Description
@Haltet (giunti @gat-nii l www W A. B. C LEMONS, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
Lette/rs Patent No. 88,133, dated March 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-LATCHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
ling's constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
- Figure l, a side view;
Figure 2,3. top view; Figure 3, the latch-bolt detached; and in Figure 4, the hub detached.
f This invention relates to an improvement in knoblatches, the object being to produce a latch so cheap in its'eonstruction that it may be afforded at a much less price than any heretofore constructed; and Y The invention consists in a latch, the cylinder and 'face-plate of whichare cast in one piece, the cylinder being recessed, so as to receive the bolt and hub, the said bolt and hub beingcast each in a separate piece, thus producing a latch of but three pieces, each and all of lwhich are finished and ready to be put together as they come from the foundry.
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings.
Ais the cylinder, B, the face-plate, cast in o ne piece, which is recessed upon one edge, as seen in fig. 2, and in broken lines, fig. 1, and'open at the rear end, so as to form a seat for the hub C, which is of the usual form to receive the knob-spindle.
D is the latch-bolt head, formed in one piece with the spindle E, and with a yoke, F, at its other extremity, to pass over the hub, as seen in g. 2.
A shoulder, a, is formed on the yoke above and below, for the shoulders f, on the hub, to 'strike against.
Around the spindle E a spiral spring is placed, resting against the `shoulder d, in the cylinder, so as to force the latch-bolt forward.
These three parts form thewhole of the latch, with the exception of the spring, and each of the parts is cast-metal, and without the necessity of any work to be performed, to place the parts together, other than that which is done by the process of tumbling To set the parts together, insert the latch-bolt from the rear into its place, having first placed .thereon the spiral or other suitable spring, as seen in iig. 2; then press the latch-bolt back, as denoted in red, iig. l, until the hub can pass through the yoke; then set the hub into the yoke, so as to rest in its seat in the case, as seen in tig. l1, and the spring, when the bolt is freed, will draw the bolt forward and hold the hub in its place, and thus I produce a latch which requires very little labor, and may be produced at a trifle more than the bare cost of casting.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A knob-latch, consisting of the slotted cylinder A, face-plate B, and shoulders d, formed in one and the same piece, combined with the latch-bolt D, spindle E, yoke F, spiral spring, and the hub C, bearing in the concave end of the cylinder, all constructedand arranged as shown anddescribed.
