Description
Wweeaeaeew @tibia HENRY GROSS,
OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 86,300, elated Januar/ry 26, 1869.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GROSS, of Tiiin, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined VVatch-Key and Letter-Opener; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, reference being-had to the accompa nying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedY thereon.
The nature of my invention consists inthe construction Q f a device to open letters with, and which may be attached or combined with a watch-key, pencil, penknife, or any other article desired.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in Which- Figure l is a side view, and
Figure 2, the same in section.
A represents a watch-key, the handle of which is slotted, as shown in iig. 2. A
In this slot is pivot-ed a knife-blade, B, the upper part of which is bent over the top of the Watch-key handle, and forms a lever for moving the blade out of the slot.
VUnder the upper bent part of the knife-blade B, is a small spring, O, which is secured in a hole in the top of the Watch-key handle, and serves to keep the knifeblade in the slot mentioned.
To use the instrument, place it between the thumb and second iinger, placing the front inger upon the spring on the top end, throwing the knife-blade out, ready to insert in the envelope.
I do not confine myself to combining the letter-opener to a Watch-key, but may make it separate, or combine it with a pencil, penknife, or any other article desired.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, the Within-described letter-opener, either separate or in combination with some other article, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 8th day of September, 1868.
- HENRY GROSS.
