Be it knownthat I, LEONARDBARTLETT, a citizen-of he United States, residing at New York, Aborough of Brooklyn, in the countyof Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Seal for Bottles, of which the following is a specification. I This invention relates to seals for bottles, and has for its object,`f rst, to provide a sealing cap with a soft or puncturablecenter so constructedgthat n'o leakage can Occur between the locking rim, and the metal closing the center; second, to provide a sealofthe char- .acter described having a lining, orinterior part containing the minimum .amount of material consistent with perfect safety in order tosecure a tight seal; and, third, to provide an interior lining so `constructed that a sealing ring may be used, such as rubber, without liability of having the contents of the bottle come in contact therewith.

and in practice I provide a bottle se'alcomprising an outer ring, or clamping member 7, which. may be composed of tin plate, commonly called. tin, and Aan inner member8, of different material, preferably -c'omposed of non-corrosive metal, as aluminium.
The member 7 is preferably provided with an open center 9, so that'the inner member 8 is exposed at this point, and as the inner memberniay be composed of very thin aluminium, or very thinmetal of any kind, it may bereadily punctured to. gain access, to the con# 4 tents of the bottle in' the absence of a regular opening tool. L The lmember 7, is provided with a skirt which 'may be of any well known form for clamping upon a bottle, but I prefer the stepped skirt shown ina companion application executed by me this day (Serial No. 352,884, filed Jan. 18, 1907i, and may be locked upon a bottle 10, by any suitable clampingmachine. l

yond the gasket 11,`to engage the sides 4of the locking shoulder 12 of the bottle 10, as in this way the edges of the member 8 will be frictionally held by the shoulder l2 in addition to the pressure placed upon vthe same by pressure between the gasket and the member 7 and l the center of the member 8 will be held over the opening lO'as ja' diaphragm, so that all the strength that is required in the member 8 is tensile strength, and'for this reason it may be madegmuch 'thinner than if a cer- ,tain amount of rigidity were required. This not only saves metal, but makes it 'much easier to puncture the member 8 if it is desired'to open the bottle in that way.
' In/order to hold the member 8 in place within the member 7 before b eing placed on the bottle, I prefer to provide a series of inward projections 13, against which the4 edges of the member 8 rest; and where acork ring is used for a gasket, these projections may also sustain 'the gasket in place before being applied The invention is illustrated in' the accompanying lto the bottle, as shown in Fig. 2. :In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4', the
'. member 8', is provided with an annular rib 15, greater in diameter than the opening 9, in the-member 7, and also greater in diameter thanthe throat oi the bottle 16, so that this rib will engage the lip`17, of the bottle. This rib is preferably provided with a verticalouter edge 18, and an inc-lined inner edge 19, and a rubber :gasket 20, is ymounted'around this rib, being held thereon by friction caused by slightly stretching the rubber` in placing the lsame on the rib.. When this seal'is placedupon the bottle, the member 8 being very thin, the rib 15 will crush upon the lip of the bottle at the same time the gasket 20, is forced4 into sealing vcontact with the lip, anni the rib being of non-corrosive metal, prevent the contents of the bottle reaching the rubber gasket so that they will not be contaminated by the rubber.'A At the same time, the edges of the member v8 will engage the shoulder 12, of the bottle, and the entire member will 4be firmly held within the member 7, as previously described .in connection with the cork gasket.
In the 'construction shown in Figs. 5, andA 6, an 'annular rib 15",'and -a second' annular rib 22, are
ormedin the member 8, and the gasket 20, is
mounted iu the groove formed between these ribs, as
l clearly shown inthe drawing. By providing the two ribs the gasket will" be more rmly held in place when i pressed'lupon the lip of a bottle.
The construction is otherwise the same.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a-seal for bottles in which there is no chance for leakage' between the inner and louter members owing to the fact that the inner member extends beyond the gasket to engage the locking shoulder; and by. engagingithe locking shoulder, sufcient friction can be produced on the inner member to 'prevent the same being blown through the openingl in the outer member even i very-thin material is used, therebyl saving'materal required for the formation of the inner member; and making the same more easily puncturable. I alsod save material by extending theinner member only ar enough to engage the locking shoulder without extending the same to the bottom of the sk irt o the outer member. I have also provided simple and eiiicient' means in connection therewith to use va rubber gasket instead of cork without endangering the contents .of the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as n ew and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi the United States, isl 1. A-seal for bottles comprising an outer member having an open center, an inner member closing said center,v and la gasket, one of said members being Aprovided with means to hold said outer and inner member together when detached from a bottle, said .inner member extendingr beyond said gasket to engage the locking shoulder of .a bottle.
2. A seal for bottles comprising an outer' member having an open center, an inner member extending across said center, and a gasket for engaging the lip 'of a bottle, said inner member being extended to engage the locking shoulder of a'bottle beyond said gasket, said outer member having means to hold the inner member in position.
3. Abottle seal comprising an puter, locking member, and an inner member of non-corrosive material, said inner rrenber being provided with a rib adapted to engage the lip of a bottle, and being extended to engage the outer surface of the locking shoulder of a bottle, and a gasket mounted around said rib, for the purpose set forth.
4. A seal for bottles comprising an outer member having an open center, and a clamping skirt, an inner mem ber closing said center composed of non-corrosive material, said inner member being provided with a rib adapted to engage tbe lip of a bottle, and being extended to engage the outer surface of the locking shoulder of a bottle, and a gasket mounted on said rib, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A seal for bottles comprising an outer member of rigid material having an open center, an inner member of different material closing said center, and extending to engage the outer surface of the locking shoulder of a bottle, said inner member having two annular ribs formed v therein adapted to engage the lip of a bottle, and a rubber gasket mounted between said ribs, for the purpose ,set forth.
6. A seal for bottlescomprising an outer member of rigid'material, an inner member, of yielding, non-corio siveA material having two annular ribs formed therein adapted to engage the/lip of a bottle, and a rubber gasket mounted between said ribs, for the purpose set forth.
'7. A seal for bottles comprising an outer member of rigid material having an open center, an inner member of yielding, non-corrosive material closing said center, and extending to engage the outer surface of the locking shoulder of a bottle, said inner member having two annnlar ribs formed therein adapted to engage the lip of :i bottle, and a rubber gasket mounted between said ribs, and held thereinby friction, as and for the purpose set forth.
