NUT-LOCK.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Application tiled February 2,1907. Serial No. 355,428.
To all 11a/1,0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUIS I-I. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of' Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N Lit-Locks; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures ot reference marked thereon, which form a part o'l this speciiication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nut-locks, and consists, es-
sentially, in the provision of a rod having a' series of plates hinged thereon and each apertured to receive a bolt and in the provision of a swinging plate having a recess with ilanged edges adapted to engage the opposite edges of a nut and preventy the same from turning upon the bolt and means for holding recessed plates in engagement with the nuts.
My invention consists in various other details of' construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafterv fully described and then specifically deiined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the application oi my nut-lock to the rails of a railway and {ish-plate. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of' the apertured plates -which is hinged upon a rod, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the recessed plates with flanged edges.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the ends of two railway-rails; B, a fish-plate; C, bolts passing through the web portions of the rails and said fish-plate, and D nuts upon the bo ts.
F designates plates, each of which is apertured to receive a bolt, and each plate is turned into a roll G, hinged upon a rod I-I.
I I designate plates having recesses I formed in the lower swinging edges thereof, 5o and the opposite marginal edges of said re-` cesses are provided with outwardly-extending langes N, designed to engage the opposite edges of the nut. Said recessed plate is hinged to said rod and is movable thereon, as 5 5 `are also the plates F, whereby they may be moved upon the rod to come in proper positions to engage the nuts in the manner shown.
M designates plates which are Similar to the plates F and hinged to said rod, and each 6o is provided with a lug M which is bent at an angle to the plate 'of which it forms an integral part and is apertured, as at T, to receive a rod R, which, passing through the apertures in the two lugs in the end plates IVI, is designed to engage the outer edges of the flanges upon Said plates and prevent the latter from swinging away from the nuts, thereby seeurely holding the plates in locking relation.V
From the foregoing it will-be noted that by the provision of a nut-lock made as shown and described a simple and ethcient means is afforded for eifectually holding the nuts from turning upon the bolts and being simple in construction and easy of application may be adjusted to engage nuts positioned at different locations, the locking-plates being movably held upon said rod.
l. A nut-lock comprising, in combination with the rails and iiSh-plate, bolts passing through the same, nuts upon Said bolts, a Series of apertured plates, a rod upon which the saine -are hinged, bolts'passing through the 85 aperture of each plate, a swinging recessed plate also hinged to said rod, Ilanges upon the marginal edges of the recess in said plate and adapted to engage the edges of the nuts, and a rod engaging the edges of said i'langes 90 and adapted to hold the latter in engagement with said nuts, as set forth.
2. A nut-lock comprising, in combination with the rails and iish-plate, bolts passing through the Same, nuts upon Said bolts, a series of apertured plates, a rod upon which the rsame are hinged, bolts passing through the aperture of each plate, a swinging recessed plate also hinged to said rod, flanges up on the In testimony whereof I hereunto alliX my marginal edges of the recess in szd plate and signature in the presence of' two Witnesses. ada ted to engage the edges of t e nuts, lugs f oarrgfing plates mounted upon said rod, and LUIS H' KENNED' a retaining-rod passing through the apertures /Vtnesses: of said lugs and adapted to engage the outer ROBT. E. BAUGHMAN, edges of said flanges, as set forth. R. C. DIXON.
