Description

i anita.'
@nicht I IMPROVED ELEITATING' AND WEIG-HING-APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan of the same.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES EL BRooKMIRE, of St. Louis, inthe county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have 'made certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators and Scales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear descliption thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
."The nature of this invention is in the arrangement ofthe usual form of goods or iieiglit-elevator', or hoisting-apparatus, in such wise that the goods or freight placed upon the platform may be weighed while thereon; and
The nature of this invention is also in the manner of connecting and adapting the parts of the ordinary form of hoisting-platform with the parts of a scale, so as to effect the purpose before stated, all 'of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled herein to make and use my said invention, I will describe the same, referring to `.the accompanying Figure l asa front elevation;
Figure 2 as a transverse sectional elevation; and "Figure 3 as a sectional plan.
I alrange the usual side guide A, which will generally be supported against the floors of a building, and within the said guide I arrange the elevator B, having the platform B connected with the side frame C and upper cross-beamD.
The hoisting-rope E will pass through the crossbeam D, or, attaghingV to the lift-holt F, this bolt will pass through said Beam;
Owing to the arrangement of the scale, in connection with my said elevating-platform, it is advisable to reduce the ,ja-rand concussion, caused by rolling goods on or o the platform B, by using a spring, F', under the bolt F, toconnect the lift-bolt and hoisting-rope with the cross-beam l). Said spring will also serve yas an integral part of the safety-latch formed by the bell-crankl levers G, which. are pivoted at 9,011 the side framevO, and connect with the bolt F.
'The ends of the levers G pass through the frame O, and may engage on the teeth of the racks H, which are secured to the guides A.
If the spring F is released by breakage of the rope' E or bolt F, then its pressure is exerted to cause the ends of the levers G to engage on' the racks H, and
ythus support the platform and its load, as in the ordinary safety-latches.
In order that goods, when placed upon the platform B', maybe weighed while thereon, as in the nature of this invention, I have arranged, within the outer frame B of said platform, the inner-platform plate B2, upon which freight will rest. Said plate Bl is the platform of a scale, of any construction desired, resting upon ports on the exterior frame B.
the usual supports and scale -levers, by which the weight of the freight (and platform) is carried to the lift-bar I. Said lift-bar, I arrange in the 4'side frame G, making the latter hollow for this purpose.
The lift-bar I then connects with the scale-beam K, arranged with weights, k, andfulcrum, and such other parts and connections as are needed to cause the scale-beam and weights la to indicate the weight of freight on the platform-plate B2, the said devices for weighing being constructed in the 'general manner usual in common platform or other scales.
Whenever the operation of weighing is not being performed, the` lever L will be released from the hook I, and the scale-beam K and lift-bar I will then lower, so as to permit the platform B2 to rest on proper suprIhis support of the platform B2 is especially desirable in ,loading and unoading freight. l
The materials of which the parts of my said elevator and scale are made, are the ones usually employed, and the proportions and dimensions of the parts such as any competent mechanics may devise.
I do in nowise limit myself to the special form of attaching the scale-beam K, at the side of theframepiece C, as said attachment may be varied; neither are the forms of the partsl essential to the nature of this invention; but said nature includes all such arrangements and forms as might arise in the Acombination of an elevator-platform, or elevator-frame and a scale.
Moreover, in certain forms of my said invention, a
platform, B B2, would not be necessary. Thus, in a goods-hoist, by a hoistingrope,ordinary steelyards are to be connected with'the hoisting-rope. In this wise, a travelling scale is achieved, the general principle whereof is essentiallyincluded in the nature of this invention.
The said elevator, when resting at each floor of a building or warehouse, serves as a scale for the said door and story, and thus an .economy iu the number of weighingdevicesis achieved, whilst, as to goods being shipped from story to story, a saving of handling is achieved by 'weighing on the elevator-scale.
Having thus fully described my said invention,
What I clai1n,is-
'lhe platform B B2 and side frame O, cross-bar D and lifting rope E, when combined with the scaleworks, and lift-bar I, and scale-beam K, substantially as set forth. 1
In witness of said invention, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of JAS. H. BROOKMIRE.
