LEFT-PUMPE No. 848,857. Specication of Letters Patent.
Application tiled June 7, 1906. Serial No. 320,556.
.Patented april 2, 1&0?.
ti is the lower or foot valve bearing on the .To L7/Z whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. RUHL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented Fcertain new and useful Improvements in Lift-Puna ps and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the same, such as will enable others skilled 'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
'lhis invention relates to pum s, and parficllllarly to that class known as ift-pumps, used for deep-well pumping and the like.
The object of the present invention is tol produce a pump or" improved construction and designed more particularly'for use in deep wells and capable of being readily 4removed for renewal and repairs.'
The device is designed more particularly for that class of pumps having a tubular plunger and external packing adapted to engage the interior of the well-tubing and with an internal valve and with a foot-valve i adapted-to bear upon a seat connected to the lower end of the well-tubing.
The present invention is designed to facilitate the removal of the plunger with its interiial valve and likewise remove the footvvalve at the same time that the plunger is removed.
With lthese and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features ot construction, as hereafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
' ln the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my device as arranged in the well, showing the plunger in its lowest position. E19; 2 is a similar view showing the plunger lnits highest position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, enlarged, of
the valve and plu'nger portions of the iinproved device detached.
1 designates the casing of the well, and 2 is seat `for the foot-valve at the lower end of the casing.
3 is a spring-cage adapted to be placed just above the valve-seat 2 and is provided with cross-pieces 4 and 5.
Q designates the plunger-rod, to the lower end of which is secured-a tube 10, around the lower end of which tube is disposed the plunger-packing 11.
13 is a rodsecured in the cross-piece 5 at the lower end and provided at its upper end with a lateral head 14, said rod extending slidably through an orifice in a cage 12 depending from the lower end of the packing member 11.
15 is the upper or plunger valve, seated on the top of tube 10 and inclosed in a cage 16.
ln using the device the cage 12 slips upl and down onl the rod 13, said rod extending into the tube '10 onthedownward stroke of'the plunger.
Yfhcn it is desired to repair the foot-valve,
er any other part of the mechanism, the
plunger-rod 9v is given quick short jerks, to
release the movableparts andn enable them to be readily withdrawn, theyvall being connected by meansv of the rod 13, with its enlarged head 1 4. bearing on. the cage 12, and
the stem 7, with its cross-pin 8, adapted to bear on the cross-piece 4.
The length of the stroke of the plunger the tube 10. and rod'13.
n pumping oil brass balls may be substituted for the form of valves shown in the drawings.
f Iron pi e, iron tubing, brass tubing, or galvanize -iron pipe can of course be used in conducting the water or oiito the surface of the well. Thus it can be readily seen that I have producedL a pump whereby all the movable parts may be easily removed from the well when it is desired to repair them.
may be regulated by means of the length ofl Having thus described my invention, whatv l claim as. new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. ln a pump, a plunger having an external packing and an internal valve 'and with a depending guiding device, a foot-valve structure consisting of spaced transverse members and connecting vertical members spaced apart and extending above and ,below the transvesjsr members, resilient members conioo nected respectively to sind spaced vertical members :md extending outwardly therefrom, :twelve luwingv :L stem slidnhly engaging one el said transverse members, :nid a rod connected to the other el sind transverse members and slidably engaging' sind guiding' device and with at terminal lateral heed vfor lhearing upon seid guiding device when the plunger is in its elevated pesition.
2. ln a. pump, a foot-valve structure consistingr el" transverse members und spaced apart and connected hy a, plurzilit)Y of spaced vertical members extending above and below the transverse members, resilient mem'hers connected respectively'to said vertical inem- 1 5 said transverse members, and n rod connected i r i to the otheref sind transverse members and adapted to slidablyv engage the plunger of the pump.
ln testimony whereof I infin; r'ny in presence pf two witnesses.
FREDERICK A. RUHL.
