Description

interi tant' weee umu f- BEAUMAN BUTLER, OF ST. JOHNSBURY CENTRE, `VERMONT.
Letras Patent N0. 87,141, dated Fama/ry 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEDG-E FOR AXE-HELVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, BEAUMAN BUTLER, of St. Johnsbury Centre, in the county of Caledonia, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement inAxe-Helve Wedges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a suiiiciently full, clear, and exact description thereof toenable those skilled in the art to which my said invention appertains, to manufacture and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a novel construction of metallic wedge, for -securing axes on their helves, its Object being to produce a strong and secure wedge, adapted to be readily Withdrawn from the helve, when desired, Without injury to itself or the eye lof the axe.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved wedge in its preferred form.
The wedge, A, may be made of any suitablel metal, preferably wrought-iron, by any suitable process, and of any desired size and degree of taper.
The edges c t are curved or rounded toward its entering-point, as represented, to yallow it to be turned out ofthe helve without coming in contact with the. sides or ends of' the eye of the axe, and are. notched, as represented at c, near the top or but of the wedge, preferably continuing the cui-vea, and forming tapering lugs or prongs l), for the application of a suitable instrument by which -to withdraw the wedge, their tapering form securingl great strength, and also, in connection with the curved sides, facilitating withdrawal,
and their number providing a double resource, in case either should fail.
It will be seen that by this construction the introduction of the Wedge is also facilitated by the contraction of the entering-point, its eiicacy for spreading the end of the helve is increased by the -wedging action of its edges, and its securityis also increased, as the wood will naturally lill into the recesses c when the wedge is in place.
It will be noticed that my'improvements, although adapted and intended to be used together, do not necessarily depend on each other, and that, therefore, either of them may be omitted without materially affecting the operation of the other. For instance, I proposein some cases dispensing with the lugs b, and
substituting therefor one or more holes near the upper` edge of the wedge.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure Patent- The 1Wedge A, constructed as described, for the purposes set forth.
vTo the above specification of my improvement in Wedges for securing axes on their helves, I have signed my hand, this 7th day of January, 1869.
BEAUMAN BUTLER.
