FATENTED MAR. a, 1908.
M. N/THOMPSON. SAFETY ENVELOP.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.26, 1907.
MARETON N. THOMPSON, OF ENTERPRISE, ALABAMA.
SAFETY-ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed J anuary 26, 1907. Serial No; 354,326.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, liIARETOjN N. THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Enter rise, in the county of Coffee and State of A abama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety envelops, and one ofthe princi )al objects of the same is to provide an env op of simple construction which cannot be surreptitiously opened.
Another object of the invention is to provide sealing tabs at the sides or ed es of the envelop, designed to be scaled insir e the envelop to prevent opening without detection.
These and other objects maybe attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a face view of the addressed side of an envelo made in accordance with my invention. l ig. 2 is a rear side view of the envelop sealed. Fig. 3 is a rear side elevation of the envelop before the sealing tabs have been inserted and secured in place. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which myenvelop is made.
In carrying out my invention I cut out a paper blank, as shown in Fig. 4,comprising a body portion 1 having side flaps 2 provided with adhesive material 3 upon one edge thereof, said flaps adapted to be bent on the lines 4 to form the envelop inclosure. Parallel slots 5 are formed in the edges of the envelop, sul stantiallfyl in linev with the foldin li-neA A sealing ap 6 provided with a ta '7,\is' gummed, as at 8, and adapted to engage an opening 9 in the lower exterior flap 10 formlng the rear side of the envelop, said flap beingummed around its outer edge as at 11, an. adapted to be' bent upon the dotted line 12. At the sides of the flap 10 are laterally projecting tabs 13 designed to be inserted in the slots 5 at the opposite edges of the envelop, said tabs being gummed upon one side, as at 14, to adhere to the inner, surface of the body portion 1 of the envelop when sealed.
In making up the envelop-from the blank shown in Fi 4, the two side portions 2 are bent inward y upon the dotted line t and secured together by the gummed edge 3. The flap 10 is, then secured upon the outer surface of the side flaps 2 by means of the ginnmed edge 11. When it is desired to seal the envelop the tabs 13 are inserted into the slots 5 after the gummcd tened, and upon s g'h't pressure these'tabs aremade to adhere to theinner surface of the body portion 1. The sealing flap 6 is then bent upon the dotted line 15, and the tab 7 is moistened and inserted in the opening 9 to seal the envelop.
From the foregoing itwill be obvious that an envelop made in accordance with my 1nve'n'tion cannot be opened or tampered with and without easy detection. be manufactured at slight cost, and when sealed forms a. reliable and safe envelop for ordinary use.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is:
portions have been 1nois-- The envelop can The herein described safety envelop comprising a body portion having overlapping side flaps one at each sidethereof, the overlapping portion of one of said flaps being secured to the other, said side flaps and body portion havingyslots formed therein at two."
points longitu nally in the edges thereof on the'line of foldfof said side flaps, a back portion provided with laterally extending tabs and a central aperture, said back portion be ing secured ing gummed andinserted in the slots and secured to. the body portion of the envelop, and asealing flap gummed upon both of its sides provided with a tab to be passed through the aperture in the back portion'of the envelop.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
