Be it known that I, JOHN E. J onANNEssEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ships anchors and my improvements consist in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby anchors may prove more serviceable in operation.
In the drawing accompanying this application: Figure 1 is a central sectional view of my improved anchor partly in elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the frame portions. Fig. 4 is an end view of the frame. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the manner of pivoting the arms to the slidable rod.
In my improvement I provide an anchor whose winged or engaging portions are pivotally mounted upon a support which is axially movable in a frame, and means are provided enabling said winged portions to be positively spread outwardly to their engaging positions with the axial movement of said support, means being provided to effect such axial movement in the dragging operation of the anchor.
In said 'Iigures, the letters a Z) indicate respectively, two longitudinal portions of a frame, the said portions being united together by bolts c and having a central longitudinal socket or slide-way (Z to receive a rod as c, which is capable of a limited axial movement therein. Connected at the lower end of said rod e, by pivots j, are a pair of winged portions g, which form the engaging members ofthe anchor, and said winged portions are each 'provided with a curved slot, a's Zt, for a purpose to be referred to hereinafter.
The longitudinal portions a b aforesaid are arranged in the form of loops t at their lower ends and are there spaced 'apart from each other, providing, in the assembled frame, a lower bifurcation through which the wing portions g may extend. Pin-bolts, as y', extend across said bifurcate part at opposite sides thereof, respectively in positions to lie within the slots h, whereby said slots may travel upon said pin-bolts in the movement of the winged portions g. The rod c, at its upper end, is provided with lugs 7c having bolt holes, and arms, as Z, are pivotally connected to said lugs by bolts passed through the inner ends of said arms and through said bolt holes.
The arms Zproj ect through openings 'm thereo, the latter entering a pivotal aperture in the upper end of the frame, and being held therein by a washer p and nut g, a slot r in said frame being provided for said washer and nut, thereby eiiecting a swiveled connection, so that the chain may turn freely and avoid becoming kinked.
A curved piece s is inserted in the lower end of the frame between its bifurcate portions 'i i, and carries a ring t for purposes of hauling and handling. Lateral handlinop rings, as u., are also provided, being engage( in lugs o at the opposite sides of the frame.
In the operation of this invention and assuming the wings g to be closed in the position indicated in dotted lines, the arms Z being similarly closed, the anchor, when striking the bottom, and failing to grip by said wings, because lying upon its side, then the arms Z, in the ensuing dragging action, will be drawn outwardly toward their right-angular position with respect to the frame, and in this action will draw the rod c upwardly within the' frame, whereby the wings g, due to the action of pin-bolts j will be extended to their outward position. As the contacting arm Z thus expands, the weight of the anchor will turn it over to bring one of the wings g into engaging position with respect to the surface upon which it is moving, and will thus enable it to acquire a purchase, Hence the eiIect of my improvement vis to automatically insure one of the wings g securing the needful grip to effect an anchorage.
I claim z- K In an anchor, a frame', a rod movable axially therein, engaging @wings pivotally carried by said rod, and arms, arranged transversely of said wings, also carried by said rod; means between said rod and wings causing the latter to expand with the movement of said rod in one direction, and means between said arms and rod causing said movement to be communicated. to said rod by said arms in the dragging action of the anchor.
