CORNER-FASTENING FOR BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed September 3. 1907- Serial No. 391.180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Corner Fastenings for Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end elevational view showing my improved fastening in position on a bed post; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of my invention.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in corner fastenings for beds, the object being to construct a fastening which will be cheap and easily applied and one which will cooperate with a reversible side rail holding the said side rail firmly and rigidly in position.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a tubular corner post. 2 is a casting secured on said corner post in any suitable manner, said casting having an extension 3 for the attachment of the connecting angle which ties the two posts together at the head or foot of the bed. It is obvious that instead of having the shelf-like extensions 3 these tying angles can be in the form of rods fastened in any suitable manner to the castings.
4 indicates a socket extension arranged at the lower end of the casting and extending at an angle of ninety degrees with relation to the shelf-like extension 3.
6 isa bail pivotally mounted at the upper end of the'casting 2 and in vertical. alinement with the socketed extension 4. The face of the casting 2 above the socket 4 is preferably formed with a groove 2.
7 indicates the side rail of the bed, preferably in the form of an angle, and 8 is a casting secured to said angle, the front face or end face of said casting being preferably recessed at 8 The casting 8 is provided on its upper end and lower sides with pro jections 9, the rear faces or sides of which are tapered, as shown in Fig. 2, and on the straight or flat faces of said projections 9 are extensions 9 that fit in the groove 2 in the casting 2 on the corner post. In this manner the casting 8 is held against lateral movement. The rear faces of the projections 9 are preferably curved, and in assembling the parts, depending upon whether it is desired that the vertical leg of the side rail angle shall extend upwardly or downwardly, one of the projections 9 is fitted in the socket in the extension 4, after which the bail 6 is folded down over the opposite or upper extension 9. The socket extension 4 provides a solid support for the side rail. The engagement between the extensions 9 and the grooved seat 2 tend to aline the parts and prevent lateral movement, and the bail 6 prevents vertical displacement as well as any tilting or canting action.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which, instead of using the socketed extension 4, I provide a bail 6 similar to the bail 6.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a corner fastening for beds, the combination with a side rail having two like attaching members, a rigid support for coopcrating with one of said members, and a device pivotally connected to said support and side rail to retain said side rail in position;
substantially as described.
3. In a corner fastening for beds, the combination with a reversible side rail having a casting secured to its end, said casting having oppositely extending securing members, a post, a casting on said post, said castin having rigid means for receiving one, of said securing members, and a pivoted bail mounted on said casting for cooperating with the other of said securing members; substantially as described.
4. In a corner fastening for beds, the com- 1 bination with a reversible side rail, a casting l secured to the end of said side rail, said casting having oppositely extending securing members with flat outer faces and curved inner faces, a bed post, a casting on said bed post having a socketed extension for receiving one of thesecuring members on said side rail casting, and a bail pivoted to the casting on said post for cooperating with the other securing member of said side rail casting; substantially as described.
5. The herein described member for corner bed fastenings comprising a casting provided with means for the attachment of a side rail, said casting having oppositely eX- tending securing members provided with flat front faces from which projections eX- tend, the rear faces of said securing members being curved and the portion of the 6. The herein described member for cor-- ner bed fastenings comprising a casting provided with means for attachment to a bed post, said casting having a socketed eXtension at its lower end, a flat face rising above said socketed extension, and a bail pivoted to said casting in vertical alinement with said socketed extension; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereuntoaffiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this twenty eighth day of August 1907.
BENJAMIN H. JONES.
