stock passing through the eye of said jaw. On the lower side of said jaw is a pin or axle letter F on which screw Fig. 3 revolves and is fastened thereon by means of a washer and screw screwed into the end of pin or axle letter G. On the top of said sliding aw is a thumbpiece burred let-ter H. The eye of the sliding j aw is so formed as to tit the stock at the end toward the stationary jaw and iares. or widens through the jaw toward the handle so that the jaw may be moved up and down on the stock as well as along on the same, the sliding jaw is moved in the following manner, to wit press down on the thuinbpiece until the screwlFig. 3 is thrown out of the threads in the half nut' in the stock, then slidethe aw backward or forward to any point on t-he stock. When the pressure is removed the spring rests the screw on said jaw in said half nut. It is also moved by turning the screw when set as aforesaid.
Fig. 3 representsa revolving screw which turns in the half nut on said stock and whichserves as a gage and brace to the sliding jaw on said wrench, the screw is kept in its place by means of spring letter E and the threads of both nut and screw are cut inclined so as to support more strongly the Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is constructing the collar or keys of the inner jaw with an aperture therein of greater section than the bar on which it slides in combination with the spring thereon and the screw thereto attached the whole constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
Dated at Sharon this 13th day of April 1852.
ANDREW HOTCHKISS.
