BASIN-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basin-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stationary wash stands, basins, wash tubs, and the like, which are connected to pipes through which water is conducted to them, and to which are connected discharge and overflow pipes and devices for carrying off the water from the basin and for relieving and taking care of the overflow, when the faucet or cock is discharging water into such basin.
The fixture and its connections and valves are simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and efficient in use. The device can be connected to basins and wash stands as now used or can be connected to those of any special manufacture.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. Figure l is a view in elevation of a wash stand basin, the fixtures and my connections attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the fixture and its connections, the pipes and valves, the basin being broken away and the pipes broken midway their length for convenience. Fig. 3 a cross section taken at line 3, 3, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a broken away detached view illustrating the construction of the fixture when the overflow pipe is attached directly to the basin and connecting pipe is dispensed with. i
In the drawing A represents the wash basin or bowl of a stationary wash stand and B Y the top or supporting slab. The valve and 4o connections are attached to. this slab B, as is usually the case. Water passes into the basin from the faucet or cock C.
D represents a stand pipe, which passes up through the slab B, carrying at its top a peripheral screw thread which thread extends from the extremity of the pipe down to a point below the slab, the screw thread being marked E. A flange F provided with a raised collar G, both internally screw threaded is screwed onto the stand pipe D until the flange F rests on the slab B, a nut H, screwed up against the under part of the slab B on the stand pipe D firmly holds the fixture and connections to the wash stand. The collar G is provided with a recess or depression J. By this construction the hole in the marble slab B can be made very small, thus saving labor and expense. The stand pipe D has an upper pipe K and a lower pipe L extending laterally therefrom; the pipe K being the overflow pipe and the pipe L the waste pipe. The pipe L is connected to the discharge pipe M connected to the bottom of the basin A. The overflow pipe K is connected to the waste pipe L by the connecting pipe N. The pipe K and pipe N are connected together by a union O and the pipe N connected to pipe L by a T union P.
When used in connection with a wash stand or basin or bath tub in which the overflow passes off through the basin near the top edge (through holes) the pipe K is connected directly to the basin and in this case the pipe N, union O and T union P are dispensed with and pipes K and L connected direct as shown in Fig. 4, so that the waste will flow through pipe L and the overflow directly through pipe K. Pipes L and K open into the stand pipe D.
An elongated barrel or pipe R is made to fit in the stand pipe D and revolve therein. This barrel R has holes or openings S and T, the hole S operating in connection with pipe K 'and the hole T in connection with pipe L. These holes S and T do not lie in the same longitudinal line, but at practicably opposite sides of the barrel R. At its extremity this barrel R is provided with a handle V. The barrel R is slipped into thel stand pipe D the handle V sits in the recess or depression J and a screw threaded cap Wis screwed down onto the stand pipe D till it reaches the collar G, thus making a secure, convenient, and permanent connection. By this construction a slot is left where the handle V can be turned to the right or left.
The device operates as follows, to-wit2-If it is desired to fill the basin A with water the handle V is turned in that direction which will turn barrel R so that the hole T will be away from the pipe L and the hole S will be opposite the pipe K; the faucet C is then turned on and the bowl or basin A will fill with water, and if the faucet is allowed to run and the bowl filled it will not overflow as the pressure of the ever coming water will force out through pipe L and being cut off at the entrance to the barrel R will force up through pipe N and out through overflow pipe K and run off, thus preventing overflow; and if the basin is full and the faucet stopped and it is desired to empty the bowl, the handle V is ICO IIO
turned in an opposite direction so that the hole T will come opposite the mouth of pipe L and the water will pass off through said waste pipe L. The device will act in the same manner in cases where the pipe N is dispensed with and the overflow pipe K is connected directly to the basin except that the overiiow will be direct through said pipe K, instead of passing up through a pipe as N or other connection.` For convenience and as a guide, I place the Words On and Off on the flange, on the waste stand where the handle V operates, so that the operator will know exactly what to do in order to turn on and off the water in basin.
By the use of my device (unless the faucets l'or letting in cold and hot water are entirely too large) I can take care of the over iiow even if both faucets are ruiming.
What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a basin lixture of the character described, a stand pipe, said stand pipe con nected to the Wash stand, a barrel, said barrel adapted to partly turn in said stand pipe, a handle attached to the barrel at its u per extremity, a flange at the extremity ot the stand pipe, a collar on said ange, a cap to secure over said collar, stops on said collar, a slot provided when said cap is screwed in place to allow the handle to move back and forth, said stops limiting the movement of the handle, said barrel provided with holes, lateral connecting pipes between said barrel and wash stand, the holes in the barrel meet ing the mouths of the pipes, as said handle is turned' forward and backward, one of said lateral connections being the overflow pipe and the other the Waste water pipe and connecting parts, all combined and operating as set Jforth.
2. In a basin fixture of the character described, a stand pipe, a barrel, said barrel itting said stand pipe, and adapted to be revolved thereon, holes provided in said barrel, lateral connecting pipes, the holes in the barrel meeting the mouths of said pipes as the Y.
barrel is turned in the stand pipe and connecting parts, in combination with a removable connection extending from the lateral waste pipe to the lateral overflow pipe, as and for the purposes set forth.
