Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed lan ary 16,1907. e ial 331 352,566-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. LoMAX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to separable buttons, designed more particularly for ready attachment to and detachment from trousers or other male garments.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a button which can be quickly attached to a garment Without the use of a needle and thread or other extraneous means.
This and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a button made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a. central vertical sectional view of the head portion of the button, and showing the separable shoe and shank in elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the detachable shoe and shank. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the spring within the button head. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the key ior detaching the spring from the head of the post or shank.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the top of the button head which is provided Witha central dome 2, which provides a recess within the button head for the pointed end of the post. The back portion of the button head is provided with curved portions 3, and an inwardly extending terminal edge 4 forming an opening for the detachable member of the button. A spring 5 consisting of curved arms 6, and a central, sectional cross bar is seated within the button head. The two members 7 of the cross bar are provided with a slot 8 at a point nearly central to the spring, and at the point where the two members 7 join the ring members 6, a recess 9 is formed to give greater resiliency to the members 7. The outer ends of the members 7 are oppositely beveled, as at 10, and an opening 11 is formed in the outer edge of the button head at a point adjacent to said beveled ends 10. It is to be noted that the terminal ends of the members 6 of the spring are disposed upon. opposite sides of the beveled portions 10 of the bar members 7. The post 12 is secured to a'shoe 13 of ordinary construction, said post having a pointed head 14 and a reduced neck 15. To attach the button to a garment, the pointed head 14 is pushed through the fabric or material, and the button head is inserted over the head'14, and the two parts pushed together until the head 14 is passed through the opening 8 between the resilient members 7 of the bar. When the head 14 is passed through the opening 8, the members 7 spring together and engage the reduced neck portion 15, and thus prevent the Withdrawal of the post from the button head. Whenever it is required to remove the button head from the shank, the key 16 may be utilized by inserting the pointed end 17 in the opening 11 in the button head until the oppositely beveled portions 10 of the bar members 7 are spread apart sufficiently to permit the head 14 to pass through the opening 8.
From the foregoing it Will be obvious that a button made in accordance with my invention may be quickly attached to a garment without the use of extraneous means and that the button may be readily detached by inserting the key. The button can be manufactured at slight cost, and can be made to simulate the ordinary suspender buttons or buttons for other purposes, and may be easily connected or disconnected Whenever required.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is;
A separable button comprising; a button head, provided with a peripheral opening, a spring secured in said button head and comprising curved spring arms, a spring bar composed of two members having oppositely beveled ends, a central slot or recess, and recessed portions at their juncture with the curved portions, a shoe provided with a post, said post having a pointed end and a reduced neck adapted to be engaged by the spring bar members, and a key adapted to be inserted in the opening in the button head for spreading the spring bar members, and releasing the head of the post.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN \V. LOMAX.
